Don't know what the pipe is. Cool that you got the 81 atc 250R. LooKs like with new plastic and a bit of tlc it will be a nice trike.

That's an old dg pipe you had the option to get a regular full dg pipe then you had that pipe as a option which was there version of a race pipe made good mid range power but is really loud since its basically an expansion chamber with a silencer built in and more than likely needs to be repacked. Really cool piece also I like the 300r kit that's on there too.

It sucks all plastics are cut and need to be replaced. Whatever rear tires those are I got them on a 225dx. I thought they looked like a tractor tires. Nice score though, I'm always torn between getting a third gen or a air cooled r.

The head gives it away, stock fins taper around the head in a dome type shape, 300 fins go straight up.

DUDE. YOU FREAKIN SUCK.

DG one piece pipe and a 300 WHAT?!!!!

You can tell its a 300 because the fins on the side of the head go straight up and not out at an angle

And I believe those pipes are supposed to be non-rebuildable / repackable. ManBear has one. He will pitch in about it hopefully

Look at the head, the fins are straight up and down.

Very nice man. I wish my 81 had been in that kind of shape when I got it. What did you trade for it. You still have your 90 I hope.

90guy
09-27-2013, 09:49 PM
Yeah It appears to be in ok shape. I just traded a few things I had laying around some rims and tires and a few odds and ends. That 90 will never part with me it's whole life lol. It's my baby!

Thanks Jason! To be honest when I looked at it I thought it was a beat 250r with a hacked up pipe and a 83-84 top end on it. Lol I guess I was wrong

On Airfoolers.com they have an old article with pictures where they test all the 1st generation pipes. Take a look at it and I'm sure you can confirm the name brand of the pipe.

i have that same pipe on this bike

...and i love it. i completely restored the pipe and it doesnt make an abnormal amount of noise, but it exits under your butt instead of behind you so it sort of 'feels' louder. i feel like its more of a top end pipe than a mid range, but thats just me. my only complaint is that whatever you do, it'll melt your fender. i just run a crappy set of painted maiers and deal with it.

09-28-2013, 12:01 AM
Thanks for sharing! I googled it and came up with your pipe restoration but had no pics anymore was curious on the re packing. Also heat wrapping the pipe and heat foiling the fender it'll still melt it? That's kind of a silly setup then lol.

my photobucket took a dump and i never went back and fixed the pictures.

this was a little more involved than just repacking. i had to grind the welds to get the cap off, once i got it off i found the baffle in 10 different pieces. i fished the inside end cap of the baffle out and used a newer baffle from a DG silencer to make a new baffle for this pipe. got that wrapped and fit into the pipe and braised the cap back on. blasted and painted the pipe and hung it in the rafters until a few months ago.

once i fit the pipe and saw that there was no way to keep the fender off of it, i didnt try any wrapping or foil heat sheilding. it looks really bad (IMO) and i have an ugly set of fenders that are used just for racing.

Oh gotcha! I'm going to look into it a bit more. Being I like the pipe it's diffrent. But might just end up keeping it loud.

Well took it out to look closer at this beast. I was wondering ManbearPIg do you happen to have a picture of the seat mount on the back of the frame? I have no idea how that is suppose to be put together. I think I am missing parts there. I have a list of what I will be needing but will be a while before I can buy it.
I will need:
Plastics,
Front and Rear Bearing,
Air box cover,
Intake boot going to reeds
Intake boot going to the air filter
Possibly another exhaust system.

Well took it for a spin today after checking everything over. Way over filled with oil that looks like it had water in it! Big time Gray! Cleaned the carb up and dumped the old fuel. Checked the carb out. Its a 34mm Mikuni with a 340 main and a 45 pilot. Not certain where I should be at. Looks like some tuning time fun! This thing is a blast when it gets out of its hissy fit it has. Hold it wide open in first gear it sputters and dosent want to go hard but then all of a sudden it hits its power band and this thing hauls there is not enough gearing that's for sure It eats up all 5 no problem. Seems to rich to me on the bottom end. Any ideas?
And Paul, don't think I will pull the reeds or exhaust without having gaskets for it. The pipe dosent sound to bad riding on it just standing next to it idling.

Well no more riding till I can get my hands on the intake boot going to the motor. I have a big crack in mine. No wonder why the original owner said the carb needing cleaning. . But I decided since I pull that off should check out some intake porting on this bad boy! 178051178052178053178054

Don't know if it was said in here but the fl350 intake bolts up to the 300r big bore cylinders, I used one on my big bore 300 83R. Nce looking R though, everything has promise but the sawzall'd fenders. Good pick up!

09-29-2013, 07:53 PM
Thanks for that info had no idea! Now time to find one! haha! Yeah this guy picked the wheeler up looking like this to pull his drag around the yard. Said when he saw the add it had nice plastics and all that. When he drove there to look at it the guy had sawzalled everything... Wonder what he paid for it.

I love these first gen 250rs. You scored on that one!

manbearpig
09-29-2013, 09:00 PM
yup, its been ported. youre pumped. thats why it has little power on the bottom end then when the revs get higher it wants to jump out from under you.

find yourself an extended swingarm. your bike will handle better in the corners and the extra length will help keep the front tire down when it comes on the pipe.

90guy
09-29-2013, 09:20 PM
I'm going to have to find a extended swinger! I plan on flat tracking this bike! Love the looks of these 1st gens some much! Lol but if I go with an extended swinger ill have to go to a disk break setup?

This trike is just getting cooler. This is why I just keep looking for old trikes and bikes.

manbearpig
09-29-2013, 09:55 PM
no. just find an extended swinger made for 81. Westcoast swingarms were made for both 81 and 82, so if you find one of those, youre pumped. also, there are many places around that can fabricate one. there are plenty of welders here on the boards and places like HRE to fab up a swinger. ive also heard of trx450R swingers being made to fit. there are options, but it may take you a while to find, or may take a sizeable chunk out of your budget, or both.

90guy
09-29-2013, 10:00 PM
Oh thanks for the info Paul! I will be on the search for a swinger! Budget will be open to get a swinger for this 81!

While I waiting for the carb bowls and jets off the Mach z had to enjoy a nice bath to clean them up. I did some tinkering on the R. Used some yamabond to make a seal for the carb boot hole too see if that was really my problem. I started it up and was able to control my idle. So that portion is fixed. As for riding this after it's been running properly is just awesome! Never seen a powerband like this one. Dunking around and all it does it want to kick me off backwards! First time It came up I wasn't ready and might of had to change my underwear! Haha! This thing just tears!!
