Evening Everyone. Thought I would get a build thread started on my newest project, the Tricky Dick's Cagiva. This one will take a while to be complete as I will need to source a few parts for the restore. This will mainly be a garage queen when complete, so I plan on chroming and polishing ALOT, lol. I will try to get a few more pictures posted this weekend as I unbox some more items.

Thanks everyone. This one was sourced out of Conneticut. It is stamped 42 under the triples, I assume this is the build number from the factory? Maybe Andy can elaborate on that one. I have already started the part search and have found some good contacts thanks to ebay and robertc from the forum.

Hey Guys. Just wanted to post a quick update with some of the parts I have sourced over the last 10 months. It has been difficult to say the least, but here is what I have found. I still have a long way to go, but am slowly making progress. Patience truly is key with these bikes.

Restorable USED Parts: Front brake system, chain roller, two very nice tanks, extra set of near mint forks (Not Pictured)

NOS Parts: Fuel Cap, Fuel Cap Seal, Petcock, Tank Hardware, Tank Securing Strap, Shock Reservoir Mounts, Airbox Bleed Valve, Front Tank Mounts, Swingarm Pivot Caps, Three Tank Emblems, Magnesium Side Cover

Reproduced Parts: Swingarm Pivot Bolt, Rear Carrier, Rear Master Cylinder Mount (Not Pictured)

Stock 2 stroke clutches are engineered to slip a small amount from the factory it helps with wear on the transmission

helps to keep the engine " On the pipe".

There is a caliper seal kit on ebay at the moment (link below). I may have a line on some more if you need a second as well. As far as rear master cylinder I have nothing. I am still trying to source one myself. Haven't been able to determine the part number for it to be able to do a good search.

Another update for you all. Found some NOS items for the steering stem and triples (Lock nut, washer, needle bearings, retainer plates, o-rings, and a fork cap). Also, just got my items back from polishing! I guess technically these weren't mirror finished from the factory, but who doesn't like some bling right? Powdercoat should be wrapped up late next week, so assembly will be starting in early September. Down now to only a handful of items to source, the end is definitely in sight (Mainly fork / shock components).

on one hand I agree, that takes amazing patience to hold back, so hats off. But I think I have more respect for people like dale Shively, who has a tiger 500 that he resurrected and now races every chance he can get! It's what these machines were meant for. Sure museum pieces are cool, worth more money, and preserve the machine, but using these machines preserves the heart of the sport! But xrider, absolutely flawless work! And beautiful machine! Maybe ride it at least a little? ;) haha

xrider
09-26-2016, 08:57 AM
Trust me guys, normally I agree with you 100% on this argument. I'm not saying I will never ride this thing, but no plans for anytime in the near future. These Cagiva's are a tough restoration. I restored my tiger a couple years ago and it was considerably easier than this build. Keep in mind, the Tiger's use Rotax motors that you can still buy alot of replacement parts. Their not easy to find, but it is easier to get replacement parts if you plan to ride the thing. There is virtually nothing available for the Cagiva. With the exception of a couple universal o-rings nothing exists. It took me 2 years to find all the internals to build the motor and that includes a run of custom order pistons since even they are not available. I've had to search for parts in both Italy and the UK twice a day everyday in both English and Italian in order to get to where I am on this build. I'm just under 3 years in now and still am trying to find items to finish it.

xrider
09-26-2016, 04:39 PM
Nothing too crazy here, but I never posted pictures of them. Been saving this classic new Tsubaki chain and these awesome NOS Oakley grips for the Cagiva.

Ghostv2
09-26-2016, 04:40 PM
You know the story on how you track down all these pieces are almost as interesting as the bike. You might need to write a tutorial up and who knows what cool trike stuff will come floating up with us all searching lol.

You're doing the right thing, you can only get NOS once. If you wanted a rider you'd have one I'm sure. Or will in the future.

xrider
09-26-2016, 05:20 PM
^ That is a good point. Once I source the remaining items from the Cagiva dirt bike (less than 10 part numbers left I believe), I will share the websites, contacts, and other sources I have used to run down items for this build. Hopefully it will save others some time when trying to restore one of these in the future.

09-26-2016, 08:27 PM
Yea, I'm blown away by what you and Robert have found for NOS parts. Haven't seen him on here in a long while. I wonder how his project is going?

The temptation to fire and ride that trike would be strong, but the first time you turn a wheel on it something won't be quite as perfect as it was when you finished it. Yes Dale rides his 500 and he's my hero for doing it, but that trike is far from cosmetically mint.

Speaking of dales 500 and Cagiva, anyone get the chance to see these two meet at TF? My first time EVER seeing a Cagiva in person. They are out there, you just gotta know which rock to look under. Those rocks are too expensive for me to touch, so I don't go looking lol.

But hopefully that means we will get to see one race soon? Right?

Thanks guys, it's been a journey that's for sure. Steve, thanks again for helping out with the splined spacer. It will get added here shortly. That's good news Bill. Let me know when your ready, I'm ready to throw some fenders on this sucker. I talked with Robert about 2 months ago and he was doing well. He is still collecting parts for his Tigers and Cagivas, but is pretty much ready to start assembly. Just has been really busy lately. Hopefully we will hear from him soon on the forums as I would love to see some more pics.

Not much to report at this point. I have a group of re-pop parts which should be wrapped up late this week (seat mounts, grab bar, foot pegs). The original Answer handlebars will be done at Powder tomorrow, so I can start adding the controls. Thanks to Bill I do now have the front and rear plastics, which I have since mounted the front fender with decals. Biggest hold up at the moment is in the suspension. I need one fork cap that attaches to the slider and then I can assemble the forks. Also need to refinish my shock reservoir and send it back to Ohlins for assembly. Should have a good update in the next couple weeks.

I am glad to see you are restoring one,as I have a past (small part) with a Cagiva 200. Back around 87-88 one of my trike buddies got one wheeling and dealing as he was great at it at the young age of 16 we were.As most of our bikes at the time it had no rear brakes, and rear fenders were fiberglass as I remember because they were all cracked up.But as with his description of all his bikes"it was real fast " and he wasn't kidding! I was lucky enough to take it for a blast, not realizing the significance of what I was experiencing at the time. That November my Buddy was killed in a Hunting accident .fast forward 20+ years i reconnected with his youngest brother who was a baby when my buddy was killed to find out they had kept the Cagiva, but by this time it was basically a rolling chassis and a gas tank, but there it was. I tried for the past 8 years to buy it,not even knowing if I could even afford or even find a motor. Unfortunately this past February there was a garage fire at their residence and the Cagiva roller was lost in the fire killing any dreams I had of getting my long gone trike buddies Tricky Dicks Cagiva.

Small update here. Got the refinished answer handlebars installed along with a NOS Ricambi Cagiva Bar Pad. Also can see the new front fender with decals installed as well. I should have another update here soon. I have acquired and refinished all the items for the front forks and rear shock. Should have both back within a month. Both the rear shock and the front forks have all of the aluminum polished on them as well.

It took me a few tries, but I finally was able to find the correct silencer for the Cagiva. Even though the 83 WMX200 and the 84 WMX200 are almost identical, the silencer is slightly different. This NOS one is the correct one which is the 84 model. It has double mounting brackets which is the key for the Cagiva three wheeler. The 83 has a single mounting bracket that is also located slightly different. I actually found this only 45 minutes from my house surprisingly. This makes the full exhaust system NOS.

Did a light polish on the silencer and got it installed. I also went ahead and installed the NOS throttle assembly, and the NOS Oakley B1-B Grips. Really love how the handlebars are looking.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will definitely be glad when this is done. My goal is to have it back up on wheels by Thanksgiving which will be the 4 year anniversary of the start of the project. It will probably then take me another 6 months or so to finish the build. Most of that time will be locating the correct rear master cylinder. The exact model was only used on two Ducati superbikes, so it is pretty much non-existent these days. I believe it is the only difficult item I have left to source. As far as the Silencer, I picked it up off a Cagiva dirt bike enthusiast in Washington Courthouse, OH. The tires I was able to pick up from OC, luckily he had an extra pair from his restorations. I actually have three of the tires now. I bought a NOS one off ebay a couple years ago, but wasn't able to find another one until I reached out to Bill.

Picked up a couple more NOS items. The first is the plastic cable guide. This gets a grommet on the small side and then goes over the fuel bung, below the cap. The clutch cable and the throttle cable are then routed under the tank and through the grommet. The second are a pair of NOS Calipers. The Cagiva uses the same caliper on both the front and rear. These were surprisingly hard to locate NOS given that they have only been obsolete about 10 years.

Picked a couple more items up today for the Cagiva. What I have here are the Radiator Guards and the Secure Clips both in NOS. The secure clips are a neat part. They get pushed into a hole on the shroud and then clip onto the metal guards on the back side. A bit overkill, but cool none the less. You can see the clip on the left hand side of the second picture.

If it just simply slips over the bung they probably become a nuisance and fall off every time you try to fill the tank. Or like you said, just broke over time. I'm not sure what they are made of as I have 0 experience with these elephants other than looking at them lol.

Made some more headway. Got the Carlisle tires mounted up to a set of NOS Mitchell wheels. It was a real chore getting these old tires to stretch out to seat the beads.
