hi, i have a 86 500r and 86 250r, they both have the airbox eliminated from them, i was wondering, do you guys still think its safe to run them in the snow? i keep away from watter puddles, and they never really get dirty, but let me know what you think, thanks..

Yes, it will be fine for snow as long as you adjust your jetting accordingly to cooler temps, so the engine dosent run lean, and keep an eye on it. Basically richen up your main jet 1-2 sizes, lower the needle clip one, and turn in the air screw as needed for a quick basic generic description of what to do. A lot of the sleds UNI clamp on filters which are black foam, have a lot courser pores in the filter, and UNI states that they are not for dirt use, only for snow. You just have to watch the regular filters, as when the snow hits it when the motor is hot, it melts and stays on the outside of the filter, if you touch it with your hand after you blasted through a drift it will be wet. If you ride it long enough in powdery snow, and don't put it in a heated garage, the filter will freeze. One way to avoid this is to pull the filter off and take it in the house, and set it near the heater and let it dry out. For me and winter riding, an airbox is the way to go. The filter will never get wet.

PS Lets see a pic of that 500R!!!

In extremely cold air w snow dust. If your filter isn't oiled very well, you can get a frozen/sticky slide. On a 500 that will get your attention very quickly :) Always make sure your throttle returns perfectly before firing her up.
