I am starting this thread because lately a few of us have picked up 2nd generation 125m's (1986 and 1987's). I searched a few post with the search feature but came up empty handed on most of my questions. I didn't know if I was going to resell this 87 or keep it but I think I have decided to keep it. I simply fished for new trikes and this one landed in my lap for a very small price that I could not pass up. Its an 87 of course I'm going to snatch it...duuh
By the way for you folks that don't know much about them, these have reverse!
#1. I would like to know other than the headlight, what other parts interchange. I doubt many will from my research.
#2. I also would like to know the production numbers. All the links I have seen posted about the numbers do not have this particular model listed.
#3. Also the rear rack mounting pieces that screw down to keep the rack in place, look to me to be the same as the 250sx. Does anybody know if someone has re-popped these? I know I had an 86 that used these.
#4. Plastic gas tanks. I have searched for these as well. Does anybody know if they were offered for this trike?
#5. I am sure this has been addressed but I am having a heck of a time getting the front axle off. A bearing must be seized. I know the 200es has the same silly round axle on the left end. I am heating and beating but does anyone else have a trick other than that?
I know there are a few of you guys out there that are very sharp on these Shortline and Howdy I'm calling you guys out. So If you knowledgeable guys could please take a minute or two and share with us, we would appreciate it. Also if there are any other OWNERS or past owners that are curious about something else with these cool rare atc's feel free to post up your questions.

No plastic tanks have ever been made for the 86/87 that I know .
To remove the front axle heat the brake drum were the axle goes threw it and use an air impact to break is free by spinning the axle . Some times the bearing spacer is the issue and if its that cut the axle and buy another lol .
I would like to know the production numbers as well , gotta be a low number .

Mike is 100% correct. I have heated the front axle before and had good luck getting them out. I heated it red hot and then sprayed the joints with pb blaster, then waited a while heated it again and repeated the spraying. I did this 4-5 times and the axle did come loose. It was siezed in the hub.

Well gentlemen persistence is key! I went out to the shop and in between other projects, I heated, beated and sprayed the joints down. I was able to break it loose and even save my axle. It was seized to the right fork, and drum/hub assembly. The spacer was the only thing that was loose. Thanks for the help. I have no idea what I am going to do about a tank yet. This one is nice on the outside but trashed inside and leaks. If anyone has a spare, dont hesitate to contact me. I may try a 200 tank but I think they mount differently.
Thanks for the encouragement!

As far as the production numbers, the 86 model year ran right around 8,500. I don't think we were able to track down the stats on the 87's however.
BTW weezy if you do ever decide to part with it, pleases give me a shot at the front rack first :naughty:. Been searching for my 86.

The '86 '87 & '88 200sx electrics are the same as the 2nd gen 125m head lite mounting bracket is also the same!

I will be waiting! Thanks. I will pm you my info! I am swapping the tires this week and cleaning the carb. I hope the mosh's can do some good with that seat pan booger-ed up in the front. I wonder if the 00s rear trunk is the same. Mine has no cracks but is super faded.

How about a seat? I just checked a 200x and its NOT the same. It looks close but the M has this clip that fits under the tank. The X does not.

I am having a problem now that I got new tires for it. I planned on going to the one piece rims which I have from a 200s. Problem is the bolt holes are bigger on the 125ms hubs. I am sure I can drill these out but then I have another problem. The holes are now too close to the rim to get an impact on them. I suppose I could swap out the hubs but I am still faced with the front rim issue as well. I hate knowing I have tons of rims but cant us them. I have found 2 parts trikes but who knows when I have a chance to get them.

So I have been working on this 87 125m off and on when I have time. I picked up a 1987 trx 125 and thought with a little luck the seat and exhaust would be interchangeable. This is not the case. I did get the wheel situation figured out though. I used hubs and rims off a 200s on the rear. Then on the front instead of trying to change out the hub, I mounted a tire on a rear rim from the 87 trx125. Fit is perfect. I hate split rims and tubes as well.
Bought a new carb off ebay along with a new petcock and also bought a used tank from RDH/86200X. The tank had rust in it so I purchased a gallon metal rescue. It worked great. I wish i would have taken before and after pics on my digital camera instead of on my phone. The results were awesome.
So one major thing I have not been able to track down or find are the knobs to bolt the rear rack on with. If anyone has one, I would love to borrow it to have my buddy's machine shop make a dozen or so. Sx are the same as well.
I was able to get a good deal on some kenda front max size 22x11-8. Needless to say(see pics) these are going back! They are the correct size but there is no way they will work. So just a tip, no idea why they are so much bigger than all the others this size but stay away.
So all in all I have a good running 87 125m that is fun to ride and I don't have much in it.
This will not be a show queen so I don't plan on restoring to a shine. I will be on the lookout for a few things such as a new/used seat pan to send to cosmic quads and maybe an exhaust.
I will have it at trike fest for sure so if you want to ride it, come see me.

I have a good 86/87 125m seat pan if you need one also an aftermarket blue seat cover . I haven't tried one but was told a 200s foam will work .

Side by side the 125m seat and the 200s seat look almost identical. The pans are different but I think the foam would work. If you want a can take a pic of my m seat next the the s seat I plan on selling.

recently found out, these bikes share a lot of parts with the 87-88 trx125. engine, air box, and electric parts are the same. since these parts made it on a four wheeler, many are still available from Honda. (my guess)
yaaaay for parts being available but boo for the reason.

I seen you said the exhaust and seat did not work for you but no mention of what is the same (interchangeable). so I figured I would give that info. I do have 1 question for you wheezy, you said you had to buy new carb off ebay even though it sounds like you bought a whole 87 trx 125. are the carbs different? I can see they have a different part # but look the same even in the microfiche. I would have assumed having same engine, they would have same carb.

I bought the carb before I found the trx but I bet they are the same. I would also think the headlight/on/off switch should be the same as well. Grab bars fit as well.

Tires are an issue...my 125 has perfect tires on the rear and had a Carlisle on the front! So I searched and found the same tire .had it mounted on the 2 part rim put it on the trike I will be damned ! the tire ended up larger than the rear....Just can't win.

Very nice thread. I have a '86 and really like it. I do not have any accessories, like racks or anything like yours weezy. And it does not look as good as Ol deuce's. Mechanically everything works perfect, just cosmetics. Missing trunk lid, headlights brackets are bent, headlights is missing lense, seat needs help, front fender is cracked, previous owner trimmed off the bottom of the rear fenders around the pegs and worst of all they tried to re-paint the tank. I am looking forward to any more info that comes out here.

Mickey parts are hard to find for these rare trikes as you probably know. I have located 4 86-87 parts machines but I have no idea when I can get to pick them up. They are 2-3 hours away. When I do get them and see whats good, I will post up here and get some parts in the classifieds for you guys. I already have at 3 one people needing fenders front and back in front of you.

Thanks weezy, I appreciate the research. You are right... Very hard to come across parts for these. I too have also found other '86's (never any '87's) for sale somewhat close to me but my time is so limited and or the bikes are so beat down its not worth it. Just cool to see a little following for these models.

Thought this would be a good place for this. I will get better scans of it this weekend and post them up in the correct order. It is the dealer assembly instructions for the 87 125m.

Hey Captain, I was wondering about the forks... I have heard '83-'85 (125 & the 110's)forks are the same as '86-'87's...? I have yet to find a definitive answer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mickey.

I love my 86 to me no other bike that quite compares. I like to say that since this was one of honda last retools jobs honda did on the atc line that they got all the bugs out and made something absolutly amazing.

There are a few minor differences between the 86 and the 87 that I have noticed since I now own both years. The 86 has a steering lock with the helmet holder integrated with it on the neck of the frame. The 87 doesn't have the steering lock and it's helmet holder is part of the headlight bracket. So with that, the forks are different between the 2. Also, the rear taillights are different as the back of the 86's is black and the 87 is white. There are probably more differences but thats just what I have found in the few days of having both years of the 2nd gen 125m in front of me

Mrtwistedwheelersworld makes the fiberglass fenders for the 2nd gen 125m. They look like they are really nice. I haven't gotten a set personally because I ended up getting a nearly new set of rear fenders for my 87 for a good price. I have a set of fiberglass fenders for an 83-85 110/84-85 125m from him and I'm really happy with them. I expect the 2nd gens to be the same.
