IM NEW TO 2STROKES DOES IT SOUND LIKE IM STILL LEAN AS SOMEONE SAID BEFORE? NOW THAT I PUT THE FILTER AND AIRBOX ON, THOUGHT IT MIGHT HELP. IT SMOKES . LIKE A TRAIN. I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN AN ATV WITH A CLUTCH , TILL LAST NIGHT. HOLY CRAP!!! MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN POWER THAN THE OL 185S OR THE SX. I MIGHT HAVE GOT IT INTO 4TH GEAR. I RODE IT FOR A LITTLE BIT. I CAN SEE HOW PEOPLE HURT THEMSELVES ON THINGS (THESE THINGS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL:  . I DIDNT DO ANY WHEELIE POPPIN BUT IN 3RD GEAR, I CAN SEE THAT IT WOULD BE ABLE TO WITH SOME PRACTICE, TONS OF POWER!!! IM IMPRESSED. IT STILL NEEDS LOTS OF WORK COSMETICALLY. LOOKS LIKE A MOSQUITO FOGGER HAULLING @$$. IM GOING TO TRY SOME SYNTHETIC OIL AND SEE IF THAT HELPS. IM TRYING TO FIND SOME AMSOIL LOCALLY, BUT LOOKS LIKE I MIGHT HAVE TO GET SOMEONE TO ORDER IT. I FOUND SOME LUCAS SEMI-SYNTHETIC. ANY ONE TRIED THAT???? ( NOT TRING TO START ANOTHER OIL THREAD) I HAVENT BEEN ABLE TO BUY A COMPRESSION TESTER YET. I HOPE ITS NOT SMOKING SO BAD CAUSE OF A BAD CRANK SEAL. I LIKE TO PLAY ON THIS FOR LITTLE BIT.

The title asks if its lean but you state it is smoking like a freight train...I am confused. If its smoking like a freight train then its either rich or it may need new rings depending on how bad the smoke is. The smoke coming from your exhaust at idle looks about right. What is your fuel to oil ratio? I typically run 36:1 but 32:1 is OK as well.

YEAH IT DOESNT LOOK TOO BAD AT IDLE , BUT WHILE DRIVING, IT LEAVES A TRAIL. SURE CANT RUN AND HIDE FROM ANYBODY, ALL THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO IS FOLLOW THE SMOKE TRAIL. IM MIXED AT 32:1 THIS IS THE FIRST TANK ITS HAD RUN THROUGH IT IN 10 YRS. IM GOING TO TRY SYNTHETIC AND SEE IF THAT HELPS. BUT I CANT FIND ANYTHING DECENT LOCALLY

SOMEONE MENTIONED THAT THIS VIDEO SOUNDED LEAN. I DONT WANT TO HURT ANYTHING RUNNING LEAN. AFTER I GET SOME NEW OIL ILL PUT IN A NEW PLUG AT THAT TIME AND SEE HOW IT LOOKS, IT HAS A NEW PLUG IN IT NOW, I JUST HADNT HAD TIME TO PULL IT AND SEE HOW IT LOOKS AFTER RUNNING IT YESTERDAY.

if you are talking about tranny oil I would run and get some Honda HP 80W at your local dealer. A link to this oil is below

If its blowing excessive smoke in the higher gears it could be many things....rings and seals are a good place to start. The only true way to know if your seals are bad is to perform a pressure test on the crank case. The method for doing this is below.

Harry Klemm can build you a pressure tester for 40 bucks.

It is hard to tell by hearing it idle. Give it some blips of the throttle and post it If your main jet is too small, it won't really effect your idle at all. If there is a trail of smoke your crank seal is probably bad. Letting gear oil into the crank and cylinder.

Try 44-1 oil ratio first. 32-1 may be a tad much .... and that douchebag in the video sounds like he has the choke on and had weedeater mix in it...... You may just have to get it wound up a few times and clean her out after all those years. Give it some ride time before you start throwing money at it. Good luck.....and be careful!

I run 40:1 in my R, smokes a lot less than my friends who run 32:1. I can understand your concern about the smoking if you're new to 2 strokes. You will learn to love that smell. I'd be more concerned if you're not smoking.
Keep an eye on your trans fluid, if it goes low after a ride, its pretty easy to tell its a bad crank seal.

Oh, for pre-mix I would either run Maxima 927 Castor or if you want less smoke then try Maxima Super M. Klotz BeNOL is also a very good product.

If its running good throughout from low rpms to wide open then leave it the way it is! Little smoke isn't going to hurt.. do a compression test just to see what your dealing with, other then that ride the hell out of it!:beer

Just got off the phone with a local amsoil distibuter, he said he is going to bring me a quart of the dominator, which is what he recomended vs the interceptor. He said there isnt a big difference in the two, but he said to run 50:1. Ill try somewhere between 40 &50 i reakon

Still hard to say because you aren't moving. You need to have someone take a video of you going through all of the gears. It does smoke more than mine at idle and I am running 36:1 927 Maxima castor (typically mine clears out after a couple hard blips of the throttle). I still think if you have some issues in the motor; rings/seals/etc.

Have you had that smokey pos out for a real ride yet? The previous owner could have run 20:1 in that thing and the pipe and silencer my be coated in the interior. If so it would take a real ride to burn that goo outta there.

you need to do a pressure test and a compression test.
IF it passes both, then you can look at jetting and oil ratio.
That's alot of smoke...not normal.
You may have worn rings/piston or a scored cylinder.

You think it still smokes too much?

Have you taken it on a long ride yet??? I dont think its a ring problem. Its a 2 stroke with the oil in the gas. bad rings can make smoke on a 4 stroker where the crank case oil is getting into the combustion chamber. keep an eye on the gear oil level. If its going down after a long ride that could be the smoke problem. Gear oil getting into the crank case and burning with the fuel. If you havnt been on a long ride yet and really gave it a good chance to clean out, you should try it. I always try the easiest things 1st and work up from there.
