I'm going to using the part from two trikes to do a complete rebuild with. Any comments, suggestions, and otherwise are greatly appreciated.

For this investment, I'll be using a 1983 Honda ATC200E Big Red and a 1984 Honda ATC200M. I'm not doing a factor restoration. I'm not building a race trike. I'm just building something that's solid and will last. They have already lasted 30 years, so after I get done, the one that I make should last for at least another 30 years. I know it will cost quite a bit, but it'll still be cheaper than buying a new machine.

For the first phase of this project, I'm going to get a complete, rolling chassis setup. I'll be using the following parts:

From the Big Red:
- Frame
- Rear end
- Rear rack
- Seat
- Handle bars

From the 200M
- Fork
- Wiring harness

I'm going to sandblast all the metal components and give it the POR-15 treatment. I'll be installing new cables, brake components, and bearings. All fasteners will be replaced with new ones. How long is the front brake cable? How long is the rear, foot brake cable? I'm not even going to mess with the rear, hand brake because I never use it, anyway. I'm going to lower the rear rack and weld a few more places to bolt the rack to the frame, so I can eliminate the grab bar. I'm going to weld some material to the rack to make skeletonized fenders. I can always make coverings, later. I'm not sure the battery box will hold up to the sandblaster, so I'll probably have to make one. I'll be putting new tires on it, after I sandblast and apply POR-15 to the wheels, of course.

After I complete the chassis, I'm going to rebuild the engine. I will be using the engine from the 200M. I really don't need the low range. I'll be using the top end from the Big Red because 200M's top end is damaged and full of sludge. I'll be throwing a cylinder kit (size is still yet to be determined), new clutches, bearings, seal, and whatever else I'm forgetting to mention. I'll be replacing the broken, 11 toothed, drive sprocket with a 12 toothed sprocket.

I'm hoping to get the chassis done, before the snow flies. The engine will be my winter project. I'm hoping to be able to go cheat death, in the spring.

I'll try to get a camera, so I can post pictures.

I'm going to look at a camera, tonight. Hopefully, I can find something less than my firstborn. I am not giving them my Big Red! LOL!

I was able to tear down most of the components. As of now, I'm in the process of cleaning the smaller components. After I get the gunk and grime off, I'll store everything in oil to keep it all from rusting and corroding.

How do I remove the shocks from the the upper fork? I removed the 4 bolts that appeared to be securing the shocks. I'd like to know how to remove the shocks, without marring them, in the process.

Since I'm playing with a couple of deadly, 3 wheelers, I figured that I should make my last wishes known... Just in case Idon't survive it, I want the following written on my grave marker...

Umm, you can pry open the slit a little and see if it won't yank out that way. If not. Get a rag and rubber mallet and hit it on the part that the axle goes through and it should eventually slide out.

UPDATE

I was able to separate the shocks from the front fork. I just got the fork, frame, and rear axle housing back from the body shop. For what they charged me, it wasn't worth the aggravation of trying to sandblast it myself. I'm going to order a POR-15 starter kit, today.

Here are a few pictures.

By the way, I'm going to try to implement some of the ideas from the "Doomsday Trike Project" thread into the rebuild.
