View Full Version : Carb stuck open...

So i was riding my 84 250r yesterday, and about 3 hrs into the ride, my carb got stuck in what sounded like wide open. We pulled the top cap and throttle out in the desert, and saw nothing out of the normal, so we towed it all the way back to the trucks. Today i tore the carb apart to find that the little nylon tang inside the carb had broken off, and was allowing the throttle barrel to rotate. Because it was able to rotate it was catching on the idle set screw. After some research, i found that the little nylon tang cant be replaced, and that basically i would have to buy a new carb. This is when i got creative. I found the smallest diameter screw in my garage, cut it to length, then ground the tip down with a dremel tool to basically make a shoulder screw similar to the idle set screw. After that, i drilled out the remaining nylon, threaded it in, and put a big drop of red locktite on it. After i put it all back together, it started right up and runs great now.

I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had the same issue.

havent had this issue personally, but i have replaced more than one carb on friend's bikes that had this same issue. one was the stock 34mm keihin in an 85R and the other was from an 82R. i didnt "fix" it, i just replaced it. a throttle stuck open can be a very dangerous incident and that wasnt worth the risk. theres plenty of carbs out there, snatch one up before your slide gets stuck again.

i plan on picking up a spare carb (or 2) eventually to go with the 3 spare motors i have on the shelf in my garage. i may just have to get one sooner rather than later. right now my budgets kinda tight, so my fix is gonna have to work for now...

ok so im in the market for a new carb... recommendations? currently i have a PE30A, which i assume is a 30mm. If you are going to spend the money, just grab a 38mm airstriker carb or you can run an 86 250R 36mm stock carb (cheap solution and easier to tune with than round slide). Or you can grab a cr500 carb for less than 100$, i just installed one on my buddies 85 250r and it runs great! I Ran a 39pwk on my 84 250R, ran great. If you are looking at new carbs think a little bigger. Very creative way you fixed the last one though!

i would prefer to buy new... if i were to buy an original one from the 80's, who's to say that its not in as bad of condition (or worse) than the one i have. messing with these carbs is new to me, but 38mm sounds a bit big... wouldnt 34 or 36 be a little more reasonable? im not saying youre wrong, jasonb, but can anyone else back this up?

ETA: What makes the flat slide easier to tune than a round slide?

I don't blame you for wanting a new carb as opposed to used since carbs can and do wear out at the slide and slide housing causing airleaks that make jetting a major pain.

BUT, with a reputable seller (like many of the members here) a used carb can be a very good option. Don't rule out a good used carb as an alternative. I scored an excellent used PWK36 from a member here and that carb works perfectly. If buying used, I would probably steer away from sources like ebay generally. Just for the simple fact that there are alot of people on there who basically make a living parting out machines. They may not necessarily catch a worn out carb, and then turn around and sell it as good, used and serviceable.

Most people on here though, they know a good carb from a worn out carb in most cases. And I am confident that about 99.9% of members here would not sell another member a worn out carb.

i just thought about it, if i were to go up in size on my carb, i would need a bigger intake boot (to the engine)... where would i find one? what sizes were used by the different years?? if i bought the 38mm airstriker as recommended, what year intake would i need to find? or do they make generic ones that are universal fit (other than diameter)?

You could always try a heat gun and some oil and see if you can get the OEM intake boot to stretch over the bell of the 38MM. I honestly don't know if you could get the intake boot to stretch 8 MM but I have seen stranger things.

Not too sure about that... Last thing i would want to do is tear it. I may stretch it to a 32 or maybe a 34 but i think the 38 would be pushing it. Not to mention, you want to make sure you maintain a good seal, if it is stretched to the limit, it may slide off partially and allow air in. If the 3rd gen will bolt up to the reed/jug then that would be the better idea, but im not sure if they are interchangeable or what size the neck is on those, other than bigger... Help, please... Someone....

members manbearpig or Kasey should be able to tell you the swappable parts between the two bikes, you could always send them a PM. I am pretty sure the intakes don't swap between the 2nd and 3rd gen 250R's. I read a thread a while ago about someone using an FL350 odessey intake boot to bolt on bigger carbs to the 2nd gen R's.....don't know if its fact or fiction.
