Hey everyone! Winters right around the corner and you know what that means... WINTER PROJECTS!

Last year I got my 200x in winter, blew the front tire and spent 3 months fixing everything I could.. well this year.. i'm beefing up my motor!

I want to see everyone's winter projects the way they sit as of now!

Here's mine:
179453179454179455179456179457179458

As you can tell... there's already some snow here =)

I ended up stealing the tires/hubs off my 300ex and gained a little more then an inch on width (not much but whatever)

Maybe you could let us all know what you plan on doing to your machines over the winter as well?

Here is my 1985/86 500R. I started this build in Janurary and got it ridable in march.. Through out the summer i broke several exhaust mounts on the frame and on the pipe, i fixed all that and got a new pipe, rode it several times after the new pipe and everything is holding up good, so now i will be doing a full resto on this bike, powdercoat, new plastics and tank the whole nine yards.. Should be an expensive winter..lol

My heap of poo to redo.

Most has been blasted and powdercoated, a lot throw away and trying to decide really what to do with it. It has a bandito frame now, 300ex hubs and HRE is gonna make an aluminum grab bar and prob trx450R rear disk brake on this little guy with some 18" tuff tamers.

Need a few more things for the 350X and then I am going to strip it down and paint the frame. Just got it out for the first time last month. And then with some luck my son and I will tear in to a 83 250R we picked up. But time and money might mean the R will be a couple winters of work.

180997180998 about 10 yrs ago I lost interest in my 85' 200x after I cracked my 2nd stator cover. Pushed it into the barn and there its sat. After a late night of helping a friend get his 225dx running I decided it was time to pull my 200 out. After blowing all the loose dust off I pulled the carb and cleaned it as well as the gas tank. Dumped a little gas in it and gave the kickstart 2 kicks and it fired right up. Now I'm just in the process of getting it trail worthy again. Lots of work to be done! More to come over the winter

CodyRosa
11-20-2013, 12:42 AM

11-24-2013, 12:34 PM
The motor is getting a full overhaul. I have a Wisco .20 piston and rebuilding the clutch is a must. It runs right now but smokes real bad.
The frame will get sand blasted and a new coat of DuPont paint. The rest is nos, or reproduction parts. I want to do as close to stock as I can get. The tank is in good shape and has no rust inside.
Right now all I need is plastic and time.

Some of you already know of this restoration in progress... So here it is for those who don't. :-)
I call them the Twins because I got them as a set.

distributed by argo.

$75 plus the shipping to polish your painted portion of the forks as for triples not certain. Easier to get quotes by just contacting him. Great guy!

150$ did I over pay?

Mostly a father and sons project to gain some interest that doesn't involve a LCD screen and thumbs.

We rebuilt a minibike last winter and that went well, they enjoyed it as did I.

Already made progress, can you upload video clips for the cold start? It runs but is backfiring through the carb some so I suspect timing, chain may have jumped a tooth, will investigate that further.

Nice site here already been lurking and gained considerable knowledge from post here, thanks.

I bought a 200 Brand new in 1982, wish I kept it but sold it when I joined the Marines.

chopsaw.. how on earth did you get it back 3 times? haha was it to a friend or something?.

I bought it for $150 with a blown top end because it had a new knobby front tire that I used on my 200es . I then traded it to a guy for SX parts . He ended up bringing it back . So I gave it to a buddy that had a running SX engine . A year later he decides he wants to buy one running , so its back again . I have a SX engine , geuss I'll throw it in .

Finally got to spend a couple of hours on the Big Red. Took the gas tank off and found the cap was rusted shut... and could hear lots of rust particles inside. With a lot of twisting and prying, I got the cap off - it was in a crusty state.
I took it to the blasting cabinet and it came out pretty clean. Lots of pitting but solid and functional.
184835184814 184833184834

I dumped a FEW OUNCES of rust flakes out of the tank and could see a lot of pitting and holes as a result. I'll have to patch the holes before I continue with a rust removal project.

I took the petcock out for inspection. It was working well and didn't have any damage, but while I had it off, I taped up the ports and gave it a blasting to clean the outside. Pretty clean outcome - I can read the valve positions now...
184815

I'll have to re-cover the seat, and while I was removing the remnants of the original cover, I noticed the tab on the tool compartment was rusted out and not holding in the slot. When I tried to unscrew the wing nut, I sheared the bolt off almost flush with the seat base. I ended up having to drill out the broken bolt and replace a piece of the sheet metal with a threaded nut underneath to accept a new thumb bolt. I also cut off the rusted tab and welded on a new tab to fit into the slot.
184818184821184819184822

There's much more work ahead. I've never done a restore project, so I'm learning as I go. I'll try to document the progress in this thread.

I'm thinking about the "cider vinegar" technique for stripping the rust from the tank. Anyone ever use this method - or have another method that works well?

I've used electrolysis for removing outer rust and it works well - just never used that method for an interior job.

01-21-2014, 03:12 AM
I think that tank is toast, look for another one or go plastic.

swat253
01-23-2014, 01:03 AM
Yeah cap, I've got a couple of used tanks spotted, but like all Big Red parts these days, they're wanting an arm and BOTH legs for 'em!
With the holes being on the bottom, I'm gonna beef it up and seal it with JB Weld or Bondo. Once it's solid again, I'll fabricate some kind of roller and rattle some pistol brass in it to knock off more rust, then follow up with the vinegar wash and/or electrolysis.

CodyRosa
01-23-2014, 02:20 AM
wow that tank is ridiculous.. i cleaned mine with "the works" and it left pin holes on the edges of the tank. I put JB weld putty along the holes and it worked great.

I tinker around with my welder and fabricate stuff out of recycled metal and it's been a real time saver when it comes to cleaning up rusted stuff.
