Trying to put together the front end together for a suspended 1981 185s. The original front setup is gone and was replaced by a narrower hub, that appears to be off an X or R model, and has a few (prolly about 20) washers acting as spacers and no provisions for front brake. I'm trying to replace it with a stock setup, luckily I have the actual main axle that came with the aftermarket front end, I just need something the correct width.
I kept reading about interchangeability about 185 and 200 parts but didn't fully do my research, so I nabbed a complete front assembly from '82 200 as I wanted the four lug pattern. But comparing it to the width I have between forks it appears that the '82 200 is approximately an inch too wide. At this point, I'm looking back and see that the 185s came with a 22x11-8 tire and the 200 came with a 25x12-9 tire. So is this the reason the front end is an inch wide? Can anyone verify the width of a 185s from outside of spacer to outside of spacer, my forks are approximately 13 1/4" apart on the inside faces, and the 200 frontend I have is approximately 14 1/4" from outside of spacer to outside of spacer.
Next question, if that is the reason and I need the narrower 185s unit, is it possible or worth narrowing the one I have. I probably wouldn't be out too much money to throw this one back up on ebay, and get the correct width unit. But it appears I just need to shorten the hub and internal spacer an inch. Not sure if there is an internal stop for the bearings that may also play a part in not being able to shorten very easily.
Also is the 4 bolt pattern different on 1982 185s vs 200 front hubs? I thought they shared the 4x130 bolt pattern, but the supposed 200 hub measures 4x150.
