Transmission:

Im new to the site and I recently purchased a 1977 atc 90. High and low works and 1-3 works but i have no 4th gear. I though that maybe the clutch disks might need replacing at first but it doesn't even click into 4th. After 3rd gear i shift down once more and its like i go into neutral the engine revs freely and i go no were... am i right to assume that its probably not the clutch and something mechanical? Im pretty mechanically inclined but have never messed with one of these old Honda tyranny's so any input as to what i should look out for once i get inside the clutch side is much appreciated. Im getting a repair manual.

On a side note a guy i bought a mint 110 exhaust off today (for $35:p) told me sometimes these old machines gears get stuck when the oil isn't changed and it sits for a long time. Im not sure how much truth there is to this? but I haven't gotten around to changing the oil because ive been so busy with school and its black as night and was a little low. Im hoping this might resolve the problem and i can avoid opening it up if i dont need to because other then that not having a 4th it runs good.

Gaskets:

My 90 also has two small oil leaks. The first is from the hi-low transfer case. I know you can buy a proper gasket for the hi-low cover but my question is, will liquid gasket like some high temp silicon permatex stuff work just the same? or does it have to be a paper gasket? also the same question for the clutch side, can i use liquid gasket for the clutch cover?

The second slow oil leak is coming from the shaft the shifter moves (sorry i dont know the technical name). Id like to hear every ones thoughts on this as well. Is it possibly just a simple o-ring that needs replacing?

Thanks ahead of time for everybody's responses.

Well for your first question I have always heard that changing the oil can help. I would buy the proper gasket the silicon stuff just is to messy and when you need to change something its a pane. and for the oil leak you are probably right about the o ring dr atv will probably have all the parts you need. Oh and love on that 90 we love our 78.

Ill go ahead and try changing the oil before cracking anything open, it really needs it anyway. Im going to change the gasket eventually but want to take it out to a buddys ranch this weekend and ride it around. I don't mind the mess right now but do you think the liquid gasket stuff will hold up? Thanks! I plan on keeping my 77 for a long time.

What I would suggest instead is that you go buy some gasket material and make one using either the part or the old gasket as a template I make gasket all the time they are just as good as the originals if you do them right you will need a razer and posibly a punch set. It will take longer than a liquid gasket but the end result will be much better.
