View Full Version : Interesting Trikes From the Past...
When I scanned in the pic of the blue tires in a different post, I decided to flip through this Dirt Wheels from june 89.
I came across this pic in there from an article entitled "Great Moments in ATVing". As the caption says, this is a beach race in Holland. Follow my poorly drawn arrows and you'll see 3 interesting trikes. First is two similar LC R's. Both with white tanks? Perhaps these are what the models sold in Holland looked like??? Or are they just aftermarket tanks??? and the third one is something very weird! I have no clue unless it's a Husqvarna or some other European MX bike conversion.
Thought ya'll might enjoy!
Merry Christmas! :D

the number 59 is a 250R.. you can see that on his seat. The bottom one also looks like an R because of the way the front fender is. The top one I cant make it out..
There's no doubt in my mind that # 59 and the two trikes coming down below it are 250Rs.
The white trike I point to right above is NO 250R! :D look at the leading-link front suspension! it's like an old KLT front end or something.
I think the strange HRC trike with white shrouds you are thinking of was a works HRC 200R, Per haps this one???????

I think I've seen a better pic of that white trike on this site somewhere. That is so weird how the 200r's have the sprocket and looks like disk in the middle of the swing arm, I wonder how the bearing carrier worked? Jeb: got any more pics of 200r's, Tigers, Cagivas? Also, whats the orange thing infront of the riders leg on the 200r?

Last year when I was in Idaho, there was a guy with a full custom quad. The swingarm was a big loop, the brake and sprocket were in the middle, and there was a bearing on either side. I wish I had took a pic.

Those white tanks look like clear plastic tanks with extra capacity for racing. That one trike with the crazy front end set up I would like to find some info aobut.

what is that pink line going from behind the guys foot, to somewhere by the handlebars? Is the radiator on the tripple trees? Or is it something else?

It's a steering damper.

That thing must have been pretty high tech back then, especially the weird swingarm design.

200R is a 2 stroke right? cuz in the local paper there was a 1985 Honda 200 Racing Trike for sale, i didnt call about it cuz it was about 800 bucks, now thinkin i should call about it and ask if its a 2 stroke, if so, might convince the parents to get it...... twisted twisted twisted

I dont think that it is a 200r, no reason why just a gut feeling. But look at what ive circled what is that? The finders dont bend like other trikes ive seen. And look at the one and only quad in the pic.

the one with the leading link front end, maybe isn`t a trike, the caption says that there are side hacks, doesn`t that mean bike and chair or sidecar, in europe most bike and sidecar combos have leading link front suspension.
just a thought??

Don't qoute me on this, but i think the one that has wierd front end might be ktm. i have an old 3wheeling magazine that shows one with a front end just like the one in this picture. I'm not sure about it though. I think ktm was trying to get into the 3wheeler market. I'll have to look it up and get the picture scanned.

hey, i think the trike with the big circle, off to the right is a tri-z. i checked some other pics, and im gonna say tri-z on that one. going by the front fender, plus the rear fenders. on the rears, it looks like it says either KTM or TRI-Z. well thats my thought on it. peace, tony. P.S. i think there is some dirtbikes behind the quad in the top left.

the white one above the 250r's the exhaust pipe comes out on the wrong side. so it definitly is not a honda.

The trike with the leading link front suspension is a Phillips KTM. These guys are europeans and as someone hinted prior, these guys were originally from the sidecar scene where this type of front suspension is common. They always used KTM motors and were around alot (In europe)and even built quads for a while.
I guess I will have to dig out my magazines and compete with you Jeb..!!

I added some more details circled more dirtbikes, white front fender??ANd found the tri Z and some other things.
The number #73 trike circled looks to me like a TRI-Z. Look at the radiator shrouds and the way the pipe snakes around to the left on the machine. Granted, the fenders look strange, but I would have to say that #73 is a Z. The strange front end trike does look like it has roots in the european sidehack ranks. All the other trikes look like liquid R's to me. Great post and thanks for bringing a little history back again. Thanks.
This has been a great post! Glad all enjoyed it.
The boats in the background are definitely floating.... it's a beach race.
