Hello All, Im new to the forum, and also new to 3 wheelers. I was looking for a bigger engine to put on my homemade go kart, so i was asking around at work and a guy said he had an old 1982 Honda 185S thats been sitting in his barn for 10+ years. So i bought it for $40. Im looking at this thing when i got it home, and im thinking, this thing could be alot of fun. So instead of taking the engine out, I decided to try and restore it. With limited funds, i slowly started replacing broken and worn out parts. Carb, bearings, seals, fuel tank (rusted out),brake cables, ignition coil, i rebuilt the recoil starter from parts i found on ebay, new tires etc..I finally was ready to start it up, and it fired on the second pull. It runs really well , runs smooth, idles nice, shifts smooth, clutches seem to be in decent shape. sounds almost too good to be true. Well, it was. Now to the problem thats driving me crazy. The engine runs perfect until it gets hot. Then it dies and wont restart until its cool. Then it fires right up again, runs till it gets hot and dies again. It is losing the spark when it gets hot.It is NOT a fuel issue. I removed the flywheel and stator and cleaned it all up and checked stator coil with ohm meter. It checks out okay (i think) 199ohms cold and 250ohms hot. I believe the book says 245 normal ohms. The pulse generator also checks out okay.. I even checked out the engine kill switch looking for a short or something and everything looks okay. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. ....Jeff

First thing I would do is change the spark plug.

In the old days we had a couple 185s that used to do much the same thing. I used to keep a spare spark plug. Change out the plug and it would crank and run for a while again... Meanwhile I'd clean the plug I took out, and put it in my tool kit, and repeat the process when it happened again.

For whatever reason, cleaning the plug and putting it back in didn't work; I had to put in my spare cleaned one. Maybe because it was warm? I don't know, but that's what used to work for us.

Sounds like a CDI issue..

Isnt the pulse generator and the CDi kinda the same thing? I mean i checked out the ohms on the little magnet/transistor that has the wires coming out of it and it checked out okay . Is there something else in that system that can go wrong..As far as i can tell ,without taking everything apart, the spark advancer is moving freely...Is there something in particular i should be looking for?

I thought the same thing Russ..I forgot to mention in my post, that i also installed a brand new plug and it didnt help.

No the cdi is like the little brain box that tells everything when to work

Check the wires on the CDI. A little chaff will let it ground out.
