Frozen this n' that, power out?
Roads bad with more on the way?

It was -20 yesterday here in Eau Claire, WI. My Auto-X started and ran like a champ for a few romps.
Starting tonight. Temps are going to drop around -30 for a couple days with wind chills around -60.
Is also been 0 or below zero for 3 to 4 weeks around here. Extended forecast shows 30's for the next few weeks after the deep freeze.

We had 12 below on Christmas eve and it was 17 below the night of Jan 2. Haven't had it this cold in a few years. I can remember when I was a kid back in the 50s & 60s it wasn't unusual to have this cold weather in the winter. Snow hasn't been bad yet, have about average for this date. Can't wait for summer.

Horribly cold here in Chicago last night and will be worse Monday. have about 12" on ground now and expecting 6-8" tonight. Been riding like crazy. Been able to take snowmobile on city streets because the plows cannot keep up, so side streets have 2-3" during storm. Was at my brothers one street from city of Chicago territory. there was a couple of guys out on snowmobiles on the roads and alleys. I have a Trike over there right now so we joined in.
I don't mind this bitter cold as long as it keeps snowing. I just hate it when its 0 and no snow. it = 0 fun

It's been really cold here, down to zero for a couple of days. Got a pretty good snow storm and I'm gonna go toss the 4 Snows on the SX right now. Typical winter weather here.

On the news they were saying the weather conditions are going to be "life threatening" during the next couple days.... Not sure what that means, snowy and cold is pretty typical... Super bummed though, supposed to be getting over a foot of snow but I blew a head gasket in my sled a couple nights ago and I doubt the new gaskets will get here in time :(

It will be below 40F on Monday. Down here those temps are life threatning, but in Canada we called it beach weather. It is hard to belive that people can die from those temps, but I guess if you live in a carton box it can happen.

It is indeed very hard to believe those temperatures could cause a problem, but I guess if people are not accustomed to it then it is what it is. I went to autozone and to get a haircut today and I wore shorts and a t-shirt :wondering I can't imagine anyone freezing to death indoors at only 40 degrees...

Then again when the Mexicans hear of people dying up North at 110F in the summer they can't belive it. Go figure.

We had legit -40 on TH. That's without windchill. The gov. called school off on Monday statewide. Apparently it is supposed to be -26 and -50+ including the windchill. This is the coldest stretch that I can remember. Seems like it has been like this since the first week of December.

-30 to -40 could be deadly if you fell outside and were unable to get up or get help. Working outside in the natural gas industry for 20 plus years gives me the upmost respect for those temps when they dip below 0. Its not so much your core temp but face, toes and fingers that are really vulnerable. Gonna be interseting and cold at work this week. I have 15 gallons of kerosene, wood for the fireplace, and plenty of gas in the vehicles and reserve in case. That 23,000 bto kerosene heater is the best thing I ever bought. Needs no power and heat my whole home for 12 hours plus on under 2 gallons, more if you keep it turned down. A great feeling when the power may be out! I still have wood for my fireplace too but that heater is way less work and mess. Got the generator full and ran it yesterday for a bit just in case. Would not take long for your pipes to freeze in -30 or -40 weather trust me, I see the damage of uninhabited homes daily. Better to over prep in this type of cold......especially when they have gave you fair warning. The main thing I guess is to just stay home or inside if you have no legitimate reason or emergency to go out in that type of cold:beer Oh ya....I have 2 30 packs of busch light also...........lol.....

Generators are pretty common, i have one and quite a few of my friends do also. Those who don't have gens usually have some source of heat that doesnt require power, wood, gas, propane buddy heaters, you name it. I have a generator as well as a couple of those propane buddy heaters that have the oxygen sensor on them so they can be used inside safely. If the power goes out i usually switch to gen, if its the middle of the night i will just run the heaters to keep the house temp up and worry about the gen in the morning if its still out. But either way its only been a minor inconvenience at most.

I burn wood with a big royal wood funrace but you still need to be abe to run the fan to keep it cool otherwise my house will burn down. So when the power goes out i backfeed the house wth a generator and keep the woodstove fan and fridge going and of course the tv lol. It is scary because if the power ever happened to go out for some odd reason when I'm not home the woodstove would not stay cool and possibly overheat and catch on fire.

You would be surprised. You guys have more ice than us up here. Red Lake only has maybe 15 inches and the area lakes in Bemidji only maybe 9-12. I was down in the cities over Christmas and people were driving on the lakes there and trucks were going through up here. We got two feet of snow the middle of December and pretty much halted the ice.

Freezing rain tonight in Glen Rock. Turned into my driveway at about 2 mph and slid right off, down a 75 ft steep embankment, and into a stream. The ice was so bad I literally could not walk back up the driveway. Currently awaiting a tow truck. Standby for pics soon.

Still pouring here and......freezing! If you ever been to Glen Rock you would also know that Camo is probably not exaggerating about the drop. It is down in a valley and not for the light hearted driver during this kind of weather. Except for about a mile through the center of town it's mostly all up and down streets.

Nothing too far out of normal for us out here in Western NY. Might be a little colder for a day or two, but manageable.
I've been out in Morris MN back in the early 2000s and it was brutally cold. I think the high for the two days there was
-26 and the low was -35. The darned windchill was -75 according to the news as it was very windy that week, but I
learned my respect for the cold and winter that week in MN even though I grew up north of Buffalo.

So I was making the inverted hairpin turn into my driveway when my truck lost all traction and slid off the side. I initially tried to steer out of it, but the truck went up on 2 wheels and began to flip. I countersteered out to save what I could, got all 4 tires back on the ground, and "gently" guided he into the stream. With lots of digging, I almost was able to drive it out, but the dirt had turned to mud under the tires because of the stream and I literally had dug my own hole...
So after 2 hours of digging, being up to my knees in mud, and being freezing rained on I finally relented and called a tow truck. I must admit I felt a little less embarassed after watching the driver slip at the top of he driveway and literally slide to the bottom, flailing his arms and legs and screaming in terror:lol:
After some more digging, we were able to winch the truck back up the way it came in and surprisingly the truck was fine. Not bad for a $1000 beater from 1987.

Yeah, a rollover would have been very bad...especially considering that in my infinite wisdom I unbuckled before turning into the driveway. I'm reaching a point in my life where I think it would be prudent for me just to wear a helmet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...
