View Full Version : My '85 Tecate Rebuild Resurrection with some cool parts -Does this look right to You?

ok been working on this a bit already but decided to start a thread now. i bought 3 first gen tecates (an '84 & two '85's) throughout the last couple years. they were all very cheap and all had much redneck love and molestation. i paid less then $900 combined for all 3. i figured i could go through them and build a really nice one for myself and part out everything else. some have had some very good stuff on them. and some....not so good. one had the Franks +2 eliptical swing arm, and one had an original durablue +6 axle. so those along with some parts i bought and a lot of sandblasting and powder coating loving i should be able to have a real nice KXT250.

for some reason i did not take pics of these as i received them. probably good i didnt cuz it would have scared small children. i have some pics of them as i piled them into my garage and start taking them apart but the plastics and tanks and some other little stuff were already removed.

you can also c my garage up here where i live progress as i have needed more things rather then the big garage where i keep all my stuff.

so tear down and assessment begins:

i think i do have some. u need front and back?? if i have some they will for sure be "rider" condition. let me know. i have a lot of other parts too, lol

My front is servicable Previous owner cut a hole in front, but rears are toast. Rider condition is what I want. The ones I got on my bike are missing the complete right side.

so here is the frame i am keeping to use. one of the other ones is broken pretty bad then tried to be welded together, and i powder coated and sold the other frame.

this one just has to have the radiator hose loop that goes on the front down tube welded on. other then that it is in amazing shape. no dents, cracks, bends, and even the underside is nearly un touched.

no it was stock just plain aluminum color. r u talking about the very first pic?? i c what u mean it looks like a big bulky plate of aluminum like "another" triple we have seen before. but its just the way the light is hitting it. nothing special there

hey Mike, u have a good amount of experience with tecates right?? i would like to show u a pic and c if u think its right. i pressed my lower steering stem bearing onto the stem and triple. but it appears to not be all the way down. i am really not sure. i cant seem to get it any lower. ill take a pic and post it. if u or anyone else could chime in and let me know if it looks ok that would be awesome.

Lol. No way. Disc brakes all the way. F that old crap!

But u know what's funny. Out of my 3 first gen tecates, 2 have disc up front ('85's) and the other has drum ('84) and the drum is the only one that worked. Lol

I rock a drum on a 500 tecate so all who's not run a drum should quiet down. Unless hard mx will be raced a drum is better than a disc front

I LOVE drums,,being a Honda rider, mine were always spotless clean even after repeated dunkings. Discs are out in the open 24/7,365. Chevy has finally gone away from discs on the rears of the Silverados 07 and up in favor of drums. Love my drums :) For this build I completely understand sticking w the disc :)

Ok great. Thanks man.

So check this out. One of the motors has an exhaust bridge. The other 2 don't. I'm assuming maybe it's a KX cylinder. Also has a ton of port work done. Not really sure if it's any good. But sure is a lot dug out. I thought the exhaust side was supposed to be highly polished for a turbulence free exhaust exit.

Ok carry on u old men. Ill keep up with my build

So here is one of the rear shocks that was in one of my tecates. Anyone know what it is or anything about it? I mean it may not even go to a Tecate. The spring seems to be very short. The preload is cranked way down and the spring is still loose. So maybe it's not a Tecate shock and they had to keep trying to adjust it just to get it to hold the trike somewhere rideable.

What do u think?

I can answer that if you need me too,but it comes down to pissing you off enough to get you to jump in that old truck of yours to come down to kick my ass! Then since you are making the trip, bring me one CT 70 (Gold color) a SX 250 so I can build a 4 valve 390cc motor, and last but not least I need a 86 250r roller with short track tank set up for the crf250 motor. Judging by that shiny piston and the absence of crud on those porting craters I’m willing to bet that engine was never run after it was last put together. You may have a diamond in the rough there if the guy did the bottom end too. BTW rough intake ports (but not that rough) are considered by many to be OK for keeping fuel from pooling up, or forming balls, but the exhaust should always be polished (especially on a 2 stroke) to keep carbon from building up.

Without going down and comparing Ryan, you def have a Honda rear shock there. With measurements we could tell you for sure, but probably a 85 R by the looks. I would have to compare exit of the hose etc to be sure. But def a Honda shock. Mick, nobody said anything about a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro kicking,, Tackle lol. I will donate a 87 ! Sx for a 4 valve 390, DONE DEAL :) And if I ever get off this thing I have to go check for colors for ya :) And I don't have a OLD truck,,till you die :D:lol::lol:

And with the exhaust bridge that confirms it is a KX cylinder correct?

Ok good to know. Again all 3 tecates have different shocks so I could compare them and say ok these r the same so must be stock. I just saw how short the spring was and thought it might be something else. And I don't have my two '86's in the same garage to compare. But I will try to measure it tonight.

TatTooL23
07-19-2013, 01:12 AM
Ok since I don't have the measurements of that shock yet cuz I worked way too late.... Here is some other big time eye candy!

The franks elliptical tube +2 swing arm. Was in really good shape other then they spray painted over the original blue and then put oem decals on it. But I returned it to all its glory. Sand blasted it, powder coated it, and out new repro decals on it then pressed in new pivot bearings and seals. I love it.

The swing arm looks great! The shock will measure around 14 3/8 (if I remember right) measuring the shock body is what will tell what year it is. The spring is not correct and will be useless with the extended swinger. Your gonna want to use an 86 spring or buy a new spring all together.

does this look right to you??

this is the steering neck, the bottom triple tree and thats the seal. is that supposed to up inside the frame neck more? i had some issue pressing the steering stem bearing but thought it went down as far as it could go. just wanted to ask if anyone knows if that seal should be up inside the lip of the frame. or if the gap there is too big and the bearing needs to go farther down on the stem.

let me know. thanks.

I really don't want to do the blue because then it blends in with the swing arm and doesn't come off as two pieces. But this may be what looks best who knows. I hav a few of the carriers I suppose I could do them each a different color and c how it looks. Lol

I also agree with the blue,I retract my green. I think it might look a little gawdy that way.

I'd do green. Gotta have the contrast.

I would do black to match the tripples, pegs, and swinger peripheral hardware.

Can a T3 carrier be polished or is it steel? There is a chrome powder coat that can be used on steel as well.

Isn't there supposed to be some kind of chain slider on the swing arm at the pivot ?

Yes it does need one. I mean I still have to put the swingarm bolt through the motor too so ill have that slid back out anyway.

And I don't remember if I have a slider in my totes of parts. So I'm holding off on buying one until I go through my stock pile. I have bought parts I already have way too many times at this point. Lol

Do u make them John??

I admit I did not look at all your pictures Tat so this morning I was looking at some more and see in post #50 of yours you do indeed have one (that looks to be in pretty darn good shape).
I was assuming your Franks swing arm used a different style of chain slider but I see Mr. Franks incorporated the stock design into his product.
I don't think you will need one from your pictures but in case you do, yes we make + have some on hand.

NICE build ! john
