So I bought some 18x10 cheng shins and kold cutters for out back but was curious what I could run for a front tire. I'd like a 20/11/10 or maybe even a 18/11/10 front tire that I can stud. I already did the Jimmy white fork rebuild that brings the front down 3" but smaller tires sounds liek a good idea to me.
Comments, PIcs, Ideas? what do you got ?

I am in the same boat as you. Here's what I am buying for my R. Let's line em up at IceFest!

I would leave the front tire big for certain. Every time I've put a smaller front tire on a trike the first thing to suffer was the ability to slide it sideways. It's not like you're getting any deflection with the front tire already. The only thing you'll accomplish with a smaller front tire is less contact area and therefore traction.

Normally I'm with you buddy smaller tire = not good but in this situation I'm wondering if a smaller tre would but more studs in contact with the ice?? That's why I'm asking around. That front I stole from you SUCKED ( do appreciate the free tire :-) I'm nit sure if it was to big / the studs to few or too dull or a combo of both??
I rode Jeff's 500 and it steered great with the skinny on the ice but he had Kold Kutters and a lot of them

I could see why you would want to go narrower but less diameter will more than likely have an adverse effect. Look at any ice racer or flat tracker, TT, anywhere you slide. Tall front tire and tiny rears. It's proven Danny boy.

I got some 18x10x8 rears so we agree there!!!! For the front what if I ran a 22x7x10?

I could see if you wanted to go narrower with the entire wheel but I can't say I'd personally put a narrower tire on the wide wheel. Maybe I'm crazy, but I can almost imagine the diameter of the narrower tire decreasing because of the beads being farther apart? I may be over thinking that. If that tire you took from me still has those bunk studs in it that's your problem right there. I told you that those had to be switched out for Kold Kutters when I gave that to you.

Good point!!!! THe jimmy white manual tals about running skinny tires on that stock rim so I was just wondering? the manual says a 21x8x10 on a 7" wide rim with a 2+5 off set for the front

Index the studs and replace the bunk ones, you'll be all set. You may want to order some more Kold Kutters because I was debating on getting my studded Fast Trekkers back from you soon to put on my R.

I order new tires and rims and 1000 kold kutters so you can have those for your R. Hoping to get the 500 on the ice this winter :-)

i personally would run the narrower tire. i had a tecate and raced it for some of this last season. the fat tire gets to much push for me. mine had a 4x1 offset 10in rim on it with a 22 maxxis razor or something like that. that rim is readily available and gives you lots of option's for tires. sometimes less is more in terms of surface area contact. you'll be putting more weight down on the narrow tire than you will with the fat one.
Dan, if you decide to go narrow tire lmk, i have a 22x8x10 front tire that is like new i had bought for my tecate and didnt use. i would give you a good deal on it.

here's a rim from ebay. this is readily available from any place selling new aluminum wheels. this wheel was used on a few different quads, some yamaha and some polaris.

the wheel will sit slightly offset between the forks. not enough to really notice but if you get a tape measure out you will see it. i know it was under 3/8 in.
i got your pm on the tire, i paid $25.00 for it so that what i'll take. i will try to get you a pic before the weekend is over.

If I remember right it was offset by 3/16". It handled fine that's why I never bother correcting it. If it was a wheel you were going to use permanently you would just need to chuck it up in a lathe and take a hair off the hub to get it perfect.
