I just bought a 2001 cr 250 ignition for my atc 500r. which way do I turn the stator to advance the timing a few degrees?

I don't know that engines rotation so I can't give you a direct answer but you can tell easily by kicking it over slowly and looking at the stator..
If it turns clockwise then you move the stator base counter-clockwise to advance.
Plan on having a timing light to set it..just going by guess could wind you advancing too much a burning a hole in your piston.
I would think that (viewing from the flywheel) the engine would turn counter clockwise, so moving the stator clockwise will make the engine fire earlier. make sure that you do it right with a timing light, X2 what doug said

Use a dial indicator to accurately set timing on these engines.
Bring piston to tdc, zero dial gauge, and turn engine opposite of running
Direction. This is referred to in mm. Line up plate with mark on fly. It' s
Impossible to accurately do this by simply guessing. Example 1.8-2.2mm
Can be a huge difference in how engine starts and runs. Easy to do once you
Become familiar with what is actually being done.

Why do you want to do that?

I imagine it's because the piston TDC and how far it moves is dead nuts with a dial indicator rather than just moving the stator this way or that is more accurate.....
