Howdy folks, been a while since I was on here, gettin started in college slowed my 3 wheelin a bit unfortunately. Anyhow, I've been havin some troubles with my '86 250ES. I'm thinkin CDI, but I thought I'd ask some opinions. Symptoms are sputtering and occasionally dieing, but it's electrical, not carbeurator. It acts almost like there's a short in the ignition wire but I've tested it and there's not. I'm going to try swapping the coil tomorrow and see if that's part of it. I would swap a CDI, but my other Big Reds are all '85s. What do y'all think?

That could be one of a dozen different things causing that. Start with the coil and report back on the results.

The stators do sometimes fail on these. A friend of mine had an 86 that would start and run great for ten mins, then die. A new to him used stator fixed it.
I think i have a spare one. Havent checked it or ohmed it out yet. Try the coil and plug first

Had the same symptons on mine, then oned day it didn't start. Ditto on the stator. Replaced mine and it was fine. Funny that it was still showing voltage when tested but my problems were intermittent and I had already replaced the CDI and coil so it was the last probable problem. Found a used one on e-bay that came with the side cover for pretty cheap. The stator I got had been replaced as well because it looked different than my OEM but it fit fine. I think Honda redesigned them after having taking note of the initial problems.

Well I swapped the coil and that didn't make a difference, but when I put a new plug in it started runnin right again. Never had a plug do that before, seems strange. It was in tight and making good connections, and had a perfect gap. It was even that nice tan color it's suppost to be, not burnt up.
