View Full Version : Why are Dual Sports so difficult to find cheap?

Cheap i mean: low in price; worth more than its costs me.

I always figured i would come across one randomly while out searching of other cheap junk i can flip or keep. NEVER happens.

Anyone ever wonder that? Or is it just not meant to be.

Dual Sports are pretty highly desired in the Off-Road community I've found. There is something about being legally allowed to be on the streets / highways, and then just hop on a trail! And then take someone who takes a manufacturer's dirt bike (XR400 for example - for off road use only) and goes the distance to actually make it street legal - they aren't going to want to part with it. That's just my 2 cents, but I can also say that I have owned my dual sport for 5 years now and will never go another day of my life without one!

With gas prices you get the best of both worlds. Off road ability and gas savings back and forth to work. A friend of mine had a KLR250 that got close to 80mpg and was a blast off road buzzing through the trails. A regular dirtbike is one dementional unless like stated above you jump through all the hoops and get it legal.

Just the nature of the beast. They sell easy. I happen to have a mint XT 225 right now. But that will be gone easy enough. If I was a bike rider . I would def be rocking a KTM Super motard on the street !!!

this is why. seen a guy on a new yamaha wr250 thumper, we werte in traffic, well he said screw this and tore the the corn field in a suit it looked. i mean full on F U people its legal for me to do this. now a guy trying this is a nice done up 4x4 truck prob would of got a nice ticket. he beat about 10 mins of traffic.

old dual sports kinda keep value. however suzuki DR's do not so much, im talking the old 125 200 250, the 350 keeps it little more then the old 600. honda was a fool for not making an XR400L complete fool!

I had a KLR 250 and loved that thing but they aren't popular around here.

Just sold my 650l in the spring. Loved it but on the interstate at 3am everyday headed to work? Not very enjoyable. They do hold their value ad Tim stated. That's a fact. At least the honda does.

I sold my 84XL200 this spring. Paid 800 for it 2 yrs ago. It was a great deal, just not big enough for my needs, was asking 1200 for it and they were beating down the door. I ended up driving it an hour to meet a guy who gave me 1400.00! I have looked all summer for a 600 or 650 honda. No luck. suzukis galore as oldschool stated. I also agree on honda missing the boat with a 400 model!

I've been cruising Craigslist for a dual sport lately myself and have noticed how they hold their value. Even stuff from the 80s and 90s is still over a grand. I thought this one looked decent but a 4 stroke 200 on the highway would worry me a bit lol http://rockford.craigslist.org/mcy/4049616913.html

Not fun on the interstate if you ask me. I rode it about 35 miles to work and it just was not enjoyable. No win town heck ya it was.

I have been debating on just making my own dual sport. I see nice yz450 and 426's on Craigslist all the time for cheap.

Go west my friends they got more miles ect but the duel sports deals are wear peaple use them. Right now in tahoe a buddie of mine has a dr650 2000 miles would love to sell for 2k. But then his xr250 needs shocks rebuild,ktm425 needs a battarie and his xr650r with aluminum fram needs me to drive it. So a dr gets overlooked

Btw if he sells thexr650r to me my 87xl600 will go up for sale.

And if you think buzzing a corn feild past traffic is nice try lane splitting in california

Since they are a dual sport (aka dual purpose, multi-purpose, or all-purpose machine), they serve many purposes, and anything that is all-purpose seems to deserve a higher asking price, such as leatherman tools, swiss army knives, pliers, vice grips, and Simple Green all-purpose cleaner.

So after a very long time searching I have found a dual sport. Mid 90's.
Needs a piston & rings, tank plastics (flaring). I'm sure a few other items. Picking up this weekend.
I will post pictures next week.

I just bought a 93 xr250L for 500... I've put about another 300 into it & it still needs a bit of work...

I have a plated 83XR500 I bought 2yrs ago for 850 in perfect shape from a mod on thumper.com. Can't even touch it for the same money now. XL's always are at a premium over the XR's especially since you can't convert them any more in CA... No corn fields where I live but the desert is wide open :)

I made my own. Bought a clean cr500 for 1400, bought about 3-400 in led lights, batt horn, switch etc etc. im thinking about doing up a 4 poke with a quiet exh for the more sensitive places around my town.

I put shinko 705s on my xr650l and i have no problem commuting on it 70+ miles. Love this bike, mods are: shink 705s, ims xr600 4gal tank, seat concepts seat, pro taper bars, aluminum skid plate, moose bar ends, kuba lowering link, super trap exhaust, removed smog equipment, smaller rear tail light and home made tag braket, removed about 20lbs of junk metal, carb mods and jetting.

Had my passenger pegs on but typically I don't, thought there was a chance of a passenger that day.

My next purchase is going to be a FCR carb, and an oil cooler. Sometime after 10k miles I'm gonna send the head to Mickey Dunlap and we're gonna see what can be done :-)

Also wanting the get the suspension reqworked but i'll probably ride it how it is for another couple years and when the battery is finally tired I'll get a fancy lithium battery to save a few more lbs.

Oh I couldn't resist! I found a great deal on this! 180$ and has a boysen quickshot 2 installed. I went ahead and bought the adapter I need, now all I need is a few jets and a new needle. I may go ahead and get an easy adjust airscrew.

I had a XR 650.Did a little work to it.Just basic stuff,Supertrapp, air filter jetting. They are a nice bike for back dirt roads and secondary.Little big to off road for me.By the time I set it up for that gas mileage was really affected. That tank needs to be a little bigger.I sold the bike before buying a bigger one.One thing is to check the oil like how the manual states.Enjoy, nice clean bike!
