so i picked up what i thought was a dr 225, turns out its a 200er in there...so im in the market for a new motor. question is after readin all the swaps im not sure what to do.

-look for a 225 engine
-look for a timberwolf engine
-look for a moto4 if that fits?

i like the idea of the timberwolf but its only 228 cc, a .50 over piston in the 225 is slightly over 226 cc plus higher compression, probably easier to find. so is the timberwolf really worth the trouble to find? the 200er is a decent little motor but shes slow, way to slow for a 225dr...40-45 mph max lol....id like to put that motor in my 200e, then i can have reverse on that one.

if you can find a good beartracker/timberwolf motor still on std bore you can throw in a ytm225 71mm wiseco piston.thats what i have in my ytm225dx and it has plenty of torque.

sounds interesting ... like to hear from anyone who has done any of the above listed,

I hope you know that the 225 motor isn't that great compared to the 200er motor. Speed wise is pretty much the same they only go about 45-50max but you'll get more torque with the 225 motor. So if you do get it don't expect it to be so much faster because they really arnt, but they are sure fun to play on :) my top speed on my 225dx is 46mph and that's it

I agree with Colton..the 200/225 Yamaha motor isn't a real powerhouse.

If you are getting 40-45 out of it you're doing pretty well.

I redid the top end of my 225DR a couple years back and thought a Wisco high compression piston would help if 'find another gear'..

But after the redo it was still the same 225..maybe picked up 2mph on the top but that's it.

Sometimes slow and steady wins the race partner!

Call the Yamaha your 'gateway' trike..ride it, enjoy it, master it..then maybe a 350X is in your future sometime down the road.

i dunno but my last 200e was alot faster than this.56-57 on gps...and my buddy could pull 60 easy on the 225, the last 2 he had were the same...my big red 250 i had could do 57-58 and thats a hundred pounds more....guess you can see what im getting at haha. not trying to argue this is just all personal experience...and i like the comfort of the 225 frame ,just want to beef up the powerplant a little

Don't know what to say..you're quoting numbers I've never experienced with any of those machines.

Maybe it's that newfie gas you guys burn or you need a new GPS.

My 350x only manages 63mph top end..

I think it’s all in the tires. My YTM200K was clocked a number of times at 54 to 56mph. That was with more than 6 PSI in the tires and me leaning over the bars trying to get the tires to grow (Imagine the outcome if it would have seized in the process of over-revving?)

Buddy had a 225 and it was never able to go as fast as the 200 and I assure you he tried dozens of times on paved roads to pass me. I also recall a few top end runs on a frozen river against a 200SX when they first came out and it was about the same as the 225, maybe even a little slower.

Fast forward to this millennium and my now modified 200 can't seem to get past 45mph. It tries like heck, but the tires they sell now won't grow on the rims like the stock Dunlop’s did back then. Thinking back its a miracle they didn't come off the beads they grew so tall. Back then the tires acted like 5” of smooth rear suspension, now they act as a solid link to my aging spine and have almost no give.

Why's everyone so crazy about how fast these 25 year old trikes go..?

Slow down and enjoy the ride guys!! They're fun at any speed, you and the machine will live longer too!

i want to low end power more than anything i guess, like to be able to hold a gear when the ground gets gooey....hate having to drop to 1st and if im lucky 2nd to keep em spinnin....i dont care for the speed but it would be nice for those pavement runs.if i want speed i have the sportsman,80+ stock :)

has anyone ever tried the moto4? i know some have the center drive but i seem to think one model has the shaft on the left.

I think the 200cc four moto had a left side drive and reverse. I know for a fact the 86 255yfm had a center drive because I owned one and I think they did that to mount a spedo on it.

my buddy had a 99 250 bear tracker with a bent intake valve, he sold me the motor for 25 bucks. turns out the bear tracker and the 225 are practically identical other than the bear tracker has reverse. I took the head off the 225 and threw it on the 250, then put it in my bike. to me it has tons of power, but the 225 had burnt out clutches and needed rings. hauls me around fine and im over 300lbs and about 6'2''

when i get it im gonna tear it down and check everything out, rings, valve seals, valves ,clutches, oil filter , shift changes .want to do all this before i even think about puttin it in the bike.
