View Full Version : My new vintage dirtbike

So I haven't been on craigslist in months and I got to work an hour early by accident so I was killing time and saw this only 30 minutes away. Well right after work I shoved it in the back of my minivan and brought it home.

I believe it's an 83 rm125. The guy didn't really know what he had and was at work so his wife was there and I didn't even try to beat them down on the price. Only complain is the suspensions a little soft from being old, so I will get them rebuilt. But when it started first kick from dead cold, I was sold.

I'm not sure if I wanna keep it, sell it for a profit, or trade it for another trike. Most likely trade it down the line when I polish it up a bit. But if I can't get something along the lines of a 250sx, 200x, 250es, stuff like that then I'll probably keep it. But it's really fun, I'm just a 4 stroke kinda guy.

Nice bike, looks like it never saw a race track. I'm not a 125 guy (I'm too heavy and I like torque), but that bike reminds me of the 1982 RM250, one of my all time favorites. Those were the days....

My only complaints about the bike itself is it has little bottom end, and it vibrates when your screaming in the high gears. I'm use to my nice Yamaha with its counterbalance stuff. It's fun, I got it for hill climbing and playing around. My neighbors have a bunch of 2 stroke dirtbikes and it's fun to go with them and screw around.

Like I said I'm a 4 stroke guy, I'm waiting to fill my 2-stroke void with a trike.
Debating on seeing what offers I can get. But I just got it, I'll enjoy it for a bit.

Nothing wrong with the old ones despite what the racer crowd thinks. I have a 1981 cr250 and a 1982 xr500 sitting in the garage waiting for me to get enough parts rounded up so I can start on the rebuilds. I also know where there was a 1986 rm250 sitting at one time too. I thought about buying it but have too many waiting on work now. That's a good looking bike. Enjoy.

I have a 1981 cr250

That year od Honda brings back memories. I was at the season opener in Whitemouth Manitoba and it was raining and muddy. Almost every Honda 125 & 250 was DNF. Turned out water cooling requires that air pass through the radiators to cool (Whoda thunk it?). That and it seems Honda's case supplier mixed up the halves and that the cylinder mounting surfaces didn't match, so combined with the heat they leaked and well, it was a very bad day to be a Honda guy.

Way cool that you've got one in use, first 250 L/C out there.

bro...sweet score!!! be proud of the older stuff...it opened doorways for what we have now which i think gives appreciation to the vintage...aka...what you have now. cool stuff, bro!!

That's a great looking old RM...You can never find them from that era let alone in as decent shape as that one is...I would fix whatever needed it and ride the hell out of it.

I'm a Euro guy but that is a nice score for a post vintage racer. ever figure out the year? I'm thinking in 83 RM's had, at least, front discs (which makes them AHRMA illegal (ules its a few Huskys or a Rokok or something). Wish wife would let me get a hold of stuff like that when I see them. Have an 82 and 99 Husky and she says that's enough.

It's an 83. I didn't run the vin or anything but just judging by a few things that's what I still believe. This gen was made from 81-83. Then they changed over to the shrouds on the tank, etc etc.
81/82 had the black seat cover, 83 had the blue like this one. All years had drums but are actually very good, no problem doing a stoppie or locking up that rear wheel and sliding it.

I still wanna find a nice bike from the 70's, I seen a couple real nice ones for around $600 but I'm saving for a truck and the woman would kill me. But that Elsinore I seen (I think that's how you spell it?) has really got me thinking.

Parts are near impossible to find for it, let alone all that awesome DG stuff. A blast from the past, I love old school goodies on a bike.

The rear suspension design the "full floater" from 1981-1986 is considered by many suspension specialists as the best design of all time in fact the guy who designed it sued Suzuki, it was held up in court for years and he won some big money! Suzuki was forced to change the design in 1987 to the pitiful cam linkage set up.

Bob Hannah was not happy and tried to change over to the Boyesen anti chain torque suspension linkage Elyin Boyesen designed. Suzuki said NO, but he did ride it at the US GP- Unadilla, NY. and loved it.
