ok , I got a lead on a 250r that's been sitting for 10 years. said he landed on his back and hurt it (his back)pretty good and hasn't been on it since. said it ran when he parked it. he said come look and make him an offer. so im going to try to make his way this weekend. he said the plastic was rough when he got it and they still are( im sure they are rougher now)
whats your opinions on a fair price???
if I do get it , change all fluids , clean carb , put in new plug and try to start??? or is there something else I should do first??
thanks for any advice

Impossible for us to answer...very sketchy info!!
Air or liquid cooled? Mechanical state??? How was it treated and cared for in the 1st 15ish years of it's life??
A pretty broad range for a 250r..could be $200 worth of machine, maybe $800-900..
As little as possible is the only right answer, then perhaps be ready to empty your wallet to make it right again!
I agree. You'll want to replace crank seals, may need to do one helluva coolant system cleaning, hope the water pump seal didnt decide to crap out while sitting, has it been turned over while sitting or has it sat untouched, you can guarantee that the oil is off of the sleeve and theres bound to be some surface rust. lots of lots of variables

OK, SO ID DIDNT KNOW THERE WAS A LIQUID COOLED R I GUESS ( I haven't had an r before ).... im new here sorry. thanks for all the info so far, definitely stuff to look for and I appreciate it. I don't want to overpay for a pos. as little as possible is the plan for sure,
what is the big price difference ( you say a 200 or a 8-900 machine ) is that the air vs water cooled??
sorry for the sketchy info , that's all I know , for know, mainly looking for stuff to look out for. he did say he paid 1100 for it 12years ago. and that it ran great when it was parked.

Whatever it is, Check for mousenests in the pipe. It got me and my dad when we rebuilt our 86 that was sitting for 6 years. Sucked it right in the jug and siezed it up, had to pull the head off to free it up. Never gonna make that mistake again.

If it is liquid cooled here in the west I wild never pay more than $1200 for an ATC! Now plastic is everything; anything on bike can be fixed but you cant fix plastic. When you go look at ATC look at it like it does not have plastic on it are tires good, does motor have compression, does it have a ton of hours? Then look at plastic separate is it in good condition? Or is plastic beat to hell, your call but those are a few pointers.
One more thing if it is an 86 ATC 250R the value goes another few hundred bucks not many of those produced and sold and remaining ones that were left at dealers were cut up! Here out west 1985 ATC 250R's are really common but 1986 ATC 250R's do not pop up very often! good luck
what is the big price difference ( you say a 200 or a 8-900 machine ) is that the air vs water cooled??
Air foolers are generally cheaper, but not by that much. they are all great machines. The price can differ based on the overall condition of everything, i think mainly the engine. but other things, like rust, fender condition can change the price. possible aftermarkets raise it too. aftermarket pipes are common, and some are more rare than others. Very rare parts raise the price a lot. Sounds sketchy, just dont go home with a POC that you paid a million for

Yes 84 and earlier are air cooled, 85-86 are liquid cooled.
Air cooled were typically a cheaper machine to buy now..the liquid cooled more sought after but a money pit if in rough shape.
Water pump and engine side covers(sprocket side) are near impossible to find on the 85-86.
Best to gather some 411 first and even a recon for some pics..we might be able to help more.

I don't believe in the "ran good when it was parked" thing...as far as that being to the seller's advantage. It's to YOUR advantage on negotiating a better price if it is indeed NOT running. You have to do all the work to get it running, and take the risks of what might be wrong with it when you GET it running. Make sure you mention that to the seller.

If its not running assume its a parts bike and don't overpay.

Went to see it today...tires are shot, back plastic is stitched up. All looks to be there. Says its an 86. We talked price a little., he said he would like 300 ...cash or trade for something. If i cant find something to trade quick im gonna offer 2.... Maybe settle for 250.. My phone wont post pics on forum for some reason

If it's a 86 you can't get hurt at that price. Granted, there are some real HEAPS out there! But if it has compression, you're fine.

Considering a very nice (but not mint) 85 ATC 250R just went for $6450 on ebay, I think $300 for an entire machine is a damn good price. Hell, a straight frame is worth that.
If you decide you don't want it, I might!

Everything is there. That is such a great score.
When I hear $300 86 250r, I think of bikes that have been sitting for 10 years outside, all rusty, missing parts, plastics gone, carb pulled off letting water get in the motor, wroached as it gets.
You got a very nice score. It will need things, sure... But its all there.

Someone drilled a bunch of holes in lid of airbox. Opened it up mud dobbers and a ton of bugs in it.. Nothing in tube between carb and filter though. Marvel mystery oil in spark plug hole had set a while, , put in a little gas in sparkplug hole and started kicking. About 10 kicks and she ran for 7-10 seconds. Lots of white smoke. Ran out if time, ill get back to it as soon as i can.

Clean and oil (service) the air filter, drain and replace transmission oil with new, pull the carb off and give it a thorough cleaning, drain and replace the fuel with new premium fuel and a good quality two stroke oil, fresh spark plug and I would also flush out the cooling system. Do this and then your good to go with a start up, let it idle for a bit and look for leaks, listen for nasty noises. when it's warm do a compression test to get a sense of the state of the engine, 160 or up and I'd say your good to go, less and it will most likely need the top end looked at.
You have a gem in the rough there, probably some internal go fast goodies. Post up some nice daylight pics.

Wow, That thing just SAT. Good deal for you bud!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't want that pipe,,, PSI is junk... (Y'ALL SHUT UP. I NEED ANOTHER PIPE) LOL No man seriously
WICKED SWEET SCORE!!!!!!!
Just a precaution but I would pull the stator cover and rock the flywheel up and down just to see how the crank bearings feel as well as nudge it back and forth to see how the con rod bearing feels.
PSI really knows their stuff!! My 87 LT250R (265) is a retired ice bike out of Michigan (= ported to hell and back) and the PSI pipe on it pulls like CRAZY.
Sweet score for SURE!!!!
Look all over the jug for any shapes/numbers/letter scratched/etched/punched into it

Very lucky pal. Hell of a find indeed! Also, I'm assuming the R has a "dry" stator (not wet bath on it) I've never had a liquid cooled one apart. Double check to make sure that flywheel is rusted to hell, or that there water in it. Seen that on a 1st gen R.

The one I got had sat over a decade. I doubt you will find any wear from sitting. Crank seals are a good investment and per the shop manual I believe the LH side gets sunk 5MM into the bore to pass the crank taper........................

Yea I know there won't be any bearing wear from sitting... But gotta think why it got put away in the first place. My LT250R sat for 13 years because of a wore out top end and bad rear end bearings. Checking things like that are just a precaution that's nice to do. It may seem 'over kill' or something like that,, but ya never know ya know?

Not too shabby, man. And yes, smokers have a nasty sounding exhaust note. But, damn, does it make your skin crawl ;) That PSI pipe has helped that a fair deal, I'm sure.

that exhaust has a very nice growl to it, rather than the 'ping' of the modern FMF stuff. repack that silencer and it should tone down the 'pop'
Thanks for the offer but i dont have a rim that woukd work
Arite it's no problem man. Maybe I'll find someone to lift them from me lol
Just saying but it sounds lean. Has a lean rack to it. Maybe it's just the can needing repacked but IMO it's rapping out too long = lean
If I didn't feel like I was thread jacking if post the link to my LT with a PSI pipe. It's always sounded different than all the other LT250R's as well.

Just thinking,,, if you didn't have an air filter in/on it then it would lean it out some and possibly cause it to rapp out like that. I'm trying to find a video of a bike leaning out that has the sound I'm talking about but this is the only one I can find. Yes I know it's a completely different bike, pipe and carb but a lean 2-stroke sounds the same lol this is my buddy and his bike.
