so my 87 BR 250 pops a 20amp fuse everytime i turn the key to the on position. iv stripped all the wiring and started testing wires. i first jumped the fuse with tin foil on the glass amp and jumped the 20 amp fuse with a wire to make a full circuit, i also cut all the wires off my hot wire (green) and hooked one at a time until i got the end where the hot wire (green) is suppose to ground. each time i attached a wire i turned the key on and waited for sparks and smoke. found the smoke at the hot wire (green) stator connection. so i unhooked all the wires past it and i removed the jumper wire and hooked up a resettable fuse and turned the key on. still popped the fuse so i disconnected the stator wire (green) and the fuse didnt blow. so i took off the side cover and re connected the stator hot wire. fuse didnt blow, test light shows power to the stator. all other wires coming out of the stator are in good shape also. so i put the cover back on with out bolting it and popped the fuse when i turned the key on. took the cover off again and rested it about a 1/16 of an inch from the stator going into the magneto and no fuse pop. push the cover on a tad more so the stator is in the magneto a quarter of an inch and the fuse pops.

info for the situation. the stator and magneto were swapped from a spare running motor, came out of a 250sx, all wires were hooked up and everything was plugged in for first try with new used stator and magneto and no fuses popped and the BR kicked over and started, ran and idled fine. started to solder one wire at a time making sure the key was turned on and BR would turn over by push start, got to the stator wire to solder (green) and popped fuse. also i changed the CDI box with a newer one that came off a running BR 250 and a regulator that came off a running BR 250.

what is causing my fuse to blow? why is it that everytime i get the stator into the magneto something grounds and pops the fuse.

its not the stator or magneto, when the side cover was off i turned the key ignition on and no fuse blew. i touched the side cover to metal and the fuse popped. which means the side cover is grounding out. even with a gasket in place wouldnt the bolts holding the cover on ground out the side cover and blow the fuse? any takers?

Without looking at a BR wiring diagram...

I thought green = ground on Hondas so sending power straight to a green wire should make sparks & smoke.

looking at the diagram black is a hot wire once it leaves the key switch. i have a feeling someone hot wired the wrong black wire after the fuse into the green wire juicing everything.
