I think this is normal, but I want to be sure. My 350x has a ticking noise coming from the head. Not too loud. It is very rythmic and increases with RPMs. At first I though cam chain, then I realized it is too perfect a sound. Then I though valves, but checked 'em and they were within specs. Any help?
Thanks,
Kris

it relly sounds like your cam chain they dont come lose they usual stretch after alot while in a bike with alot of power to them thats why a cam chain thicks cause its stretched and that why they are replaced. but i could be wrong have you even put a new one in

Could be trailprotrailpro cam chain, but its probably a Valve sticking.

Hmm.....the sound is too perfect for the cam chain I think. Would sticking valves cause any other problems?
thanks

Valve lifters are probably worn down and there is a gap between the end of the valve and the hardend contact pad on the lifter

Have you adjusted your compression release lately? The normal thing is that the cable stretches with age, so the release does not work. If you get it a little too tight, the release can hit on the valve as the motor is running.

I am not sure if its normal....My 350xs do it when they first warm up a little bit. I think its the timing chain. I am going to fix them this winter becuase it just started happening when I ran premium in them. Use super it may cost more but you pay for waht you get!

I put up this same post just befor my rebuild. I was told it was nothing to worry about. I put in a new cam chain with the topend rebuild. Kicked it over for the first run and it still ticked. I ran it for the summer then the last time I took it out something let loose. When kicked over it makes a nasty noise like a broke cam chain................... So I loaded the SKS and shot the FOCKER..........

Just the noise of a 15-20 year old machine! My bigred does it too.
