I would also hang the tank so it is upright. This way the can can't drip on top of it which it probably will. You can also reduce the splattering some if you wipe the accumulated paint off the spray nozzle after each pass.

I guess the one the Ssgt didn't get from you when the scud alarm went off?
Love those stories on your deployment thread.

Thank you! No, it's not my mask from the army unfortunately. It's a navy mask that my buddy kept after his service.

Two things I recently realized. One is that this machine needs a new countershaft. I'd somehow completely forgotten about that until the day before yesterday. I slept on it, and I've decided I'll run this shaft for this year and change it out next year. I'm already getting things together, I just don't have time to split cases right now.

The other thing I realized is that if I have to wait for the weather to cooperate in order to do my final paint and clear coat, the bike is going to be done long before I could paint anything. I'm not leaving this halfway done for months waiting on weather. I started thinking about where I could bring my stuff to squirt it, and anyone I thought about would have just told me they'd squirt it the right way with paint guns. I've already dumped a lot of money into $50 cans of Honda spray paint and a $25 can of two part clear coat in a spray can, and I really prefer doing things myself. Last night I got an idea.

Looking good John, but overspray is a bit*h. Think of painting as sex, you want to cover-up, cuz some stuff doesn't wash off with soap and water :naughty:

I decided to make a spray booth, it was my best option I feel. I made this by myself in under an hour with zero items purchased, so it's pretty good for free. I was going to put the little space heater right inside the tent, but then I thought I might blow up, so I put it outside the tent blowing in through a pipe. I'll probably insulate that pipe a little better.

So it's not ideal but it was cheap and I'll be able to paint no matter what the weather is now!

How many cans of passion red (?) did you have in the frame shoot?

I ended up using three cans @ $19.95 a can shipped. Frames are kind of deceiving. I wasted alot in overspray just getting into all the corners and blind spots.

I'm much more comfortable and skilled with an HVLP sprayer, but I couldn't easily find that color in a quart size without custom mixing so I got the ColorRite cans

Two cans should do it I think. I have one on the frame now, but it obviously needs more coverage. I'm figuring the second can will finish the frame as well as cover the radiator guard. I realize this is an oil cooled bike, and behind the radiator guard is an oil cooler, but it's a Tecate part and on the Tecate it was a radiator guard. You can call it Ray, or you can call it Jay, but just remember, Glamy is gay*.

They were just under $20 per can, I just checked. I thought they were almost $50, but that's the Shasta White, not the red.

Neat idea on the spray booth, should save on some headaches dealing with weather. A small exhaust fan might keep things clearer in there and don't forget to wet the floor for dust abatement before you spray. It also helps the overspray from sticking to the concrete.

I don't remember if I said on here but after I had ordered my parts I found out my exhaust valves were lunched, so I ordered a set from Wiseco. That set me back a week.

This is why we lap valves. It's been probably 20 years since I rebuilt a four stroke, so I had almost forgotten. A guy on Thumper Talk reminded me, so then I ordered valve lapping compound as well as the lapping tool. That set me back another week, but I'm in no rush. These would not have seated correctly at all if I had forgotten to lap them in.

Guess which side is lapped?
