hey guys i have 3 honda us90's all have the ohtsu balloon tires. im here to ask you, because 2 of the tires have leaks and a=slowly leak after a day. the have some dry rot. i know i cant get anymore new just ebay. i would like to know is there anything i can put in them to make them ride able again. i would like to take them to the dunes one day this summer im 16. i know these are hard to find i take very good care of them. i was thinking is there any way to inject some spongy material into these tires? i know you can foam them but they would be 100 pounds. a sponge inside would be great because you can ride on them again and not worry about popping them.:wondering what do you guys think? thanks - caleb

Just my opinion on this, take it for what it is...
I would replace them with modern tires and set those balloon tires aside, they are worth more than the trike in some cases to collectors. If they got dry rot and cracked there is nothing you can do other then watch them fall apart with use. Those cracks will only get worst using them!
You could tube them and get some more use out of them, don't slime or foam them or anything like that you only risk ruining your steel wheels as well. Bottom line i think you should swap them out.

taking those out to the dunes wouldnt be bad at all, i see using them in mud/dirt/rocky areas as being something that would tear them up quick. but ya tubes would be probably your best bet. Other than that, nothing you can really do

I want to know how you guys are saying to use tubes. I have tubed lots of tires in my life but never had to shove the tube threw the valve stem hole. Foam is the only way to go and still be able to ride them. I beleive there is some light weight foam out there now.

You take the air out of the tires, split the rims (unless I am mistaken you should have split rims), put the tube in and get the valve stem through the hole, put a valve stem holder on so the stem doesn't come out, bolt your rim back together, air up the tube and you're done.
New tube for my area is about $8-10.

the tires are vulcanized to the rims you cant remove them

whitetail hunter is correct they cannot be removed off the tiny so called rim if i were you and ride them i would save the tires and buy wheels and tires for a later 74 and on 90/110 and use them. replace the front and rear hubs so you can use them.those tires go for alot of money and are almost impossible to find.

Edit....
I was thinking the wrong tires... If he indeed has the original style one piece balloon tire and wheel combo then yes, he can't tube those..
It must be nappy time my mind is slipping!!!!!!

Yeah you can, i know for a fact you can remove the balloon tires from the wheels because i helped pull a set off about a half year ago.
As Amazon3d said, you can split the wheels as they are two piece units, or you can just pop the bead from one side and with a little baby powder or talcum powder you can powder the tube and the wheel and sneak it around. Get a tube with a TR-6 valve stem, its the threaded bolt in type and will keep the valve stem from pulling down into the wheel.
Just be careful reseating the bead when you pump up the tube, those tires are so old that you wouldnt want to pop one by overinflating. Last set i helped with took about 10-15 lbs to seat the bead and then dropped the pressure back down to normal. The only bad thing about running a tube is if you get a puncture you have to tear it all down again to patch the tube, but in the case of those tires not much else you can do sadly.
Sorry kb, you cannot put a tube in the OHTSU ballon tire. It doesn't come apart at all. Picture a sewing machine bobbin with a tire vulcanized to the outside of it. That's what the rim would be like. I have also toyed with the idea of putting something inside, like an expanding foam to save a tire. FWIW, I only ride balloons in the snow on the lake; Cleaner and not likely to pick pick up a nail.

Yep i just realized that... I edited my post. I seriously need a damn nap now... I was thinking a different tire and wheel combo...
The only bad thing about putting something in them is they would be too dang heavy wouldnt they???

They look like the same balloon tires i always see on these 90's... Let me take another look at that video i didn't see anything special the first time.
Edit..
Ok i see what your getting at, they don't have the brand name on the sidewall... An older aftermarket replacement maybe?

I know these options are out the window but if you were to put foam in them your tires would be completely rigid. Thats your only suspension and it would have no give. Wouldnt be too bad for the dunes but still.
I would just swap them out for later style balloon tires.

Hello actman12
They actually do make a soft 2 part foam but the big problem is getting it inside through the valve stem therefore it's not a viable option due to this.

They are available out there, just search for Carlisle Chevron...

The problem you have is that you will also have to buy new wheels to go with them.

first off thank you for the reply barnett
anyhow the balloon tires do have valve stems so getting it inside through them would not be difficult.
is there a tool that i can put the stuff in that goes around a valve stem to push it in with air pressure or a pump? thanks- atcman12

Pretty sure Firestone made aftermarket tires for these.
Anyway, if you want to "upgrade" to a more modern tire, I have a nice front tire that looks much like the oem setup, except on a rim. Rim bolt pattern matches the US90 pattern so no hub replacements needed.
Let mek now if you are interested in it.

I know this post is old but I believe the front tire on the 90 is a fat cat off the early amphibious 6wheelers
