so I had seen this for a couple of months now and just finally found out who owned it, to my surprise it is a 4th cousin and he had no plans to repair it so for 50$ I just brought home my first honda 250SX now for the parts I know I need a driverside foot peg and a seat pan are super high on the list as both are missing. also need an air filter box and filter setup. let me know what you guys think and if anyone has the parts I am missing.

LMAO I figured since it was family I could atleast give him 50 lol shoot two falls ago I got a 185, a 90, a 110, and a 125m plus my pop up camper free from a local farmer so to heck with the 20$ trikes bring on more free ones.

well after doing some testing I have no spark, going to get a manual and start diagnosing it soon, my big question is if the keyed ignition isn't there will it run I know later model atv's need ground to run so does a 1985 sx need ground?

if the keyed ignition isn't there will it run Ahhhem...yes... (i may have fractured a law or two in my time:D)....
Just kidding again..
Depends on how you wire it. Yes, it can be wired to run without the key.

There's a three terminal connector by the head light- it is red black and green. Jump out the red and black, that is the ignition switch

Looks like you got a rear rack with it, that is worth the $50 by it's self. Killer deal!!

only real issue other than the minor things with electrical is that it is trapped in reverse, I have tried the the reverse switch and it sounds like it is shifting out but it's not. Guess I am going to have to take the cover off and give it a real good look in there, might as well remove both sides and see all of it to know for sure. I usually sell all the Honda's that I get, but I think I might keep this one as a companion trail rider to my 225 dx. I will probably street legal it as well as it will be a better choice than my tri-z for cruising around town with.

I had a similar issue with a 250es I bought, and regrettably, resold. It was stuck in 5th, and the shifter moved as it should. I took the stator cover off to find that the shift shaft was bad. There is a weird pawl with spring on it that engages the shift drum. That pawl had cracked and spread apart, thus not allowing the shifter to throw the shift drum fully to change gears. You may find that you have the same issue. Also, the shift shaft from the TRX300 is that same. I hair longer if I remember right. Good luck, bud.

well after some testing and rewiring to a 5 pin Chinese cdi I now have spark. want to send out a thanks to kb0nly for his thread that gave me the info I needed for this. I am still needing a left foot peg, have one I am watching on ebay but if there is any member out there wanting to sell one hit me up. other items include air box with hoses and filter and keyed ignition. may be more once I pull the stator cover off and look into the shifter pawl.

new update I got it untrapped from reverse put my 225dx fuel tank on top . And looking through the cleanest sat for the last 10 years carb, she fired right up. no smoke out the exhaust or excessive top end noise. doesn't want to shift into gear very well but will deal with that soon right now I am working on a friend 1983 kawasaki CSX 750 street bike. After that I havfe some more laptop work, but I am going to fit this machine in there as I think it will be a good one to have out camping.

yep have an update just had the stator cover off today and repaired the shift drum stopper and shift shaft stopper, and now I only have sl gear and what seems to be that and in between 1st, I am starting to think I have a bad shift fork or two in there. It was trapped in reverse when I got it, and with rocking it hard I finally managed to get it out of reverse before I ever started it, but now I have only the one gear, SL. idles and starts great just no lights but have good bulbs and no electric start but when jumped the starter cranks. I fear I am going to have to split the cases and take a long look at the tranny. I have found a plastic fuel tank, but still on the lookout for a seat and a air filter box. This motor runs too good to part this out, and the frame and plastics are in really good condition, I will need new tires in the next year but right now they are holding air perfectly, with the help of a little fix a flat "2 cans worth lol" included are some vids of it running

I think I've got a seat for you. It's not perfect, it's got duct tape over some cracks. Let me check tomorrow and I'll send you a pic.

that sounds great, I can make a new cover and with my plastic welder I can repair any and all cracks in the pan.
