Well time for another project.:D
I've always wanted a 250 big red so the price was right on this "project". I paid $130 for this one and the motor and drive train work great, but extremely rough around the edges. It's a 1985 250 es. So, I figure it will take around 6-9 months for this one. I plan on possibly another camo one with the 2 inch lift like someone else did here:naughty:

Hey thanks a lot guys. I appreciate it. I think this will be no worse than my last rebuild, which was a 185s. The pics are here some where on this site. I will have to search

X2, save it! It will more than likely cost more to build it, than it would to just buy a turn key clean runner, but what fun would that be? :D
Btw, nice job on the 185!

I agree with Larry on the 'no camo'. Keep it Red! Ha ha. Oh well, it will be a great restore nonetheless, especially looking at the sweet job you did on that 185!

Thank you guys. I actually am leaning to the "original red" but who knows what will happen? I will be doing the 2" lift though

Can anyone tell me why the side panels are soooo expensive. I've been watchin ebay and have yet to see ONE side less than $100. Am I missin something here? Are they made of gold?

Because they are always the first thing to get taken off and lost and there are no replacments made.

So $200 for the pair is reasonable?

No, it is way to much money for what they are but that seems to be the going rate. The kicker one is the one that is so hard to find. I have never seen the kicker side under $100 the lefts a little less. You run across the lefts more often. The big red I just bought came with N.O.S rear fenders and both side covers all new, but I need them.

Maier makes these as does Jswinehart on here. I think he only makes the kicker side so far? So,there is hope.

So today I started working on my big red. When I bought it the guy squirted some starter fluid in it and it popped over and sounded good. Well today I ripped the carb out to rebuild it and then changed the oil filter and that's when I got a bit disappointed . As I pulled the oil filter I noticed at least a half thimble of fine metal shavings. OUCH!!!. As soon as I am finished with the carb rebuild, (waiting for kit) I will take it for an actual test drive for the hell of it but I do believe an engine rebuild is in my near future. I am thinking probably over the winter time as money is a little tight now. So I will have to do some searching on the forum and web and see what this is gonna cost me:crazy:

I figured I would also keep a list of my exact expenses as I build this project no matter how small to give others an Idea of how much this is costing.
Project Big Red................$130 Craigslist
Carb rebuild kit................$18 Ebay
Oil Filter.........................$7 O'reily auto parts
Exhaust system...............$75 Ebay
Tail Light set..................$20 Ebay

Exhaust system came yesterday from ebay and I was mildly surprised. It was in really nice shape with no dents or holes at all!. So hopefully within the next few days I will be disassembling, sand blasting and then powder coating. I have High temp black powder for it and then red powder for guard or maybe polish chrome. Not sure yet how my red powder will match the big red end color

From my own experience, if you remove the starter reduction cover I expect you'll find a whole mess of broken teeth and other sundry parts. This would likely be caused by the sprag clutch.
I'm being somewhat hypocritical as my Br has the same problem and I haven't had the balls to start stripping it yet!

No back story really. The guy I bought it from just said he had it for friends to drive while he had a 4 wheeler to go mudding in farm fields. He got rid of it because his friends couldnt keep up with his atv anymore

Well a few updates. The big red project has been on the back burner for awhile. Been working a lot of hours out of town, but I have still been buying. I just picked up a frame off of ebay for $80 with shipping. Wow!! Can't believe that one!
I thought it would be a bit easier transferring parts from one frame to another as I rebuild the bike instead of everything laying in the garage wondering what went where. I will update my parts pics and money invested so far. I still am taking plenty of pics though and will continue to do so. I do believe I will be ripping the motor apart and getting the 300 big bore kit for it. Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated as usuall. Also, will rear fenders from an 86 fit my 85?

Well I'm back, and the project is getting resurrected. Lately I have been putting the parts on the ol girl and see how the fit is. Its coming along nicely. Once I have it all up and running with all the parts I will enjoy it till the winter and rip it all down and begin the sand blasting and powder coating and such. So here is our update.....

That Suzuki is a great farm quad. Not a sport machine, but I think it was one of the earliest mass produced quads with full independent suspension. They ride really smooth but without a anti-sway bar they have a lot of chasis roll while cornering. Lots of cables to keep lubed too.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated it. I will just be doing trail riding and mudding with it. Do not do any type of racing
