I'm putting my newly sleeved kx cylinder on my tecate, and I'm going to buy a new piston, should I go with oem, or wiseco?? The price is some what similar, but is there a big difference in quality from one to the other?? Advantages or dis-advantages of either? I've used wiseco on 4 strokes, but never with a 2 stroke..

Thanks,

Sean

Ok I'm not speaking from experience just what I've read, and that a Wiseco pro-lite give you better torque because it's so light. Wiseco is supposed to be the piston for 2-strokes.

I am using pro-x piston kits this year. i have been having trouble with wiseco wearing out too quickly. It may just be the way i ride but i've had to rebuild every year the last 3 years of riding my 250r's. It also could be the way that i mix my oil and fuel. i know some people that use pro-x that mix the oil and fuel the way i do and ride they way i do but they haven't reuilt theirs in 3 years so i am assuming that it's the wiseco but thats just my .02. I could be wrong but those are just my thoughts. If you want it to last a long time, i'd go with oem.

OEM whenever possible in my opinion

Wiseco if you want performance......Pro-x is THE worst kind of piston....if you want hot seizing, burning up, engines, then get pro-x. if you want broken piston skirts and crumbling pistons, get pro-x

I guess i'll find out soon about the pro-x and i'll let you know.

Why use an OEM piston when you can get more torque and compression from an aftermarket piston.

As for reliability, a new piston shouldn't hurt. They way you maintain and ride your bike is where your reliability comes from mainly.

do they sell pro lites pistons for the TRI-Z 250s ??

Yep, I have a pro lite in my tri-z, I like wiseco, they seem to be quality pistons.

did you notice any type of a performance increase by using the pro lite in your tri Z ?

I never really have ever seen the sense of going back to a stock piston when doing a rebuild. I've always used Wiseco's pistons and I have never had one fail in nearly 20 years of rebuilds. Any top end wear I've encountered after fitting a Wiseco has come at normal intervals. Tim Sr. is really the one to ask about Wisecos and rebuild frequency, I think hes on his last overbore on his Tri-Z (.80) and I believe he uses Wisecos. Using a Wiseco raises a pingers horsepower both by upping the compression ratio and through modified piston port timing - Allthough you really need to match port the Jug to take full advantage of any 2 stroke rebuild that involves a bore out. This is because you change the ports timing angle as you bore away the liner to the next size. If you don't "re-time" or angle the ports to match the new bore, you will actually end up losing horsepower even though you gained displacement. AAEN performance claims that by just simply installing a Wiseco into the Polaris 400L (Scrambler) motor, you will gain a good 5hp!.

Wickedfinger is right on the money on this one!!! I totally agree.

yes he did, very good point wickedfinger, tottaly agree with all of it............

but i just had to say..., pro-x, and all those other cheezy companies that make pistons....there prices are cheaper then wiseco....they are cheaper for a REASON

i recomend any one to buy wiseco pistons they are decently priced and do make a power diff. oem is not bad as they do use them from the factory and last pretty long. but wiseco is a great piston to run pump gas on and you mix your fuel right. b/c if you dont wiseco pistons do make a mess when they blow. i know b/c i leaned a machine out way to much and it went .but after i rebuilt it and mixed it properly it still is running...
but i do recomend wiseco pro lites over anything.good luck with you rebuild. :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P
