Just wondering what i can use to do a # on a real gummed carb. I plan on filling up the wife's crock pot and heating up some sort of juice .....but what's best for a dismantled carb. If its going to be heated in the crock pot its gotta be something on the safe side. Any concoctions guys? Ive heard of lemon juice....tide in water....tsp ( but dulls the finish) ....seafoam...rubbing alcohol...and commercial carb cleaners but ive heard they have gotten weaker due to environmental quacks.

This is nothing to put in the crock pot but lacquer thinner works well. I have also had good luck with berryman's chem-dip.

ya don't put anything flammable in a crock pot. No alcohol, no lacquer thinner. Safety first!!!!

I just soaked some hardware overnight in white vinegar. Dont heat it. It will stink. Let it soak for 2 days if really rusted. It will come out super clean no rust

TSP, Tri Sodium Phosfate is an acid and is costic to aluminum. It can etch the carb body. Be careful with it.

Berryman carb dip works great, otherwise just buy the auto parts store brand and clean the he** out of it. It may take soaking it for a day or 2 and some scrubbing and reaming but you will get it. Just what these guys said don't put anything flammable in a crock pot, risk far outweighs the reward.

who cares if it stinks....i believe heating any cleaner up will more than triple its cleaning action. I will just move the crock pot outside and giv'er

chem-dip for the win!!! i haev had soem carbs so trashed you could NOT sdissamble them w/o busting them up. let them soak overnight itn eh chemdip, and i coudl take it appart by hand the enxt day w/o any issues, then let it sit again for 1 day dissambled and used hot water to rince off dip then carb cleaner to finish. new carb kit and poof! one awesome looking and werkin carb!!!

Well i tried the vinegar...didnt work worth a darn...even pulled out the camp stove and boiled the vinegar ..still didnt work worth scrap. What did work though..and real awesome ..was spray can oven cleaner. The second the foaming began , you could see the foam begin to turn brown from the crud. I just kept spraying oven cleaner then rinsed in the vinegar...then back to the oven cleaner then lots of air. Pretty inexpensive and great cleaner that arm and hammer over cleaner.

If you want to use the crock pot method, I've cleaned model airplane motors of castor oil stains (dark brown and gummy) by using anti-freeze in a crock pot and heated on low overnight. I've left some in longer than overnight (24 hours) and it resulted in some darkening of the aluminum material. It was very clean, but turned the normally bright aluminum a slightly darker shade.

I've never done this with carbs, but it did work with the model airplane motors. However, the stains and deposits are different between the two, so I don't know if it will work for varnish and fuel deposits.
