1983 Big red rectifier trouble, 4 and 6 pin connectors?

i have a 1983 honda big red, the harness that came with the bike was for a 1984 and didnt work right, so i ordered a 83 off ebay. now it has a 6 pin connector to the rectifier while mine is a 4 pin.
can i splice and patch wires, or do i need to order a 6 pin rectifier, according to my manual the 83 has a 4 pin not a 6 pin
the manual only shows the 85 200m to have a 6 pin
ive had it up to my elbows on these wiring harnesses, this is the 4th and still incorrect harness ive ordered:crazy:

Generally, rectifiers are not rocket science.

This wire goes here and this goes there, kinda thing.
KB did a writeup and someone else has just posted on how to add a rectifier
to a non battery trike.
Some sort of universal rectifier.

Maybe try the search key?

Generally, the stator puts out ac voltage, which needs to go to dc current to charge a battery.
Some of the less evolved bikes simply use ac voltage for lights.
I better stop before I make things worse.

I'm sure it's do able and a few have done it.
I just hope they chime in or you can find it.

I'm a bit confused here... You say the harness you have now is supposed to be an 83 but its a six wire regulator?? There is no such thing on any of the 200's, i don't think any trike period. They are all four wire units except for the five wire 85 and later models, the two AC wires from the stator/alternator and the DC positive and negative out. Most of them are two yellow wires from the stator/alternator and a red positive and green negative on the output.

The service manuals are available on my website, link below in my signature. They are a lot better than the Clymer manuals.

its a 83 200e wiring harness (supposed to be) which should be 4 pins, the harness has 6 pins no question. 5 pins are used 2 yellow, 1 green, one black, one red.
i have a honda 200 cylmer manual it has the diagrams for all the honda 200 atc's and the only one with a 6 pin is the 85 200m, i guess ill throw another harness out and spend another 40 on another, this sucks, im loosing my appeal to these old bikes fast!

The term Big Red is misused a lot.

If you are throwing good harnesses out, that don't match your model, rather than returning them or reselling them, you may have to remain "at the back of the pack".

This has been very frustrating, if my bike wasnt all rigged up to start with i would not have had the trouble, i may be at the back of the pack on the computer but remain out front on my bike thats what counts to me

You may possibly have a motorcycle reg/rec. Assuming it isn't missing one yellow wire, it was used on a bike with a full wave stator(2 phase).
Doesn't really matter though.
Almost all Honda reg/recs are wired like this...
The two (or three on a three phase) yellow wires connect to the stator.
The red wire goes to the battery to charge.
The black wire goes to power the ignition switch, a regulated positive wire.
On Hondas, green is ground.

It may work on your trike.

Regulator rectifiers are very simple units, just some diodes really. I've used kawi regs on Hondas, Suzuki on Yamaha, don't really matter if you know what each wire does.

Ah yes, five pins.. Sorry i typo'd on my last post i meant to say the 200M has five not four.. You threw me off when you said six!

You can make the five wire regulator work on the earlier years, just don't use the black wire. The yellows are the AC input, the red is the battery charging output, which on the 83 would be the DC for the lights and battery charging and the green is the ground.
