I recently obtained a 1983 Honda 185s atc from my grandfather. It sat in his barn for a long time and I told him I would like to get it running for him and use it from time to time. Well he ended up giving it to me. Awesome, I know right!!
Well I cleaned the carb, put new spark plug in it, and clean fresh gas. While tearing everything down I came across the fact that the recoil cage for the starter was gouged, the throw out springs were bent. So finished with carb clean, and put everything together and got it running. Now I need to replace the recoil starter and can't afford it yet. Is there anything else I can do, short of push starting it which I can't do on my own with the snow and ice, to get it started so I can play around? Make shift pull rope?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am new to the site as a member but have found other info that worked out great for my needs. Thank you all for being part of suh a great group.

You have to be careful, but you can wrap the recoil rope around the cage (the part that bolts to the stator), and pull-start it that way to get you by in the short term. Obviously you don't tie off the end of the rope (should go without saying).

A recoil rebuild kit (http://www.amazon.com/Sports-Parts-Starter-Complete-Rebuild/dp/B003CNDC7U/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1390527538&sr=8-2-fkmr1&keywords=atc+recoil+starter+rebuild) is pretty cheap. I've rebuilt a couple of them. I like to fully disassemble it and give it a good cleaning. The coil spring is a bit of a pain to get re-installed, but manageable.
