Not gonna lie camexican, i thought of going that direction before the Dr. Dick act. And Robert, i dont have any plans to sell but i always say that everything is for sale. The price is just so high that no one will pay it.

So here's the story of the Cagiva 500. I'm a terrible story teller so you'll have to bear with me. The guy i bought it from lives down the street from my parents so i've known him all my life. He's considerably older than me, i'd say hes in his early fifties maybe? Since i was young i always heard about this dirt bike converted 3 wheeler that he had, something European and big. In my late teens (i''m 30 now) i talked to him about it and figured out what it was. This was before i was on this site and really understood what it was, but i still wanted it. As the years went on i've always tried to get him to sell it to me but he always said he wanted to ride it once again before he sold it, which just never happened. I bugged him a lot one year and think i annoyed him so i quit asking him about it for a couple years. Fast forward to this spring. My wife and i were at the bar down the road eating seafood and drinking beers. He came in and we started talking about some work he was doing for me on my barn. I was pretty dickered at the time so i started pestering him about the Cagiva again. He said he was thinking about it and that someone had actually called him looking for it earlier in the spring. They had tracked it down from the person he bought it from. (Was this anyone here) This was the first time i really got nervous about it. Everyone in town knew about this bike but no one is into 3 wheelers as much as me so i didn't feel like i had much to worry about. So being drunk and paranoid i made him a pretty good offer for it right on the spot and told him i would get it going for next year and he could race it if he wanted. He said he was thinking a different number $500 more than my offer. I said i could do that, we finished our conversation and i went home thinking i had it sealed up. But, i talked with him a week or so later and it was like we never talked about the deal before. I just kinda left it because i didn't want to annoy him again. We talked some more throughout the summer about my barn but nothing ever happened with the wheeler. Then Monday he called right when i pulled into Ben's driveway to work on my kx60 project. He started talking about the barn so i figured that's why he was calling but then he said that he had decided to sell it. i was shocked, i honestly never thought he would sell it. We set up a time to get it the next evening and then i went in and bragged to Ben. I barely slept that night and Tuesday just dragged on. I never knew where it was till we met up to get it. It was in a half fallen down dairy barn that i literally drove by 200 times a summer. i couldn't believe it. It took us about an hour to move old doors, pieces of a piano, and miscellaneous building materials before we could roll it out. We had to tip it up on its side to roll it through a man door. It was like one of those stories you read about happening to someone that you think,"That never happens in real life." I still cant really believe it.

After we got it out I asked him how he got it. This is all kind of fuzzy so i may be missing a couple details, i'll be seeing him soon to get the rest of the parts so i'll try to make sure i got the story right. He was really into dirt bike racing in the 80's and liked big bores so he found this one in PA i believe. The guy selling it was starting a shop and was selling husky's, atk, oddball stuff. He bought this as a dirt bike and it came with the conversion kit. I'm assuming the kit was used because it has some stickers on it and he never really used it once he converted it. So he trail rode the bike and raced enduros. Then he got into a car accident in 94 and really couldn't do much so the kit on. They had to shorten the subframe a little to make it fit and put a master cylinder on for the rear brakes because the dirt bike had a drum on the rear. He got it going and rode it once, but the shock was blown so he took it out to have it rebuilt. That was 94-95 ish and he never touched it again, except to move it to the dairy barn.

That's the story of it. Now comes the hard part of figuring out what exactly it is. I PMed Andy and sent him a link to the thread, hopefully he can come in here and shed some light on it. I'm 99% sure its a 200 kit that they put on the 500. It definitely is using 200 forks because the 500 forks are still in the dirt bike triples and are bigger diameter. Does anyone know for sure that they made kits for the 500s? It has 250R gold wheels on the back and a durablue axle. That's about all i know about it but i'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it soon. Thanks for listening to my story, hope it was entertaining

Anyways. It is a tricky dick conversion, ive looked at a ton of photos and the tripples, swinger, seat, fenders, and axle match up. The real question is if this is one of 2 500's or 1 of 67 200 conversion on a 500. Either way im a happy man. Hope to meet you at TF 15

Awesome find! It definitely spent enough time in the barn. You just never know what someone has lying around. I think you're right though in it being a 200 kit. It looks as though someone took a 200 subframe and chopped the front of a 500 dirt bike subframe and welded it together. The actual 500 subframe would be different and more one solid piece. The kit parts are from an early 200 and the 500's would be some of the last Cagiva's made. So the subframe, swingarm and carrier would be different based on minor changes from the early to later Cagiva's. The triple clamps would have been made for the 500 forks also. However, a 200 swingarm and triples will bolt up. Talked to my dad this morning about it and he doesn't remember ever making just a 500 kit for someone. Just the two that we bought from Cagiva. He actually built the 500 because a guy in IL had a 200(which I have now) and using it in pulls and wanted a 500. But if you want to send me the 17 digit serial number, I'd be happy to check it out.

With that being said, get that thing running! The nice thing is it's MUCH easier to get motor parts for the '85 WMX 500 than the '84 WMX 250 (190cc). I somehow never got to ride the 500. I always "test rode" everything that was made. Even the one Husky and those few Kaw 60's. So help me complete my list. :)

Thanks Andy for the info. The Vin is ZCGCBXHX4FVOOOO49 and the number 22 is stamped on the bottom of the lower triple. It doesnt look like this is going to be a tough one to get running, should just be a matter of getting together

TrickyDickII
10-23-2014, 04:51 PM
Well, it doesn't match the two VINs I have. The TD's employee that made the triple clamps would stamp the clamps to keep them as matching pairs. I don't know if the number correlates to the build number. I still keep in contact with him and will check on this. I do believe it is close though. Ironically, the 200 that the IL guy used in pulls is stamped with #23 and is an early 200 with the identical kit as yours.

I have to say, I have known of this bike for a while and was probably as excited to see this get into 86t3's hands as he was/is. Even if it's not 1of2 it's still one of less than 40. It kind of gets put into perspective when you consider the production numbers of the big companies.

Some updates on the Cagiva, I've started working on it with hopes of having it running for trikefest. With the help of Craig, Fabio, Raffa, and just Ben, I was able to buy a parts wmx500 up in New Hampshire. I PayPal ed craig the money and he bought it, Fabio brought it down to Raffa for icefest where it stayed for a couple months before ben brought it home. I'm still looking for time to get it from ben but have been very busy with work. I was very fortunate to get the parts bike because the pipe on it has pinholes in the bottom of the expansion chamber where it had a roost blocker on it that collected moisture and held in dirt. The intake boot it dry rotted and the kicker is sloppy as well. I got started on a leak down test but the I take boot is holding me up. I got the shock back from the owner and had the local shop look at it. They gave it a charge and a clean bill of health, so I put it back on tonight. One thing I'm having trouble with is the real brake line. It have very odd fittings and I haven't been able to find anyone locally to make one. I'm hoping some of the other cagiva owners could help me out. I have a few leads to check out in the meantime. Expect updates the end of next week

So life happened and I didnt have as much time to work on the cagiva as I had hoped. I brought it to trikefest, Unadilla, and Ashtabula and worked on it a little at each event. Finally, Saturday night at Ashtabula with the help of a little liquid persuasion and peer pressure I changed the crank case oil, installed the air filter, put some gas in and started kicking. After about 10 kicks it fired up. After we got done high fiving I reached down and turned the choke off, that's when the problem happened. The rpm started to climb steadily to an uncomfortable level, I hit the kill switch and nothing happened. Simultaneously, Jake "The Savior" Keister pulled the plug boot (getting a nice shock from the motoplat) and I gave it full throttle and it cut out. Because we did that at the same time I didn't know what killed it so I didn't know what direction to look. The next day I told Jason Hall the story and he said it was probably a clogged slow jet. Fast forward to tonight. I pulled the plug and found that the kill switch wasn't working. It had some corrosion that caused it to not ground. I got that fixed then looked at the carb. Sure enough, it had a plugged jet. I had cleaned the carb before but didn't see this jet under a cover for the main. For some reason this carb has three jets in it, idk how they work but now they're all clean. I put it all back together and now I have a running cagiva 500 trike. The idle is still a little high but I didn't have time to look into it, hopefully I'll get some video this week and maybe even take it for a little ride.

Awesome Joe, I'm glad to have a little part in this puzzle. I have a question though. What ratio are you running? (Tears/oil) Can't wait to see it run.

I've found that 300 honda owner tears/ounce of oil seems to run pretty good.

After a couple months of procrastination and a new throttle cable, I finally got the old girl ready to ride. I have a very strong front brake, but the rears are non functional so i took it easy...not easy enough to keep from roosting the wife, but kinda easy. Enjoy.

Wow!, very cool, Thank you!

It's a Cagiva and I love it, being a 500 just adds to it!
