I will be building another 70 and I've been throwing around different ideas with what to do with it. Since stock metal 70 tanks in clean shape are getting harder to find, I thought I might look for an alternate tank with a slightly different look. I started looking at the shapes of the Z50 tanks. The Z50 has gone through allot of changes over the years and there are a couple of shapes I keep going back to. I also found a couple of places on Ebay selling reproduction metal tanks for less than 100 bucks. The Z50 has a petcock unlike the 70. I will be stretching the frame 3 inches so I have some room to play with and the Z50 tank hooks in the front just like the 70 so all I have to do is relocate the stems on the frame for the tank grommets. I need to get my hands on a Z50 tank and do some fit checks. Check out the tanks on the Z50s I keep coming back to. I wonder if anybody has tried to fit a Z50 tank on a 70?

I'm partial to this shape.

Yea, I bought a tank off of ebay that looks like that for my future little red 70.

Have you done any fit checks to see what it looks like?

you need to contact oldeuce, he has already placed a z50 tank, I believe that is what he told me last summer, there is one off of a honda bike that is a almost direct fit I know for sure, he will know.

I was browsing Ebay last night and was scoping these out for the headlight and yes with a working speedo. I can get the gear drive and with a slight modification to the hub and spacer, I think I can get it to work. The Z50 speedo cable is a little over 21" long. The length is perfect. The light bucket has a neutral light and there is a hole for a key switch.

May I suggest a Honda APE100 tank? It fills the dead space of a stretch pretty well :-)

I was wondering what that tank was off of but they don't seem to be readily available.

An atc90 tank bolts on with no issues as well and would look great with a 3" stretch .

About 20 years ago I cut a late model 70 tank down the centre and welded in a metal strip around 2"wide. This was to give my first project X 70 more fuel capacity and to match the tank width to the seat width.
Now someone is making a wide tank from fiberglass.

Hey Louis, Were there and interference issues with the APE tank? Carb? The more I look at that tank, the more I like it.

Honestly there's lots of room under that tank as long as you have the intake angle right. The only issue I really had was the choke on the carb I used was very close. Don't get me wrong, it takes a little figuring out and it's a custom mount obviously but its prett ynice to work with.

Thanks Pete. I saw those. Right now I'm looking at allot of different things and getting ideas and putting together my buying plan. I won't be starting this project until I get an income coming back in and hopefully my interview will go good next week. I got a 110 motor from Matt so that's out of the way.

Louis, did you use the intake that came with the motor or did you buy a different one? My firefighter 70 I just finished the makeover on barely fit on the choke and that was with a stock tank. When I originally built it, I machined off about 1/8" on the base of the intake.

Louis, can you tell me how large of a stretch to fit these, and how much do you shim upward to fit the carb under it?

Thank you

3" stretch, the front mounting posts will need re-positioned about an inch or so. As far as the rear I cant be a big help there because I lowered the mount, only to decide I didn't like it. I couldn't go back because I had already welded things in place so I made a new spacer to fit under the rear of the tank.

It's really a matter of trial and error unfortunately.

Neat thread, that I somehow missed when it was new. I like the look of that APE100 tank!

Also, just thought I'd throw this out there, I have an SL70 tank I will never use. If anyone wants it, PM me.

Louis is right to about the choke almost contacting the petcock to. I'm using a mikuni 22mm and the choke does come in slight contact with the petcock. But lots of room under the ape tank. It's like a wind tunnel to cool off my engine tho!! Lol
