i having a problem with my gearing. i want top end but i want to be able to rip it too. i just don't understand the gearing. if i go smaller in the front it gives me low end, it i go bigger in front it boost my top end. and if i go bigger or smaller in the back, what happens.what is a happy setting

Smaller in the back gives you more top end speed. Have you ever ridden a mountain bike? Just picture the gears, and how they affect the resistance in the pedals, and speed.

I have stuck with the stock gearing on my trail bike. You need to just experiment to find your own happy medium. For me, I don't need more top speed.

Smaller front, or larger rear brings you into the power band sooner, but restricts top end speed. A larger front or smaller rear sprocket will get you more top end speed, but at some point the engine won’t have enough power to rev out and you may end up with a lower top end than you would have with stock gearing. 2 more teeth on the front or 6 less on the rear would likely be too much for your trike to pull without serious engine mods.

A couple other things to keep in mind…

- 1 tooth of change is equal to 3 teeth on the rear
- A smaller front sprocket will wear a chain out faster than a larger one
- Gearing ratios being equal a smaller front sprocket will help accelerate your bike faster (I don’t know why, but it does)
- When making gearing changes make sure your chain doesn’t end up rubbing on anything it shouldn’t

What size are your rear tires?

Stock gearing is 13/42, right now you are geared LOWER than stock. More Acceleration, Less Top Speed.
