Haven't started it in months and electric start is not connected. Go to kick it and I have to slowly press the kicker lever down several times before I feel it grab and am able to give it a real kick. What's broken and how hard of a fix is it? Thanks

ooo, try the search key. for 'sx kick start' and you'll get lots of info in one click.
It's not uncommon and the parts are avail.
No real special tools that I've heard about but MAY be a reverse thread nut involved
in the procedure.
It has oil in it right?
Can you run jumper cables directly to the starter to see if that works ok?

You need a new one way bearing located inside the centrifugal clutch. Not very hard to fix if you have the service manual.

Oof $90 from service honda. Trike is out in my backyard and with all the snow I have no way of getting a vehicle to it to try jumping. I don't have a manual. Take the side cover off and remove the clutch to get to that part?

I'm just gonna ask ,,, can questions be asked without using the search key first ?

I'm just gonna ask ,,, can questions be asked without using the search key first ?Yes, have no fear, ask away, however, in some cases, it is best to start a new thread if you have one.
I've never used the search tool and had good results. Heres how it works. If you type "250sx kick starter" the search feature finds threads that contain those words, but not necessarily in unison. If a thread says 250sx in it, but does not have anything to do with kick starters, then the search feature brings it up. Not helpful. It may also bring up a thread about kickstarters, but for a 350x instead of a 250sx. Still not helpful. Unless theres something you guys know that I dont.

Hello kilabeez0
Your prob is not necessarily your one way bearing. If the bearing is bad, the bike will often have a whirring noise for a few seconds after it is turned off. The bike will also often feel like it goes into neutral [no engine braking] when the throttle is closed.
To determine with certainty that your problem is not the kick starter I would do the following:
Remove the spark plug.
Remove the clutch cover.
Install the kick starter.
Wedge a screwdriver or rag between the clutch gear and crank gear from the top side.
Support the outside of the kick starter shaft so the case does not break.
Push down on the kick starter by hand with moderate force several times.
If it never slips the kick starter gears are likely good but the shaft can easily be removed for further inspection of the gears and spring etc. See owners manual section 8 and the oem fiche below.
The centrifugal clutch housing should also only turn one way by hand if the bearing is good.
Original manual, might take up to 7 minutes to load.

I guess I just read everything say, with 'no spark', even if it's not my machine.
Didn't know it was that sporadic.
