Well I fired this up last week and drove it to the shop. Took about 10 kicks and ran great, pretty good as it has been sitting since July and it is still cold here. I rode it around in the snow for a little and into the shop it went, never to come back out the same again. It was all low speed riding as the rear shock is blown out as are the fronts, makes it a little bouncy.
What I am starting with is an 84 250r with a 300 kit, it runs great, shifts great, light works, and all electical is good to go. Has either a Sand Scorcher or Cobra full pipe on it, that i will be reusing most likely. I have most everthing I need for this build already, I need to get nicer footpegs, a chain slider, and maybe a better airbox, and a few other things I am finding wrong.
Some of you may remember when I got this, I traded a ratty 85 Tri-Z for it. I have not done anything with it until now.
Here are some pics from last year the day I got the 84R

Worked on this some more. I started taking it apart. Lots of stuff is bad, bent, cracked and rusted like usual I guess. I am going to have to use the 83 250R for some parts for now. These tripples are a mess. Front axle was seized in the hub. Only crack in the frame I found is the little seat latch bracket, that will be an easy weld. Gonna have to get some nicer foot pegs also. Can I use an 83 swing arm with all 84 suspension? My 83 one is all rebuilt. Also the revalved shock with the works spring is for the 83, might still use the spring. The headlight was missing the little spring retainers and had an interesting fix.
My wife said perfect ebay listing title would read - RARE, atc 250R headlight socks. There was also some news paper keeping everything tight, looks like they messed the headlight up in 89 by the old news papers.

Worked on this some more last night. Got the cracks all fixed on the frame and started working on the swing arm. 83-84 are differant, the link mounts are in differant places. My 84 carrier is junk and the rebuilt one in the 83 is not great, gonna have to order a new one for the 84. Got the 83 all stripped down to get some parts for now. Gonna just put it together with all the not so great parts for now. The 83 tripples are real nice and going to use the 83 forks as they have no rust and the lower legs are nice, the 84's are a little beat up and have rust on the tubes. The 84 also has an extra guesset in the front of the frame, gonna leave it alone. frame is ready to be cleaned and stripped now. My wife found 2 small cracks on the 84 swing arm I need to fix also. Got a parts 250R engine that had a real nice shift shaft, so that is apart and will go in the 84 300. With this being an old race trike it is kinda cool that the vin and engine #'s match yet. Here are some pics.

This is what I found when I removed the 84's axle carrier. It had been broke and welded up and then reshaped, what a mess.

Next up is the axles the 83 had this big beefy one stock width and the 84 had a for sure stock one. Is the one a NASA axle? They are a little differant by the sprocket hub but both fit the same.

coming along man! Hey I may be way wrong on this, but I feel like those low pro maier's belong to the 85/86 R. My bro in law has an 83 and used a 85/86 rear fender and the seat sits on the rear fenders just like that since he didnt cut the fenders to fit the seat. Just throwing that out there, i dont know if I have seen low pro's for an aircooler is why i ask. Looking good man, keep the progress coming! Dont toss those fenders out though lol

Your axle on the left looks like my nasa as far as the spline ends go and shape. Mine is an 81 version. The axle on the left in my pic is a nasa. Also if the castle nuts are flared and a little smaller than oem they are nasa. The one on the right is durablue.Disregard the circle and arrow its was for someone else. The gusset on the frame is a good addition a friend of mine had a 83 and his broke right there. My 83 has the old dull Mieres on the seat fits the same. 189579

The fenders are Maier low profile 83/84's. My Maier regular fenders for this the seat sits about the same on. I thought the one was a NASA by going off of adds in my mags. I will use that axle.

I bought a bunch of 1st gen 250R stuff this past weekend and got some of the little stuff I needed for this as well as a full 81 swinger set up for the 81 I am redoing right now, it had an 82 rear in it. I had to braze a few little rust holes on the seam, mud was left caked on for 30 years. The pipe was so full of oil I had to burn it out, guy always ran 20:1. Yea I am brazing with a cutting torch handle, with propane also, thats how I roll.
Here is the 81.

Over the last 2 days we got about 8 inchs of snow. I got the engine done tonight. Got the shift shaft changed. I also had to fix the drain plug, I went to take it out to drain the oil before removing the side cover and it was JB welded in. It had some real faint threads but not enough to tighten properly. Instead of the 12mm it now has a new 14 mm plug, turned out real nice. I also had a NOS heavy duty clutch kit with monster springs so that got put in. The springs are about 3/8 of an inch longer than stock and at least double the size of the coils. They are even bigger than like barnett HD springs. Hopefully it won't be to bad to pull the clutch. I like the feel of the HD springs I have them in some other trikes, just not this heavy of springs. Engine is all buttoned up and ready to get cleaned up for paint. I have a few pics of some of the other stuff also I will try and post them later.

With work and stuff it took me all day Saturday to get the engine ready for paint. Painted it late that night. looked really good when I got done, it is a ceramic high temp low gloss black paint. I got a few sleds yesterday in on trade I need to move around and then gonna get some done on this.
Engine is done, new HD clutch, new seals, new drain plug and retapped case, all the correct bolts, and a few other things. There are no blotches or hazy spots inbeteen the fins or any where else, just the way the camera reflects in the pics. it looks super nice.
I worked on the frame some more . The one frame tube was full of dirt, some how. I got that all out and then had a few pin holes and some more cracks to weld up. If the engine and frame #'s did not match i think I would have just tossed this frame and got a new one.
I meant to put this the other night and forgot, when I got the old paint and grime off the engine on the head it has stamped.

If any one knows what this could mean that would be great. I cleaned the letters out real good before painting, so they are easy to see now that it is all redone.

JUST saw this this morning! Where have I been looking lol. Awesome project bud. Love it. I knew the swingarms were different. I have not tried, but do not think there is anything about 83-84 Pro Link that will interchange. Honda actually did a LOT of work for 84. Fork internals were different but probably interchange? . Never quit learning do we! This is turning out great. I know you're having fun. I cannot begin to imagine having your wife help. That is SO cool . Business must have been good this winter? As far as I can tell between the 83-84 R's the carrier is the same and chain guide, and skid plate even though all mine are trashed. Everything for the pro link and shock are differant, not to say you could not make it work just not right. The 83 shock is much shorter, links are all differant, and the swingarm mounts are in a differant place between the two. My wife is a huge help, she loves trikes also, She has her 86 250SX, her 85 250 ES Big REd, her 81 250R, and a 83 200s that she grew up on. Her dad bought the 200s new and used it on their dairy farm. The only time the 200s was ever crashed she did it, when she was a kid. She was spinning around on a frozen lake and caught some cat tails and flipped it over, all that happend was the bars got bent and a broken lever. Her dad gave it to us years ago, it had sat in a shed since the late 80's.

Your paint job on the motor looks beautiful. What brand of paint is that? It laid on there so smooth based on the pictures. What did you do to prep the engine for paint? Did you paint fully assembled? Beautiful trike man and keep up the progress.

The paint is a ceramic based heat paint, I do not remember the name. lots of prep work, cleaning sanding and wire brushing. I stripped alot of the paint off before I assembled the engine. Lots easier to clean and prep before it is together. The last one I did I painted before assembly and nicked and scuff some stuff, hoping I can get it in the frame all together. I took the other 300 in and out of the 83 250R a few times to make sure I can do it. i might have to take the head back off. Hope not though.

Nice build!! It is very cool the wife helps by polishing parts that is tedious and time consuming as you know.
As far as putting the motor back in the frame, when I put my Ironhead Sportster together I laid the motor down on its side and worked the frame around it then stood it up. This technique worked great and I did not have to tape the cradle or otherwise with no nicks or scratches.

I have not been doing much on the frame as I need to get to town and get some more blasting sand. Our weather has been awful, cold and last night and yesterday we got another, 4-6 inches of snow. They are saying upper 30's today. Gonna try and get my NASA axel cleaned and polished today.

Me and my build are still alive.
Wow time flies, I had to put my own trike builds on hold for a little while and focuss on doing stuff to pay the bills. I did get the grab bars welded up last week. I bought a big blasting cabinet also, works nice for everthing but frames not quite big enough. I have been riding some, so thats a good thing.
Been getting some small stuff done for this. Finally got a perfect headlight shell also. Been so busy with work, my own stuff gets back shelved. I also got a new axle for this, it is a plus 2 or 4 it is 3 inches wider than stock so go figure. It is super beefy, makes the NASA look little and the factory one look like a toothpick. It is the same size from the center to the hub area pretty much. Uses giant castle nuts. Came with some old school big hubs, but I am going to run the 400 ex ones I have insted. That with the ex rims will put me about 9 inchs wider than stock.
Well I spent a good chunk of the other day working on this. I got the frame in primer. I had a mess, all the bare metal was rust and the paint was really chipped up, with alot of surface rust in every weld and angle. I sandblasted the entire thing down to bare metal, then scuffed it up for the finish to adhear. Looks nice. I may get up early and make it red, takes a few hours with the paint and clear. We have real low humidity right now so I need to take advantage of it. I will get some new pics up soon also.
I think my new axle may be a dura blue

I have about 8-10 hours in this frame alone, with drilling and cleaning out broke off bolts, fixing welds, re welding brackets and then all the sandblasting , prep and primering. I think it turned out real nice, it sure is shinny and red. Feels good to have this hurdle done. I will take some pics and get them up later. I should get my 85R frame done right away while I am at it. .

I figured I better make sure this trike was mine and went to get it registered today. Like most of my trikes I am the first registered owner. I figured that would be the case with this one as it was a race trike, and was never trail ridden. I went with a private reg. since this trike will not ever be trail rode, but wanted to get it in my name. With all the rare parts and time I will have in to it I can ride other ones on the trails. I will still ice race and maybe do some drags with it through. I did register my 85R for the trails today and that one the frame is not even done yet. the 85 was never registered either, so I am the first owner on that one as well.

Now all painted. The paint is the same color as the front and rear hubs. A little darker than OEM but I like it. Very heavy metallic just does not show up in pics well. These are all the pics I had on Photo bucket before my old pc crashed. Going to try and get some up to date pics soon. I got the headlight all done and it is perfect, even has OEM retaining springs. Been kinda looking for a lathe to do the swing arm bushings, since no one offers poly for the first and 2nd gen R's. have most all seat and fender parts and nuts and bolts cleaned up, but not refinished yet. I had a guy want to buy this the other day as it sits, but I really want to keep this one, at least for now. I want to have a display of all 3 gens of the R redone, I have every year with multiplies of some except and 86.

Well I got my chain slider and pivot bushing tis past week. The chain slider took lots of trimming and fitting to get perfect but It turned out nice. I will get some pics up soon. Yesterday my wife and I worked on this and got the swingarm in with all the shock stuff. Also got the Dura Blue plus 4 axle in it. I will need to get special bolts for the sprocket as the Dura blue does not use OEM bolts. I have been taking pics along the way just need to load them.

Well that is it for now. I plan on getting the back brake set up on but have to change the reservoir as the one I used seems not to seal tightly around the lid. I also am having an issue with the chain, I have a 14 tooth front and a 36 rear sprocket and ended up a half a link off on chain adjustment. Can not get the chain tight.

I got the chain on. I had a new OEM Honda 13 tooth front so that is what I used. Now the chain fits great. So I have 13 - 36 sprockets and 20 inch tires with the way this engine is built it made lots of low rpm power and held it. that's all I really did on it yesterday.

Yes DC super scoops, color is off but not as much as it looks in the pictures. They fit awful though, have like 4+ hours getting them to fit. Lots of heating and reshaping and a fair amount of trimming and still had to shim them away from the tank. No one else makes them so they are all you can find. The engine is amazing lots of work done to it top end and bottom.

This build came out good Pipeline. Looks like you got some of Mickey's fiberglass low pros on there (sorry, if you mentioned this I started picture skimming after first few pages), how do you like these fenders? What ever happened to the old Maier plastic low pros that came on the bike originally?
