Hey guys I have a 95 enduro/dual sport that starts up great and then dies after about 15 seconds. I took the carb off last night and cleaned it real good. It was pretty gummed up but I got it cleaned real good. The only thing I was questionable on was the needle that moved up and down with the float. It did not seem like it was moving very far (1/16" to MAYBE 1/8"). I put it all back together and it did the same exact thing. Am I missing something stupid here? What could be the culprit? The fuel petcock also has reserve, prime, and on; which one should I be on when starting? Thanks for the help guys. I have put a link to the carb if anyone wants to reference it. I appreciate the help!!

Sounds like either yer floats sticking, or you maybe have a plugged screen in the line or the tank???? Tank vent not breathing????

Those primer type petcocks are famous for gas flow issues . I suggest replacing it with a reg petcock and plugging up the vacuum hose .

Thanks for the responses guys. I really hadn't thought about the screen/filter issue. Not sure where those are on this bike either. I will have to research the tank vent. That seems like the most likely to be what's going on.
On this carb, doesn't it need the vacuum tho?

Yer carb should be creating the vaccum to turn on the fuel supply. Try running it til it dies, the popping the gas cap.....Vent issue will sound like a beer can opening. Look through the filler to the inside of the fuel valve....think theres a screen there. May be a screen in the fuel valve to....Im not sure bout that.

I will deft do that this evening to see if there is a vent issue. When you say look through the filler to the inside of the fuel valve, do you mean look through the gas cap down to the fuel petcock on inside of tank? If so, I do not think it is visible from the gas cap....

Yes I will try to locate that and get it cleaned. I will look for a schematic on it.

That is actually a good question. When I was troubleshooting (or thought I was) I would start it and it would die and then I would try some starting fluid and it would do the same I would alternate from no fluid to using fluid to get it going depending on if it needed it. I am assuming you are leading me into the vent issue more after this reply, correct?

Depending on if spray starts it right up again.....could be coil

Yes it usually starts it back up again and then fades out after that fluid is burnt up it seems.
