iv herd alot of people say that the 200s engine is better then the 200x engine when it comes to driveability and get up and go power. What engine drives the 200x beast best. 200x ,200s ,185s iv out ran a few quads in a 185s even with the balloons

I wouldn't really say this swap is done for performance reasons since for the track and trail the 200X manual engine is preferred by most..
The 185 & 200 series engines are common replacements for people wishing to create the AUTOX trike.
Simply take a 185 or 200 engine from any other chain driven model and install it in a 200X..this is done to get the auto-clutch and because when their 200X engine dies the 185/200 are still quick common and easy to find.

As far as bolt ins go, the largest and most powerful one I have is a 229cc manual clutch with reverse.
Don't think anyone else has one yet, at least I haven't seen it.

The gio 250cc 4 stroke engine with electric start bolts right up to the frame. Not the best but still a option.

People put in "S" engines for the auto clutch but for those that prefer a manual clutch the original engine is my personal preference.

Have you done this swap yet? I havent seen a gio bolted in yet but i just did a swap with a similar engine and it is not a direct bolt in, as the upper mount plates from the 200x will not work.
the gio is also actually a 233cc engine, even though they call it a 250.

What engine drives the 200x beast best. 200x ,200s ,185s iv out ran a few quads in a 185s even with the balloonsThe 200x.All three of these motors are great. As far as get up and go the 200s is last of the three. Then the185s, 200x being most powerful . I have a 83 auto x with a 185s motor and a 200x.In a few weeks I will run them against each other and see whats up.I can set them up to be exactly the same meaning tires and gearing. This is just my 2 cents.

Tires yes but gearing would be a challenge to match exactly, due to the trans gearing.
Its no secret that a good running 9.6:1 200x engine is going to beat a good running 8:1 200s engine that's the same bore and stroke. Every time.
If you want reliable Honda power, a 10:25:1 X engine is my favorite. Obviously this requires a new piston.

Speaking of the 10.25:1 engine, the stock motor was rated 18hp at the crank. What do you think the higher compression piston and overbore would yield? 1-2hp? Now that you've brought it up, I'm curious for that special build.

I personally have been thinking about doing a crazy swap like a 300 or 400ex motor. Has anyone ever done that?

That would be interesting but I don't know if it would fit. Sprocket alignment would worry me as well.

Slashfan yes more than likely you are in the ball bark, maybe 3. Results vary with tuning and it all depends on the parts you combine to take advantage of the extra compression. Obviously there are not many dyno results from trikes, especially not mild built, to compare.
Curtie, in my opinion neither of those engines are worth the trouble to swap.
The word 'crazy' is relative, and neither of those engines fit my definition.
If you want a sport trike with a 300cc plus engine Honda already built one better than you can. Its called a 350x.

X2 on the 350x. I love mine!

Yes the 350x engine is just badass for its time. One cam but 4 valves. Then of course next you will want to make that into a 500x. Now we're talkin!
But I still prefer the 200x. So many newer chinese engines will bolt right in, and let's face it, these 30 year old Honda engines, when the bottom ends go, they often cost more to fix than the trike is worth.
Curtie I think a more viable option would be a crf250 motor, i believe it makes more power than either engine you mentioned, although of course not a bolt in operation.

Ol' Duece installed a late 1970's era 175cc Honda 2-stroke dirt bike engine into a 1st gen 200x (if I recall correctly).
And I'm pretty sure member Mart from down under did a late (early 2000's) CR125 transplant into a 200x. I can't remember if that was a 1st or 2nd gen though.
Both of those builds are superbly done and rank top on my list of cool 200x conversions that I would love to do someday.

I think the one you are talking about was a second gen because I think I read up on that build somewhere but I'm not entirely sure.
