I have a used and abused Fat Cat with no airbox and no muffler. Will this thing start without either or am I wasting my time?

I would say that it might start, but you are still wasting your time, because you don't wanna run a straight pipe anyway. And if you mean no air box with no pod filter either, then you really shouldn't start it anyway.
There are people that are less picky about that, but you really do need a muffler and an air filter for the bike to run correctly.

Starting the bike without a muffler is a great way to destroy an exhaust valve. Maybe you can cobble another muffler to fit just for starting purposes. And as Dohc mentioned, the engine is designed to run with a muffler AND an air filter.

uh oh ironchop, now youve gone and done it lol.....
plenty of machines out there running only velocity stacks and straight pipe, they can certainly be jetted to run good.
Harleys.
Race cars.
Neither one runs very long.......ooooooohhhhhh stand back lol
You know, 90% 0f all Harley Davidsons sold are still out on the road, broke down haahahahaha!!!
No im just being serious lol
"Fat Cat" might sound like a Harley model, but its not. Use a muffler and an air filter!!

I'm not running it like that, I'm just seeing if it might run without a rebuild. Maybe get it to bark a couple times and shut it down until restoration is done.
