Hey everyone, I just picked up an 85 250SX and am looking to insure it so I can ride it on the trails around here. I've read a few posts saying that State Farm will insure them for less than $200. This is my first vehicle so I'm not sure the route to go and I'm a little confused about it. I read on a government website that you needed insurance before getting a plate, but the guy I bought it from, along with a few other people I've talked to say that they got the plate from the MTO without insurance. Also I'd like to know if anybody who has there three wheelers insure actually told the agent that it was a trike, or if they went through it saying ATV, I imagine that would be the way to go, but if they ask if it's a four wheeler and I say yes can I get in trouble later? I'm imaging so. Any information would be great. Thanks.

An offroad vehicle doesn't require you to have insurance in order to plate in Ontario. I have many plated trikes, but only one with insurance just so I can carry a pink slip with me when I ride.

You do need a valid drivers license of course..

Then the person handling your registration didn't know their own rules..offroad vehicle and snowmobiles don't require insurance to register and plate in Ontario.

Only time I've ever been asked for my proof of insurance was when I wanted to get a trail pass or day permit on the trail systems in northern ontario.

Just vehicles liceneed for the road..

What's with all the commas??

I get mine from,,Aviva insurance thru CAA....But MTO has never ask me for proof of insurance to plate a off-road vehicle, and I must plate at lease 7 to 10 a year!!

Wish Alberta was like Ontario. We need minimum pl,pd on insurance and a plate just to ride on public land.

It is the same..that's what we're talking about.

Machine has to have PL/PD insurance, registration & plate, licensed operator.

Anyone know if they will insure them in NY? I have a friend who was an agent but haven't seen them lately to ask.

Never asked but chances are slim..check your local insurance market.

Hey everyone, thanks for the information. I contacted Nicole and I'll be on the trails by Monday! She said I do not require license, as long as there is a licensed person in my household eligible for ATV insurance, AKA my father. I can't wait.

Well done rainman!!! Glad you found a way to get the required insurance..it's a bit of a BS routine, but it's got to be done!!

$6! Come on Jason, typo? I pay $360/year for one BR, not through State Farm though. They want me to switch everything over to them to be able to insure my ATV/C's. And I had to send them a couple of pics of the BR to prove the shape it's in.

I just had to make a quick call and send the information online, she said the offices are closed all weekend, so the application won't go through till Monday. They didn't ask for pictures or any information other than the VIN/Licence/Payment info. I was quoted at $128 for the year, so that's less than $11 a month.

Called State Farm as well, all they want to know is the CC's anything 300 or under automatically equals $128 for the year!

Good find guys and thanks for the info! Just sent my info into them to get a policy started.

My truck is insured through Aviva, but the broker is South Land Insurance, they only insure 2, 4, 6 and 8 wheeled Vehicles... Lame! Would have saved money on the truck!

No he's right at $6/month..I was told that if I switched my other vehicles to them it would drop the price from $128 to $72/trike per year.

Reading between the lines, Jason must insure other vehicles with them already..

When you guys are talking about insurance are you talking about 3rd party coverage, or full insurance? Sounds to me like Coolpool is insured for the works and you guys in Ontario are just covered for liability at those prices.

Correct basic legal minimum..PL/PD.

Never even checked the cost of collision and other perils..

I pay 6 dollars a month for my 350x, 4 for my 125, and 8 for my 250r. That is just for liability insurance. I do not have theft, collision, or fire. All my trikes are locked up, and if I damage them , I will just buy the parts to fix them. Liability is just in case I hit someone else while riding.

And yes Doug, I have my car and truck under the same plan.

Yea, i use Statefarm (Nicole McCann) in Aurora, Ontario.
For my 70 is something like $114 (88cc) and $190 (656cc, but only 16hp output) for my Taurus 650
for the year covering liability only.

To ride anywhere other than your own property you NEED:

- A valid drivers licence.
- Proof of registration and your ride needs to have the plate located at the rear where it is
clearly visible.
- Proof of insurance

Failure to provide the original (not photocopied) proof documents if ever requested
can result in the seasure of your vehicle and a fine if not jail time.
In addition, it is illegal to have more than just the operator on the ORV when in motion.
You cannot drive on the side of the road. You can cross a road to continue on a trail.
You can only use crown land trails or parks that are marked for atv use.
You cannot use trails that are maintained by a club unless they allow you to.. with a fee.
The ditch is not a side trail. A fence located on the edge of the road and/or powerline easement
is still considered part of the road easement.
You can use a road if and only if the trail end and start back up down the road...
Know your area and which roads are maintained by the provincial and municiple
departments. Some areas like Timiskamang Shores have grey areas and unmaintained
roads. These are more or less logging roads and are fair game.

Hope this helps...

El Canmexican is on to something. I pulled my policies for the quads and the Big Red. Just so we're comparing apples to apples, I pay $167 per yr per quad broken down like this. 1M liability $101, medical $12.00, fire and theft $38.00 up to $7000 and a family protection endorsement $16.00 (whatever that is?). The BR is $372 per yr, 1M liability $90.00, medical $99.00, fire and theft $123 up to $1,500, and a family protection endorsement of $60.00. Looks like I need to clean up my policy a little. The problem is that in Alberta the trike is insured as a motorcycle. I may be paying the bare minimum now. The good thing about where I live is that I can ride almost anywhere hassle free. I do worry about a non-insured ticket sometimes; they are pricey. Every cop I talk to around here say to just ride with a helmet and don't act like a moron and no one will look twice. On some days I've ridden five different machines of which only two are licenced and insured. I think a call to State Farm is in order. I wouldn't mind having all my machines at least insured if it's cost effective. Plating at $65 per yr is not going to happen; I'll pay that ticket.

I just tried to insure my Tri-Z with TD and they said it was a red flagged machine. So i asked the guy about a 250R of the same year and he was able to quote me WTF!
I guess the z is a superior machine after all :)

And the best is when people go " you can't insure 3 wheelers, there illegal... An then the arguments start... No they were never banned in Canada, yes you can insure them here in Ontario... The only hickup is we're not allowed to road ride them here technically

When my brother and I come up into northern Ontario every spring to ride the rally there is always police presence..300+ riders the cops got to make an appearance!! But since 3wheelers don't fit the 'ATV' classification and aren't allowed on the road we almost always get hassled about the stretch of the ride that goes on the roadway. But since we are part of a sanctioned event they have never given us a fine..the cops just act all tough and we give the typical 'yes sir', 'no sir' response and they let us go..

But the license and insure thing isn't a problem..it's kinda stupid about that rule here. Logic should state that if it can be licensed and insured as an 'off-road vehicle' it should have all the privileges as an off road vehicle!!
