Hi, and welcome to 3ww. Its kind of hard to tell just by that description. Did you only touch the top end? If you touched the bottom end what did you do to it? Did you forget to tighten down something?

Also when you took the top end apart did the crank have any play, up and down play?

Do you happen to have any pictures of the bottom end split with gears showing?

Hmm well that doesn't make much sense.. You must have had oil because i'd assume the top end would burn up before a bottom end. Do you have any pictures of what happened?

How much oil was in the the motor? What type of oil did you use? Was this oil old, and used?

Dang that sucks... Especially since its an 86.. Going to be hard to find parts for it. You would probably be better off to try and find a complete motor to swap with if it got that much damage to it, unless the cases are perfectly fine, but your going to have to split the cases and really go through and clean it now if its worth saving. Keep us updated!

Only thing that comes to mind is that something from the top-end wound up in the bottom end..a small piece of shrapnel from the 1st failure perhaps!

Once you got it running the shrapnel got run thru the transmission..insta-grenado!!

Since the engine and transmission share a common sump area its the only thing that makes sense..

Either that or you are just a really unlucky dude..some shlt happened, then after that more random shlt happened.

My money is on the 1st theory!!
