Not a trike, but another obsession of mine.. Smith and Wesson revolvers.

I went to the gunshop with my brothers yesterday because one of my brothers had to pick up his wifes Christmas present (a Smith and Wesson model 36, 38spl snubby).

Dealer had a barely used Smith and Wesson 460XVR with a 5" bbl. Price was descent to begin with, but since my family and I do a fair bit of business there, he dropped the price by $100. So for $895 plus tax I could take it home...But I didn't.

As we left the shop driveway, I was a little bummed because I for some reason got a tickle from that big super magnum. But,it's Christmas time and I just don't have the extra money for a toy for myself at this time.

My brother tells me he will buy my S&W 686 for a price that covers over 2/3 of the cost of the 460 XVR. When he convinced me he was serious, I took him up!

It does sting a little selling the first S&W I ever bought. But I will get another 686 at some point. That 460 is just bad to the bone!

I'm not going to get into alot of technical specifics, but there is only one other handgun in the entire world that is more powerful than the 460 S&W Magnum, and that's the 500 S&W Magnum. The 500 throws heavier bullets and hits harder, but the 460 is faster and flatter shooting. If you scope a 460, you can zero at 100yds, and still shoot easily to 200yds and beyond...out of a handgun!! :D The 460 Mag will throw a 200gr slug at over 2200 FPS.

If you want to see what this big ol hog is about, there are plenty of vids on youtube. Nothing like vaporizing mellons and things to relieve some stress. LOL!

I go and put it on my CWP this tuesday and will be bringing it home that day as well. In NY, you have to take the receipt to the pistol license office and add the weapon to your permit before you can take possession.

I'll post pics when I get it home if anybody is interested.... But here is a link to the Smith and Wesson website to the one I am picking up... http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_765656_-1_757767_757751_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

Going to be fun handloading for this cannon! :Bounce:lol:

That 460 is badass, a friend of mine has the 460, after shooting one I was in love now thinking of buying it if Santa don't come through!
Good job ride-red!!

Well, the only X-Frame experience I have up to this point is firing a compensated 500 with a 4"bbl. I found it to be not much worse than my non-compensated 44 mags.

One drawback to the 5" X-Frames, most of the major gunleather makers only offer holster rigs for the 8-3/8" models. To get a holster for the shorter barreled X-Frames you pretty much need to go custom.

Here is the rig I have all but decided to go for when the tax man cometh.. http://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/Chest_Holsters.php

It's a little spendy, but I intend to do some serious handgun hunting with this bad boy. I already have a handy-dandy telescoping quick adjust shooting stick and went out a few times just carrying my 44 this year already. It's not so much the extra power of the 460 I really need, I like the extra confidence for the longer handgun shot. And for that, the 460 is second to none! :)

If I can figure out how, I'll have someone get some vid of firing it when I get it home.

I shot a friends ONCE! Like my firearms but man that thing is just nasty. Was so excited to shoot it, I went up took the shot without my muffs on. BIG mistake. Ringing ears for literately the next 25 minutes. Another friend shot it and burnt his finger having it too close to the chamber. What is it now, close to $4 a bullet? Nice hand cannon I just don't have a "need" for it myself. lol Enjoy and be careful who you let shoot it. Not that your not safety conscious, but you've seen the videos.

Yep, it's definitely not for the novice wheel-gunner.

I have seen pics of digits partially blown off by improper grip when firing an X-frame. Your friend is very lucky he only burned his finger.

From what people who own these tell me, hearing protection MUST be used, even when hunting. I can tolerate 1 shot fired at game with a 44 mag and no more than that. When punching paper indoors, double protection is advised with the 44. First time at the indoor range with my first 44, I used muffs only and had ringing ears for a few days.

But the 460 is a totally different critter. Double hearing protection at ALL times when punching paper (and I will happily do so). And everyone that I have spoken to that hints with them advise to not go unprotected even when hunting, under no circumstances. I'm thinking of getting some "smart" ear plugs as opposed to electronic muffs for hunting. Trouble with electronic muffs is while you can hear, you can't hear where the sound is coming from... So I am thinking something like these would work well for hunting with the 460, http://www.earplugstore.com/electronic-ear-plugs.html

The ONLY thing I will shoot without protection is a 22 rifle. Even 22 handguns I use plugs. All handguns I use protection, unless hunting. But the 460 will not be even remotely close to as tolerable as a 44 for one shot at game....And the 44 isn't pleasant by any means...

Yeah, factory ammo is pricey. But I have recently started reloading my own ammo. It's just a matter of a $70 die set, and then start slowly accumulating components. Should be able to reload some max performing rounds for appx $1 per round once I build up a small stash of brass by buying factory ammo.

Yep, NY is one of the most strict states when it comes to handguns. They are way out of line.... it's ridiculous

Nice thing about the 460 is you can shoot .45 long colt and .454 casull out of it. I've been eyeballing one up at a local gun store also. They want $975 for a used one, I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit.

$900-1000 seems to be the average going rate for a used X-Frame. The nice thing is, most X-Frames for sale used are in most cases VERY slightly used! People will buy them as a novelty and find out they aren't comfortable firing such a powerful handgun and trade it in with less than a box of ammo run through it.

I think I did good for $895. Then again, my family does alot of business at this little shop. I'm sure most other people would not have gotten 100 off right off the bat. All said and done, my price out the door including tax was $966.

Getting ready to leave for the pistol license office here in a few. Going to bring the cannon home and vaporize some leftover Halloween pumpkins today! BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!! :D

At least your not in Onondoga county, it borders on ridiculous trying to even get a pistol permit. When I lived in Texas it was easy, show a drivers license, pay for the pistol and a couple minutes later your walking out with it. Here you need references and a 6 month background check wait.

RIDE-RED 250r

It's the same process here in Oneida County.

The difference is the family court judge from one county to the next. Some refuse to issue any permits, some are real good about issuing even with unrestricted, and others (most) are good about issuing, but place restrictions on them.

I hear you have be a cop, retired cop, or "connected" to get a pistol permit in Onondaga County. Your DA Bill Fitzpatrick is a tool too! He is on the record trying to say that because the Fed Judge that struck down the 7rd limit on magazines is from the western NY district, the judge's ruling only applies to WNY!

One question though, why on God's green earth would you move from TX to NY??!!

You guys think its easy being a gun owner two town over from Newtown CT? lol its like, if you even mention the word GUN, someone pops out of the thin air to call you a Blood thirsty, children hating, back woods republican Neanderthal! I feel bad for those children and their families but, this is just another glaring example of why gun free zones don't work and why the Liberals dream of a gun free society is more likely going to be a nightmare! Wait till the gangstas start hitting up the Pot stores in CO. where the owners / workers cant have a gun to protect themselves... lol

The only issue I take with your post is you assume the progressive/liberal mind REALLY believes that firearms restrictions will actually curb violent crime.

It's my belief they know darned well it doesn't work. There are piles and piles of real life statistics that prove our side of the argument right. One shining example: Chicago.

It's not about their desire to "keep us serfs safe". Those in the political ruling class elite could give a rat's posterior about our "safety". Their agenda is about controlling US via taking away our weapons. Plain and simple. It's progressivism and it is evil.

Oh they believe, believe me they believe, they have been brain washed by their all mighty leader and think that every one of us who gives up our weapons (thus pissing on the Constitution) means someone, somewhere is going to be safe. They have been indoctrinated by their elected officials and really think what they say is the truth. Ever try and talk to a liberal about gun violence? it doesn't work, they will argue their point and as soon as you start to make sense, they tell you your stupid or you just hate Obama or you are just repeating the republicans lies and they walk away. WE know its not about our safety, WE know what the government really wants, but they seem to think they are saving the world!! they cant seem to remove the blinders from their eyes and see the government could care less about them, you or me..lol

lol Brainwashed Drones... nice, I call them Zombies. Once that worm gets into their brains and eats away at their common sense, its all over!

Yes! I see that now... lol I agree 100% they are the ones pulling ALL the strings. And yes, their end goal is to completely throw out the constitution and rule over us all while telling us how much we need them and how much they car for us and how much we love them.. lol
Ya know it makes me cringe every time I hear, "There should be a law..." or "Cant the government do something about this?" They have most of the country believing we cant get on without big brother wrapping his cloak around us and protecting us from not only outside aggressors but from ourselves too.

Those are good reasons and I can absolutely relate.

Family here is the reason I haven't already moved to TX myself. Both sides of my whole family are here. I don't want to take my kids from their grandparents and the rest of the family....

But even that has it's limits with me. I'm still waiting to see how the UN-safe act pans out in SCOTUS when it eventually gets there.

Red- any recommendations for a good holster? Kinda want a shoulder rig for this one...

RIDE-RED 250r
06-03-2014, 08:24 PM
Well, I have a Guides Choice chest rig for my 460 from these guys and am extremely pleased with it.. http://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/Diamond_D_Custom_Leather.php

But unfortunately, it doesn't look like they offer the std shoulder rig for Smith wheelguns.

I have a Hunter vertical shoulder holster I carry my 629 Classic with. It's not terrible, but could be better and more comfortable when carrying for long periods of time.

Those are the only non-hip carry rigs I have experience with... But a few I have researched seem to get very good reviews are Alessi: http://www.alessigunholsters.com/shoulder-holsters/

Andrews Custom Leather: http://www.andrewsleather.com/

Simply Rugged: http://shop.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Holsters.cfm?cat_id=669

And then of course there is Galco: http://www.galcogunleather.com/shoulder-holster-systems_8_2.html

Bianchi: http://www.bianchi-intl.com/products/concealment/shoulder-holsters (I have a few Bianchi hip holsters and they make nice stuff)

DeSantis: http://www.desantisholster.com/ (I also have a couple of DeSantis hip carry holsters and am pleased with them as well)

Luckily, your 686 being a 4" opens up more options than if it were a 6" model.

Nothing I have seen via the old inter web, is all that appealing to me... I have a Galco fletch for my Sig Nightmare, and it's pretty nice, but hiding a gov't size 1911 isn't what I would call summer friendly! http://thorshammercustomleather.com in AZ makes some very sweet leather goods... Anything you can imagine. Have had him make me a couple holsters before... Guess when you got something in specific in mind, (at least for me) nothing else will do! Haven't even had it a week, and a custom made rig is what I think it's gonna take... It's kinda disturbing how in love I am with this 686 in such a short amount of time!
