I'm trying to determine if one of my differentials is having a problem. I have two that are removed from the bikes. The first one I know works good since I removed it myself from a good running bike. It turns smooth and easy and makes no noise at all. The second unit I purchased used. This one turns easily but I can hear a slight continuous sound of the gears moving together. Could this be a sign of the pinion gear or bearings going bad? Is there a way of testing them without them being installed on a running bike? I would appreciate any help with this.

Almost always ,your problems start with the pinion bearing. If there is grimy, greasy oil that has escaped up towards the driveshaft, most likely it needs serviced. It MAY even have some play if you get it in a vise, and have any play on your pinion shaft. It's shot. Popping it apart and inspecting is a piece of cake too. Good luck.

I think I will be better off sending it back for a refund.
Thanks

Send it to me and I can do a complete rebuild on it. Make it like new. How much did you pay for it?

$150 should buy a good one. I would send it back and rebuild the one you have.
