I picked this up the other day for my wife, it was basically left for dead. It's overall condition is good.

I did a really thorough carb clean on it, before I re installed it I noticed that when I pull the choke leaver it does not do anything to the "butter fly valve" (lack of proper term) the cable itself does move and the little needle moves in and out. So how does the choke work? I'm thinking it's works off some kind of vacuum and i did something wrong or that the "butter fly valve" works off of some kind of temp sensor.

The "butterfly valve" does move freely With my finger, and it returns to fully closed when I release it. With the older machines I'm used to that would be choke on fully and it is connected directly the the choke leaver via choke cable.

To make this simple is it and auto choke or do I have an issue?

Your choke is actually a plunger, with a black plastic 14 mm nut. The butterfly is your throttle. There is also a vacuum slide for your throttle. Which will only work while running. Your choke WILL be stuck in the bore of the carb. You will need to carefully remove the cable,,ok,back up. Loosen the 14 mm plastic nut. At this point. The choke SHOULD simply pull out . It's not going to :(. Now, spray your favorite eater in there. PB Blaster, rust rite,wd 40,whatever. Try and turn the plunger however you can. I inevitably end up pulling the cable up out of the plunger. Which is NOT how this is designed to work. But how I do it. Our end goal here is. To pull that plunger up out of the carb with a good pair of needle nose pliers. Then clean the bore of the carb and clean/replace the plunger. Now you can VERY gingerly work the plunger with a screwdriver. Applying heat to the body has worked for some here. However there is a o ring on this plunger! So,it's a crap shoot. I've been doing this 27+ years. But lately some here have caught up to me with better/fresher ideas. Shortline/FlyingW. Search their posts. And if nothing else. GO LOOK at a Honda diagram to SEE what you are dealing with . You will get it,but it is a very touchy situation. You do NOT want to break an ear off the plunger. If you do,they are sold new as a kit. Spring etc comes with them. The last I knew, your choke cable was like $11 brand new from Honda. I suggest that or cleaning /lubing yours. There was an update on the cables making them more water proof. The water tended to get down the Rancher/Rubicon/Foreman lineup in the early 2000's. Good luck

Ok thank you, it makes more sense now, the choke does function properly I just thought it should activate the butterfly valve for some reason.

So when I give it throttle the butter fly valves moves accordingly to the throttle output?

The butterfly moves with your throttle cable. Sorry I just typed that book, for you and me lol!

Thank you I realize my little book could have been a lot shorter as well but we got to the bottom of it, just took the long way.

Techincely it's not a "choke" it's an enrichener. It let's more gas in when you move the "choke" lever instead of "choking" off the air supply with a butterfly. Either way, it's the same result in the end.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up, I like to know things like that
