So I had this idea. It's getting nicer out, i can work on the bikes, new goverent decent paying job, and I wanna dabble in the local race scene. I'm gonna work with what I got, my 225 is already pepped up so I figured let's go even farther. I was wondering if anyone has any of these old school performance parts and what's it like on a 225. Share some stories. I never knew they raced these really, seems to me a suspension upgrade and wheel spacers is pretty much needed. I try doing little jumps and only weigh 130lbs and I bottom it out soooo easy. I break stuff every time I try to jump it, I need to stop.

I actually have all 3 sets of these tires, should I mount any of these for the track? I got the ones on the right on stock rims, but I don't wanna switch back to stock hubs to test them out. How do they perform?

barnett468

hello;

the tire selection depends on tje track. for most tracks the knobbys are beter, they have a flatter profile and are smaller diameter so they will tend to roll less [be less tippy] in the turns. run high pressure at first,. it will slide easier reducing the chance of a high side.

engine mods are easy.

if you want the suspension to be stiffer on a budget, one option is to put some heavier oil than stock in the forks like around 15w to a max of 20w. run the level 1/2" - 5/8" higher than stock. install air caps and run some air in the forks to compensate for the soft springs. if your seals leak, the air will leak put.

I eventually plan on doing the tri-z front end conversion. Seems kinda simple from my reading here. It's the rear end that's the problem. Which there is not many options for improvements being it's shaft drive. I'm no fabricator. I have seen the front stock ones converted to air shocks though. Might be a cheaper alternative.

From bottoming out I cracked a air box already and damaged the battery holder. :)
(If anyone has a air box for sale i will need one. If not it's off to eBay. )

do not remove the springs and run air only

DohcBikes

The rear shock sucks.

Take as much weight off of the bike as possible.

Tri-z frontend, t-wolf 250 swingarm with a longer travel remote or piggyback reservoir shock in the rear

Wiseco makes high compression pistons, also a Yamaha XT225 piston will up the compression, only certain years are correct.

I have an extra air box for it but the top mount tab is broken, as most of them are. Repairable though.

If I don't find one I'll let you know. The tab on mine was broke allowing it to slightly hang lower and to the left and made it hit off the swinger causing it to crack. So I'm looking for a unbroken one.

last ytm225 i built had web 49a.raptor 250 +1 intake.r/d valve springs,full dg exhaust,hc piston,timberwolf carb.port/polish head.its pretty much a animal for what it is.

Lookin through the parts fiche on partzilla I found out that a tt225 dirt bike in 86-87 used the same head. So the intake and carb should work. 32mm on the carb is what I believe it is but im not sure. It probably wouldn't connect to the airbox but could use a pod filter though. That's what im looking into for my 250 timberwolf engine swap I did on my dx

t-wolf 250 swingarm with a longer travel
.

so, the T-Wolf swing arm is the same as the DX but physically longer?

yes I measured mine just recently but I can't remember the length difference...

Trike_crazy
05-12-2014, 08:36 AM
Yes, the timberwolf swingrm bolts right in.The timberwolf swingarm is about 2 1/2 inches longer then the DX swingarm. You have to use a longer shock or fab a new/ longer mount. Thats what i did to my dx a few weeks ago

heres a link http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/167201-Using-quads-for-parts-because-I-can!

DohcBikes

If you only make the mount longer, you won't gain any performance from the suspension, in fact the the longer swingarm introduces extra leverage to the stock DX shock and will likely reduce overall performance.

There are several shocks that have more travel, more adjustability and will bolt in as option. Just measure the bushing width and eye diameter on each end, and do some cross referencing.

I actually saw a timberwolf sitting on the side of the road down the street from me today. Thought it was another dx at first until I saw the training wheel.

But so far I'm thinking tri-z front end. I'll take the suggestion and look for a better shock (any particular things to look for or to stay away from?), should I invest in a proper pod filter or put an air box back on? Both will be about the same cost. I'm going to look for some 4x115 spacers and mount some better tires on my ITP rims. I found a NOS twist throttle but I don't know if I wanna spend the cash for it.

As far as top end upgrades I am inexperienced with any of that. But I am sure it's not too difficult with a manual. It's already bored out but to what exactly, I'm not sure. It's had work done to it but again, I don't know exactly without talking it apart.

Another question, I know different pipes perform differently, what are DG pipes good for? That's what I got, don't know if I want to switch it.

can the tri z rear shock be used? Hmmmm.... your wheels are 4 x 115 bolt pattern, what are the hubs from?
I just got some blaster hubs and wheels, they were 4x100 I guess its the same as the tri Z... I was hoping to find the gold wheels to match my front but I had to get what I got cause the price was right and the tires on them were in great shape.
Now I need an engine with reverse, that would make this thing so much more useful and fun, I can back up after plowing into a wood pile cause I couldn't make a turn! lol

No clue, I could take pictures if you like. As far as reverse, I have seen my fair share of dx's and own a couple myself but I have never seen a dr around me. I have never owned a machine with reverse, but one day I shall. That's my goal. It'll probably be an es or sx. I get tired of dealing with these yamahas, I don't want another one lol.

Hey ghost, do you have a picture of how you dg muffler is mounted up? Mine seems like it is mounted way high and the mudflap is touching the exhaust. If you do end up finding a timberwolf you can get reverse that way.

Mine is the same way, both mudflaps were removed.
This is an old pic before i started working on it.

Ghost I think your cutout was unnecessary (other than it kinda looks cool:-) ) but yes the mud flaps will touch the pipe if they are installed

The new owner of my last DX sent me this pic but you can see the flap rests on the DG.

In my opinion the DG made more power throughout the RPM band once I jetted it.

That was from the previous owner. I have like 3 more sets of fenders, so it's no big deal to me.

But what should I go with, air box or pod filter? And if I get a pod filter which style should I get?

barnett468

But what should I go with, air box or pod filter? And if I get a pod filter which style should I get?It depends what you want to do. A decent air box will give you slightly more hp and keep your filter much cleaner much longer.

If you use a pod, I would probably just use an old school Uni Pod.

Some claim that vegetable based filter oil "breathes better" than the std filter oils...I dunno about that cuz I use it for different things. I guess you could get some free from behind Colonel Sanders but you might have to fight the diesel and flex fuel car guys for it.

First they take our feathers for their pillows and now they want our oil...run Harry run.

I called a local atv store to price their pod filters, they ask what 4 wheeler is it for, i say well actually its a 3 wheeler. At that point i felt like everything he tried to say just came out like derrrrr i dont knowww? He tries explaining to me that i should use the original air filter it came with and all this other crap and explains to me if i use one that lets in too much air itll bog out and just a bunch of useless information i dont need to know. I just want to know if they had a pod filter that will clamp onto my carb. So i eventually just said the timberwolf uses basically the same engine and that he will look for one for that and call me back. No idea if its the same but its the first thing that came to my mind.

I already have a pod filter on it but its crappy. I dont even want to run it really with it. I dont want to buy an air box to just drill holes in it to let it breathe more. Thats what they did for these upgrades in the pictures above. If i get an airbox its staying watertight.

Uni replacement for original 225 DX filter.

1983-86Tri Moto 225 DXNU-2265ST24.95

The link below is to the Uni Pod filters. If you can operate and read a tape measure, you can find the one that is best suited to your bike. Keep in mind that you might need one with an angle on it. Do not buy the green ones listed at the top. f it hits your frame anywhere by 1/4" or less, it is not a problem.

I actually bought a moose replacement one that is like the OEM one but I used it once and cracked the air box so it's been sitting around.

I'll go out and measure what needs to be measured and see which one I want to buy.
I'm thinking of getting the dual layer red ones. Unless the black one above it would be better.

Is it worth it to buy the filter cleaner? I already have the air filter oil.

I'm thinking of getting the dual layer red ones. Unless the black one above it would be better.I like the dual filter ones, they keep the inner filter cleaner, plus the red material is more porous then the black material and is removable, so both these things make it easier to clean.

Is it worth it to buy the filter cleaner? I already have the air filter oil.I'm sure it works fine but that's too fancy for me. I just clean them in solvent or use gas if need be. Then I stand them on end for 20 minutes in the neighbors yard then wring them out again. Then I oil them and either slap them on or stand them up and wring them out again depending on how long I will be running it.

The only thing I can add about running pod filters is the reason it would bog is from it not being jetted correctly from all of the extra airflow. So whatever you end up doing remember to check your spark plug and listen for detonation. You dont want to burn up a piston from something as simple as a jet change

Well i measured the carb and its 1" 1/2, no way a 4" long filter will fit so i ordered the angled one, hopefully it fits. For future reference the part number is UP-4152AST incase anyone needs it.

Thanks barnett, your descriptive pictures really helped.

Ill take a picture of how it fits when it gets here.

Another option is to use the tube that leads to the air box as a plenum, it gets the air cleaner out into some space.

A straight uni sponge pod does work alone, it just sits a little cockeyed in there against the frame.

You can also put some bailing wire on it to pull it up a little if need be. not too pretty but sometimes function must come before beauty.

Thanks barnett, your descriptive pictures really helped. You're very welcome, glad you found something. I like pictures too.

Thanks but so do I lol. I've been stashing parts along with a complete parts bike. I actually plan on keeping this one and letting my brother use it when I eventually buy a 250r/tecate/tri-z. Only thing I didn't have was a air box because I took that off the parts bike and I broke it jumping the bike but I just ordered the pod filter.
