OK! Well i have jumped into the 70 game and have made arrangements to acquire a 140 equipped 70. So heres a thread detailing my next machine just because i like to post frequently for no real good reason. I have some big plans but for the next couple weeks until i get it in my hands this will just have pics of what the previous owner has done and how it looks before i get my mitts on it!
Bike is currently HoosierLoggers, we cut a deal on the machine as it sits and are trying to make arrangements to get the bike from Brazil IN to STL with the worst case being a TrikeFest Delivery.
The bike looked like this when he got it in 2011. Originally it had some damage to the frame from being bent and hammered on so he cut out a 5 3/4" section and replaced it with a 8 3/4" section to lengthen the frame out 3 inches total.

Greg put all new bearings throughout and picked up a new Lifan 140 motor. The oil cooler is mounted up under the tank above the engine. He cut out sleeves and made up some custom spacers that make the rear end set 4 3/4" wider than stock.

Bike in sun as it sits now. He has done other work to it i didn't mention but most of the major work was covered including a set of 110 foot pegs so a person my height is comfy on it. He painted the fenders and the frame etc with spray can. This winter i will rip the bike down completely and do a full powder coat and foot brake conversion among other things. for now i just want to get the bike and do the light stuff. Heres how she sits for right now

So thats how it sits right now. I am leaning towards a fiberglass tank and matching maiers front and rear in either Red or White.
I picked out this sweet Up-Pipe set up and aim to grab the Two Brothers canister with it http://www.hondaatc70.com/Pages/Exhaust.aspx
Going with a set of 7 1/4" tall Renthal Bars and extended brake line. They throttle and clutch lines are already long enough.
New Grab Bar, need to shop for one that i like with a flag holder.
Bike comes with Kenda Scorpions on it that I'm looking to replace with a set of Kenda Pathfinders, i really like the profile of those tires over most others. Cant stand the mini hole shots so many people run, they look like pizza cutters!!
Haven't decided if I'm doing wheels or not, probably just run them as is for summer and upgrade in the winter or have them powder coated to match the frame etc.
Need to pick up the regulator or whatever it is that allows you to run a light with one of the china motors as well as some LED set up. Haven't picked one out yet.
Last major item on my list to get together for summer is a pull lever! Going to see who can make one up to mock this guys set up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2d4dDdE3vYY
I want a pull lever instead of a kick start so theres no issues with fender clearance etc. And I'm not coughing out the cash for a pull start conversion lol. I am looking at some kind of creative way to bend a pull lever that can be taken off after the bike is started and clamped onto the side of the front forks. I think some round stock can be set up to clamp on somehow to the right side of the front fork or sit clamped on to the frame somewhere. after the bike is started so its not in the way. just kicking ideas around right now about something cool looking to stick it to the front forks, i think that would look cool as hell.
anyways thats my next project, buying 90% of the parts for it this coming friday and will probably end up bolting all the parts on in the parking lot at trikefest if the bike doesn't make its way over from Indiana before hand.

ya i just really like the foot print on the pathfinders over the scorpions. I may save some cash and just rock the scorpions this summer though.

Those are the pathfinders, don't they look freaking sweet?! I like the profile over the scorpions, just more aggressive looking and guessing since they are 2 ply they shouldn't be super heavy

Alright! Sourced a front fender for a great price today from my new Canadian friend Scott Stanley! I'm going to collect fenders and tanks until I find a set that matches what I want. Here's the fender, first part purchased for a bike I don't own yet LMFAO

I hope the cables are long enough for the new bars. I know 2 will be, but the brake cable will be iffy.
JasonB
05-11-2014, 10:16 AM
Greg, i was planning to pick up a longer brake cable. after looking at the pics the throttle and clutch cables appear to be long enough to stretch but ya the brake line looks questionable.
Looks like you have a good start there, Jason.
Thanks man, i went with this because it had the basics I absolutely had to have in a 70 platform; stretched frame, widened rear, and a 140 already installed. I can dress up the rest of the bike and make it my own now that the real work is already done.

If you take that kicker cut it about 1" above the bottom knuckle. Weld another small piece of steel to it to shim it out around 2 inches or so, it will clear the case, Then index it way forward almost to the footpeg you can kick it with fenders on it. I got a pic of mine somewhere on here???? There is a lot of movement in the kicker before it actually grabs the gear to engage. Hope that made sense....great looking build.......

05-11-2014, 01:23 PM
So are you saying weld it out to standout a bit and set it forwards so it would be a pull back type lever instead of a kick Lever? Please post up some pics of what you did, I'm interested in what options are out there! Greg is going to try and weld up a pull start lever like i posted, he's got access to welder and some round stock. I am pretty set on having a pull lever starter and setting it up to pull it off and stick it somewhere cool when not in use. we will see how that all works out lol. Thanks for compliments, I think Greg did great getting it to where its at i can't wait to dress it up with some new parts

Also not sure if I mentioned it but there are going to be a handfu of parts for sale. Front and rear fenders , plastic gas tank, handle bars, grab bar, big bore exhaust, and I think the tires are claimed be Greg at this point but I'm not sure about the wheels. Basically everything but the frame the engine and related electoronics and carb and cables.

05-11-2014, 07:40 PM
we can come to an agreement for sure, if you want the tires and pipe and anything we can def work something out. I am shopping for new wheels right now, might just go all new 7" wheels all around with those Kenda Pathfinders.

If you can get you hands on a stock pull start, the conversion is pretty simple.

http://www.hondaatc70.com/Pages/RecoilsPartsandKits.aspx
thanks Ben. Does it sound like everything needed to do the recoil conversion is listed right there from hondaatc70? 279$ 279 doesn't sound right for a billet side cover, pull start recoil, and grabber pieces for the fly…. That might be a better alternative than trying to put together a pull start lever.
jakep53
05-12-2014, 08:06 AM
I would definitely do the pull start conversion rather than the pull lever!!
JasonB
05-12-2014, 08:41 AM
ya i have been thinking about it. I heard the pull start conversion is hard to actually pull start with the larger chinese motors though... hmmm. IM debating, probably end up doing that.
EDIT**** ok i did some research on the pull start conversions and have come up with a few questions. It looks like hondaatc70.com offers a kit for 270$ that includes a new side case, the grabber cage, and a recoil for a trx90. I looked on DrATV.com (beatirce Cycle) and found their kit for what appears to be 114$ and includes just the grabber cage and a spacer plate but you use the chinese motors side case and your old 70 recoil. I would ask them questions directly about this but Beatrice Cycle wont answer their phones. Calling hondaatc70.com in 30 minutes when they open so i can pick their brains regarding their kit. I found a parts 70 bike close by that i might buy since it comes with rear fenders, good grab bar, 2 motors and a 2 recoils and a metal tank. SO if i can get clear answers about just buying a grabber cage and tapping the chinese motor's fly wheel and attaching that, using the 70 recoil, and the chinese motor side case, than i will go that route.

Alright arrangements have been made. I am driving out to effingham il Sunday to grab this thing and start wrenching on it. Had no idea Greg was only 3 hours away . Somehow we both assumed we lived a solid 6 hours from one another. Ordering up the parts I need to make this bike complete on Friday and I take delivery on Sunday, so should have some cool progress pics come mid to late next week. Now comes the fun part of explaining to the fiancé that I just bought yet another bike only two short weeks after the 86 350x was delivered hahahahah
Stay tuned for more entertainment

This is cheap and simple but some mods are needed to make it work. All you need is a stock 70 cover, recoil and cage that goes on the fly wheel. The cover need to be cut out so that it clears the pick up coil. I welded a piece of flat stock back on to the cover so that it will seal. When I got it it just had a piece of a dr.pepper can siliconed in there. next the center of the flywheel needs to be turned down to fit the I.D of the cage and then a couple tacks with a tig. That's about it. The top cover is the one being used, the bottom is one I have started to cut out but haven't finished. I figured this was a good time to plant the seed for a front brake too LOL. I will get some better pics and pics of it installed later tonight.
JasonB
05-13-2014, 04:26 PM
got any shots of the fly after you turned it down but before the grabber cage was welded on? hondaatc70.com only says you drill and tap the fly to hold the cage, dratv.com has it on their site like you did it; turn the fly wheel face down and weld the cage on in two spots. Thanks for posting that info! And brakes are just extra weight, who needs safety equipment anyways lol
stoshu
05-13-2014, 04:58 PM
The $279 kit from Spanglers you only have to drill and tap. Much easier to buy the more expensive kit and it's a simple drill, tap, bolt on. I've done both from there, but grinding, welding, and sealing the stock case takes time. Spend the extra money and you get stronger recoil as well. People say its hard to start the bigger motors, but its actually easier than most 185 or 200s. You're not a small guy, you will have no problems.

The hardest part about the transaction on Sunday will be remembering to leave my pistol at home when I leave for Illinois.
lmao. Sounding like i may be leaving empty handed when you put it like that. I need to find a recoil and the 70 side cover. Ben is going to weld up a cage and turn down a fly wheel for me i just need to measure out the clearance inside the case so Ben knows how much to trim off the flywheel. Looking at my options now, i found a sweet deal on a 70 with 2 motors for cheap nearby but the seller wont respond so back to square one looking for the parts i mentioned above. may just end up with a 70 side case and the adapter plate with brand new trx90 recoil for 115$ so i avoid spending 100$ on a beat up 70 recoil that may need rebuild. Still checking my options here

ok looks like Greg's bringing me a 70 and an extra motor with the related parts to run a 70 recoil on it. I got a feeling that come friday spending is about to get out of hand REAL QUICK when i get paid lol.
the fiancé found out about my intentions on purchasing another bike lol. Somehow she noticed me 'liking' and following too much 70 related stuff on Facebook hahahaha oh well. She started asking when i was going to buy a 70 and i broke the bad news to her. just need to find someone to ride out to Effingham to pick it up with me since theres no way in hell i will be able to get it in and out of the truck with my busted ankle.
bunch of random stuff showed up for the 350x; Fast Trekkers for the rear and a set of 10" wheels, and a new front Duro Hook Up tire. Waiting on a 10" front wheel from Honnerlaw. Ordering up inverts for the 350x bike Friday as well as related brake hardware and fork guards. Too many projects at once!

05-15-2014, 05:13 AM
Well, how did she take the news?
JasonB
05-15-2014, 04:09 PM
its was kinda the same response as when i broke the 350x news. Just more of a 'why do you need another bike' and she was a little upset i hadnt brought up that i was eye balling this bike over a month ago. She doesnt care about how i spend my money as long as the bills are paid. She doesnt fully grasp the difference in bikes either, i mean come on. I need a 2 stroke sport bike. And a hybrid monster 2 stroke sport bike. and a 4 stroke sport bike. and a mini bike with a monster motor in it. its hard trying to explain the need to fill every square inch of usable space in the garage with bikes i can only ride one at a time hahahahahah. Even the 'what if i go on a trip and one breaks down, thats why i have to take all of them!!!!' mentality doesnt make sense to her. She's my angel!
OK so I found a nice metal tank, fresh paint 120 shipped no rust ready for decals. Got with Ludwick over at Sterdy and am picking up a set of their 7 inch polished wheels and cheng shins. Ordering the up-pipe exhaust tomorrow along with some tank decals, grab bar, number plate, bars and cables, and a skid plate, and a new set of 3" billet hub spacers so there is absolutely no wobble to the widened stance and fresh wheels. That should do me for this bike completely. This 70 project is MUCH cheaper simplistic compared to the other builds i have going on. And cheaper HAHAHAH. Seriously I will have the bike just like i want it and have less than 1K in the extra parts i want for the bike to make it look and perform like i imagine it should. I dont think im going to do a rear fender for now, just rock it with the parts i listed above until i come across a decent used condition rear red fender. Plus Ben Meyer is hooking me up with the flywheel work for the pull start conversion items like a God Damned champion. So it will have pull start. Cant wait to grab this sunday and start screwing with it!

hey thanks man! I feel pretty obnoxious making posts/threads like these but i really enjoy seeing other people's builds so i figure there are other people out there that might enjoy my build threads! What part of MO are you in?
Just got off the phone with Hondaatc70.com; ordered up a fuel filter, 1' of 5mm fuel line, a gas cap, reproduction black number plate, their big bar kit (7.25" tall bar in black, black lever, extended throttle and brake line), and their chinese up pipe muffler system. 402.50 shipped for that order
Spent $355 at SterdyProducts for a set of their 7" wheels and cute little cheng shins. After staring at 100's of pics of 70's online i have jumped all over on what tires i wanted. i attached a pic of a bike i cant stop looking at, its pretty much what i envision my bike resembling. I like the way the tires look on it 193645 Hes got Carlisles but i think the cheng shins should look similar.
Jumped on Ebay and ordered up: red skid plate, some 3" billet hub spacers, and a black slick looking grab bar.
Found a guy in TX that pm'd me from the planetmini boards; he has a nice looking freshly painted red 70 metal tank for 120$ shipped. I sent him money through moneyGram just now, feeling like i probably wont see that cash or tank after i paid hahahahah. Never used moneygram, sites a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro rip off in terms of fees but the guy doesnt have paypal so i took a gamble on it and rolled the dice since the tank looks pretty slick and rust free.
Headed out to meet up Greg at 6pm tomorrow night in Effingham for my new bike, cant wait to start wrenching on it!

05-16-2014, 03:45 PM
lmao ya i guess i did get a little to loose with my purchases :D that should really be all i need for this bike though, the last parts im eyeballing included head light mounts, the rectifier or whatever that part is that facilitates the use of a light, and some kind or either old school ATC head light assembly or LED set up. That should be IT! If it works out like that than this will be my fastest build yet hahahahhaha

Man I love seeing other people's builds, goin from what they started with to the end result and all the different ideas. Can't get enough of it lol. I've always got bikes and just rode them and rebuilt the motor when needed, pretty soon its time for me to BUILD one on my own.
I live about 45 minutes south east of k.c. down by Truman lake
"Next up: Inverts, Daytona Anima FDX190 4v, Full custom chromoly mini-350X chassis, aluminum tank, custom Fullbore mini-R flat track fenders and super scoops, aluminum sub-frame, arched 4-over mini-450R swingarm, dual piston wave rotor disks brakes front and rear, hydraulic clutch, and nitrous with a turbo kit to top it all off!"
Lmao just given ya ideas ;D

That's about $900 in one post Jason......still feeling confident on that "less than a thousand in extra parts" :D
Sounds like its gonna be awesome!!
I personally can never stay below a grand on any builds I do. I just spent $135 on paint for mine and I still have to paint it.

Alright got her unloaded and tore into this heap. Lots of little stuff that needs attention to fit how I want her to look. Looks like the manifold is missing a chunk and that's why the oring was forcing out through the missing section . Need to jimmy rig that up with something. Took carb apart it looks clean just need to go get some carb cleaner to spray it out. Stripped the white paint off the rear fenders and cut them down to my liking. Swapped the front fender out with the red one Scott Stanley shipped me. Waiting on all the new parts to show up this week before I can do much else. My good buddy Kyle has a side case for me for the recoil conversion too. After much thought I'm going with the trx90 new recoil and adapter plate and grabber cage for 115$. I think it's a wise choice given how crappy the 70 recoils all are and how damn much money people want for them.

thats what i was going through, i have been watching craigslist for 2 weeks now and i got fed up and made a post 'WTB 70 stuff' and had two people email me right away! One has a complte 70 with working motor for 200 and was going to throw a non working trx70 in with the deal for a total of 400 for both. Said the plastics are in good shape. The other guy that emailed me has 70 plastics front and rear for 20$ just 40 minutes from me. And this build will be wrapped up by the end of the weekend if all my parts get here! Or atleast 90% of it. The only other stuff I havent ordered up or sourced would be a better condition seat. Otherwise its all in the mail or in the hands of a craigslist stranger i need to arrange a meet up with this weekend

OK i just impulse bought a new seat on ebay lmao. I COULDNT HELP IT, those seats are sweet! Complete seat with pan and foam and cover for around 140 shipped. I will grab the fender sets this week and probably pick up that pair of trx/atc from the guy for 400 and flip the trx70 with the atc 70 motor in it for what i pay for the pair.

nice, he was trying to sell me that 125 for like 400 bucks since it was 'unfinished' about 2 weeks ago. i circled back for my brother in law that was interested in it and tyler said he had a buyer lol glad you're happy with it ! Ya post the ad, its funny how many people are out there with this stuff that arent listing it but still trolling craigslist
Jason,, one thing with that skid plate: Youre going to have trouble getting the exhaust to fit through the opening and the oil drian bolt head isnt going to line up with the hole in the skid plate. Or at least thats what i ran into

I was RIPPED OFF by someone that pm'd me on the planetmini's forum. Pat Ramirez < patrkramirez481@gmail.com > scammed me out of 120 plus 15 for money gram fees. I never use anything besides paypal and this scum convinced me their paypal was having issues and sent me legit pics of a 70 tank. I sent money last friday and it didnt occur to me until last night that i hadnt heard from this POS since monday when they said they'd ship my tank out. Googled the email addy and it comes up as a scammer on another website. Watch out guys, hopefully this pops up in a google search when the next poor buyer gets an email from this piece of trash looking to steal their hard earned money. watch out guys! pat dan ramirez whatever your name is, ROT IN HELL YOU PIECE OF HUMAN TRASH
On a better note I bought a 200$ local atc70 today and plan to split it w my brother in law and grab the tank fenders and other junk from.

thanks guys, sucks but it happens. Karma is a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro! the 70 i split with my brother in law made its way into my garage friday night. Finally got around to tearing it apart yesterday, i grabbed some major parts i wanted like extra wheels, bar pad, semi mint rear fenders, an extra seat to sell, and a round 90 style headlight with brackets, and the rustiest tank i have seen in my life! I found a website that details reust removal; going to buy 2 gallons of vinegar and ad 3 cups of salt total and just keep filling and rinsing the tank for 5 days to clean it up. I had plans to wrench on my 70 yesterday but my brother in law came by and needed my help getting his 125 semi auto Viva motor running in his 70. I expect my package from Spangler (hondaatc70.com) to show up today with tall bars, TRX90 recoil and adapter kit, up pipe exhaust, front number plate, and other random goodies. I should have some real progress tonight since my fiance teaches TurboKick and pole dancing classes until 930pm so i get some quality 'me time' to dick around with distractions like these lol

actually was eyeballing the foot brakes this morning! 140$ for the conversion seems like a solid idea. I will probably order it up tomorrow when i get paid. as of now its still hand brake operated but i dont trust myself to reach for a handbrake in the event of an emergency stop lol.

Rob do you have stock tires or do you run the go cart slicks like the rest of the flat tracker nuts do? man those bikes look bad on some hoosier or other flat track/slick go cart tires!
I am going to order up the foot brake kit tomorrow probably. My brother in law is coming by tonight and we are going to put a list together, he needs a battery box from Spanglers and some other stuff so i have to wait on my order so we save on shipping. Cant wait to get this thing up and running!

Are you going to turn that carb around ?. I just put a 110 with the electric starter that sits on top of the tranny in one of my 70's. The backwards carb bugged the crap out of me, ruined the look of the whole project. I was able to fab up an intake that made the carb point in the right direction and clear everything without much trouble at all useing peices cut out of some spare intakes I had laying around.
Also for the rust removal. The best way I have found for the tank is the cheap "Works" toilet bowl cleaner that you get at Wall mart.

yai dont have a welder or i might attempt it. it will be fine for now, i may mess with it in the future but as is works. Im still torn over the tank to steering kneck gap, really hurts the bikes look with a gap like that where you just see the back bone of the frame since this one is stretched. i need to look at more pics of strectched ones, or acquire a longer tank like the raffle trike Louis built to cover the gap

So got the side case installed and it starts but it revs to the moon. The slide is dropped all the way down except for about 10% open, not sure what's up but will tear into it tomorrow

Fenders aren't sitting down all the way, and the tank on it is the plastic one. The metal one is going be derusted this next week. I need to check the alignment of the side case because it seemed to be chattering against the recoil for the couple seconds the motor ran before we shut it off; pull started and it reved to the moon and the recoil was making noise like it was catching. More little stuff to mess with. And the shifter needs a few MM's shaved off it to clear the recoil housing for normal shifting. Otherwise it may actually be safely ridable tomorrow!

Thanks dude! It's got some custom spacers on it now, but I have a set from eBay that will give it the same stance that are billet and about 70$ shipped . Wheels are from spanglers, xowner will be selling sets soon hopefully for much cheaper than I paid for these. I'm happy w the look!
I re did the recoil grabber cage and and after getting it back together yesterday the bike has no spark. I need to disconnect the kill switch and see if that changes anything. I bought a new plug and oil to change it out, thought I fouled the plug but after changing plugs and checking to see if it was throwing spark to a ground there's nothing. Fun fun. Unplugging kill switch and checking later today for spark

I spend more time on my ATC 70's then I do on my Quads. They are a real kick in the pants.

Your 70 build is looking AWESOME. Once you derust your tank are you going to use some kind of tank sealer. If so, what brand.

thanks! I am just going to keep it filled with gas to keep the rust out, i heard mixed reviews on the tank sealer coming out and clogging carbs etc.
last night i jumped on ebay and bought a few things. Ordered up a new "racing CDI and ignition coil" , a new stator and a new kill switch. Bike has no spark, result? BUY ALL NEW EVERYTHING lol. Not even about to start screwing with this, just replace main components since it cost about 40$ for everything lol. Plus the ignition box is supposed to up the rev limit from what another pit bike enthusiast tells me. why not rev this poor little motor to hell and back :D

Holy crap that bike is insane! Seriously amazing build, it's hard to compete with lol. Makes me want a fully suspended 70 project in the future, I think a nice set of inverts or even conventional forks would be a sweet upgrade for these 70 set ups. Damn that's a nice build thread he's got there!

hey thanks for askin! its getting there, about to head home from work and mess with the stator. the pick up and flywheel are practically touching, cant figure out why. fly and stator are both new but they are identical to the old set! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/sleepin-mr2/MAS%20CACA/09FA1955-5E62-49FD-9E13-D576164571DB_zpse03jwgnt.jpg (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/sleepin-mr2/media/MAS%20CACA/09FA1955-5E62-49FD-9E13-D576164571DB_zpse03jwgnt.jpg.html)

Bring them anyway, you won't be the only one wrenching there. I just finished rebuilding the motor on my 200x that I swamped at the badlands when you guys all came over. Talk about last minute. I dropped the cylinder off and ordered the gasket kit, piston and rings Friday.
