Interesting, unfortunately while he may have the cool rear rack, the horn isn't there, the factory heel guards? The front fender flap bracket... The front header heat shield... I do love a good decal kit. He just falls short of the real. Truth be told while the brakes are not as good on an 85- the rear swingarm is much more substantially built on an 85 vs 86/87 and I'm guessing a true 88 would at least be the same as 87. There are pluses to the 85.

I wasn't aware the 88 BR had heel guards, never seen them before? An 88 repro is pretty much impossible to get 100%, the seat and bar pad are the main stumbling blocks.

Hahahaha
They must not of been factory fit on the first 100 off the line!! Something tells me I was never gonna see those 70 tyres anyway! You're slowing down in you're old age ;)

Are the heel guards a Hondaline accessory for the 88 Big Red or were they standard equipment?

I would've thought they were a standard! But I guess they must've been an optional item since they are only seen in schematics... Really a shame thought they'd have been popular.

My 88 does not have heel guards fitted and it is pretty much an untouched original, it is VIN # 51 so maybe they were not factory fit early in the production run. I have never seen any sales literature with the heel guards fitted.

I believe they are pictured on the one in the article here on 3ww. I think it also has the fender flare accessory too. That's the only one I've seen those on.

I personally think the 85 decals and trikes look the best. For the es and the sx.

So this guy says he put the later model brake drum on this 85. I would like to do the same if this is possible without changing the swingarm. I've done everything to my breaks and they suck. Can I bolt on a 86 backing plate and drum?

You must replace the entire rear end. Swingarm, axle, hubs, panel, drum... The whole thing. On further note... It maybe possible to keep the swing and replace all the other components I know the axle is different, hubs, and brake assembly. I haven't actually done it or tried, but from what I've read, these things are true.
