Hey guys,
I have an 88 YZ250 that has been giving me some trouble. Soon after I bought it the stator coil went out of it which led to much worse problems (that's another story...). After a complete top end rebuild and a stator from eBay it has lost another stator coil in less than two hours of ride time. Is there something in particular I should look for to make sure this doesn't happen again when I get another coil for it? There are no lights on it or aftermatket ignition components that I am aware of.

Try PM'ing DOHC, he's good with electronics. I'd start looking at ground wires before changing anything else.

Do you happen to have a cached diagram for the yz,,, that'll help me see any inherent wiring needs.
How long did it take to burn the old one? What are your readings on the coils now? What's the 'other story' of damage after the first one went?

The old one went out after a couple hours of riding shortly after i bought it. The guy said he had been riding it for quite a while and it never gave him any problems (im really starting to doubt that). the reading on the large coil is completely open and the small coil is rather low, i cant remember what i had on that one exactly i can check it later and post the reading. Im just wondering if theres a chance that the ignition coil is bad or if there's another component in the system that i should check before just getting another coil. I do plan to check all the grounds like El Camexican suggested. i dont want to miss anything this time.
The other story...
We did not know it was the coil that went out of it the first time. We were assuming it was a carb issue and tried pull starting it to get some air flow through it. The bike fired up since the coil would generate power but only at high RPMs so it did run for a couple seconds which just so happens to be enough to cold seize a wiesco piston. The shop that did the bore work still has the piston sitting on their counter. I guess some things need to be learned the hard way.

The sentence I have highlighted is the reason I need a diagram... If you don't post one up soon I'll see if I can find one soon and go from there.

I found a diagram that i believe is correct. Its from a different year bike but the components are still the same.
