So I finally sold the sleds today.
And now I'm shopping for a nice 400ex or earlier 450r for the Mrs. Any of you guys in NY let me know if you have any leads. I'm going to look at what looks and sounds like a nice '05 450r saturday evening.

Well, I certainly didn't get what they could potentially bring closer to winter... But I put 3g in my pocket today for the hunt....
BTW, I will be making a donation here shortly! Not trying to toot any horn, but dont want people to think I'm the kind of d-bag that would pocket a bit of money and ignore a good cause like that! :)

Lol,, I just made a deal today for 2 MINT Cats. One F6 EFI with ALL the right goodies, and 03 Sno Pro 440 Sno X racer, again with ALL the goodies. I am out of my mind I know, but I love sleds.. Sure hope I can sell them this fall... I traded a as new 06 KTM 250SXF,with a fresh engine for them..
I agree, if its for the wife, look for a 06 or newer. I had an 05 and I hated starting that thing, plus it was the biggest cold blooded prick I have ever owned. I'll kick a two stoke all day long, but have to e-start for the four pokes.

Well guys, I didn't end up with a 450r. Instead I found a solid 400ex. It was recently overhauled by a reputable shop in my area.
Aside from some thin surface rust on the frame in places this EX is solid! :) No funny engine noises, no shakes, wobbles, or shimmies. I believe I got a good one.
Little brother picked up a real descent 86 200x from Mike M today too. But he is a member here and can post his pics himself!! LOL! I'm trying to get him more active here for all of the wealth of knowledge available. He already has a nice '86 350x (also bought indirectly from Mike M) and he's thrilled to have the matched pair.

Well, truth be told, I was kind of on the hunt for an EX from the very beginning. I know the 450's are more high strung and don't have the service life of the older style thumpers like the 400ex or it's sister the 350x. I was looking for long term reliability and I think I got just that.
It's bad enough it seems buying used sport quads in general as that type of machine tends to be owned by younger people who often tend to beat them pretty good. I think that's even more true of the average 7 or 8 year old 450.
I wanted to get back to adjustable rockers, and single cam. I had a couple z400's recently, and while they are nice machines to ride performance wise, I have grown to really dislike the twin cam, no rocker design.. Twin cams seem to eat through cam chains quicker and when the chain starts to get stretched to the limit, they tend to jump timing much easier than a single cam. Makes sense since the chain is going in a triangle path and only wrapping about 1/3 of each cam gear, whereas the single cam is getting a full half wrap on the gear....
And yes, I think it's going to get a set of ODI locking grips when those get worn. I have them on both of my R's and absolutely LOVE them! http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/43/-/218/948/-/-/896060/Odi-ATV-Lock-On-Grips-Rogue-Black-Silver-120mm-%284.7%22%29-Length
I know I'm babbling on now... Just giving a little background. :)
Bottom line: Real happy to bring a nice EX home! :)

Nice pick up! I had an 07 400ex for a while and they are really good quads to be such old technology. I bought it from a friend that got it brand new in 08,he had just gotten past the break in period when he got bored and parked it in his shop. It sat until 2011 when I bought it, I sold it in 2012 to move north and the girl that bought it sunk it in a mud hole ruining the top end. It's pretty much trash now and makes me regret selling it to her.

Check your tie-rod-ends & the lower steering stem bushing / bearing for wear .
Congrats on the new bike & sorry to hear about the sleds .
