250r fork seal replacement

My forks leak oil so I need some help putting new fork seals in my 85 250r. Some steps or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

After the forks are removed and drained of oil, undo the 6mm allen on the bottom. Remove the dust seal. Thats the 1st seal on top. Theres a ring clip under the dust seal. remove it . Get your springs out from the top and with one hand ,hold the lower tube and the other hand hold the upper tube. Use these like a slide hammer and drive the oil seal out. Just slide the 2 parts apart and it will drive the oil seal out. It might take a few blows to do the trick.

Get a flashlight and look into the lower housing and see all the sedement. i use paint thinner to rinse it out. Get it all out.

Installation...After you have the tubes back in , slide the oil seal in place make sure they are the same direction as in the removal. top to bottom compairson. DONT beat on the new seal. I use the old seal as a driver. I slide the old seal over the new seal and it tales the blows. DONT KNICK THE DOWN TUBES WHILE DRIVING THE SEALS IN.

After the seal is in the bottom flush, pick the old seal out and install the ring clip and make sure it snaps into its grove and then install the dust seal.

Oil... factory calls for 400cc of oil. I run 380cc. You can use ATF if your on a budget. 10wt works for me. Good luck


PS if the allen on the bottom is not tightening up, make sure your springs are installed. This will keep the damping rod from spinning inside. Also keep track of the spring stack. Remove all parts and put them in the order they came out. This will help with assembly.

So how many sets of seals do you need for this?

Definitely 1 set (2 seals total, 1 for each fork leg) of oil seals.
Possibly 1 set (2 seals total, 1 for each fork leg) of dust wiper seals. The wiper seals don't always need to be changed, if you're rebuilding your forks frequently, but since you've never rebuilt yours, I would go with new wipers as well. While the forks are apart, inspect the bushings too. If they are worn excessively, I would replace those at the same time.
